Background: Inflammation is an important mechanism in atherosclerosis and plaque formation. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a common inflammatory biomarker associated with the risk of coronary heart disease. We investigated the relationship of CRP with findings from myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). Methods: In this retrospective study, 102 consecutive patients (mean age 71 years, 68% males) who underwent MPI (for diagnostic reasons or quantification of myocardial ischemia) and CRP determination (upper limit: 6 mg/L) within 1 month from MPI were included. The patients had no infection or recent acute coronary syndrome. Results: The median CRP level was 4 mg/L (2, 10) among the study population. Patients with raised CRP had higher summed stress score (SSS) (p = 0.006) and summed rest score (SRS) (p = 0.001) and higher risk for SSS > 3 (OR 9.25, 95% CI 2.03–42.13, p = 0.001) compared to those with low CRP. The association of SSS and SRS with CRP levels was more evident in patients over 70 years (p = 0.027 and p = 0.005, respectively). No significant difference in summed difference score was shown. The two groups had no difference in other risk factors (p > 0.05 for all comparisons). Conclusion: a high level of CRP was associated with the presence and extent of stress-induced myocardial ischemia in MPI.
This study examines the impact of Fed monetary policy shocks on financial stress, inflation, and output growth, considering several advanced and emerging economies. To that end, it uses shadow rates as a proxy measure of unconventional monetary policy actions and a financial stress index as an indicator of financial instability. We apply a global vector autoregressive model and present the outcome of impulse response functions and forecasts of macroeconomic and financial stress variables. Our results show that US output and inflation are positively affected in response to a domestic negative monetary policy shock, whereas financial stress is unresponsive to the same shock. This policy also has international effects, as we find significant spillovers with the US interest rate shock impacting inflation abroad. The findings of this study are useful to policymakers and investors.
The aim of this research is the ecological evaluation of the trees of a riparian peri-urban park, with measurement, inventory and processing of qualitative and quantitative variables of trees (Dendometry) in the riparian forest of the river Karpenissiotis in Central Greece. Each tree is recorded in relation to its species (structural elements) including the diameter at breast height (DBH), the height (H), the ruggedness coefficient (H/D), the height of the crown (Hk), the length of the crown (Lk), the diameter of the crown (Dk), the order of the crown, the order of vitality, the tendency of evolution, the position of the trunk, the shape of the crown, the problems in the space of the roots, the crown, pruning, insect infestations, fungi, and runoff. From the statistical analysis and processing of the measurements, assessment was made of the condition of their health and stability; and necessary measures are proposed in order to significantly improve the ecological conditions of a riparian forest. Thus, the main problems presented by the forest species of trees concerned mainly the sloping, crooked and serpentine trunks, asymmetrical crown shape, insect and fungal infestations. The riparian peri-urban plane forest studied is dominated by trees, which are classified as remaining, normally growing with long asymmetrical crowns with a moderate health status and moderate stability. For the sustainable management and sustainable development of the riparian forest, measures are proposed which are necessary for the forest protection of the trees including their health and safe growth.
In the present research communication, we report on identification and quantification of four main lactic acid bacteria (LAB) genera (Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus and Leuconostoc), most common in Greek cheeses, by a novel culture-independent method. More specifically, new primers were designed to be used in both multiplex PCR for simultaneous identification and in real-time PCR for quantification of the LAB. The method was validated by applying it in parallel to culture-dependent method in a variety of cheeses from different Greek geographical locations, of different animal milk origins and of different production methods. While the standard plate culture method showed absence of Leuconostoc sp. in all cheeses, the culture-independent methods detected all four LAB genera studied. Furthermore, the relative presence of the four genera detected by the culture-independent method showed a pattern present in almost all cheese samples tested, indicating Lactococcus genus as the dominant one.
At the beginning of the present century, the literature on financial integration focused on the benefits of increased integration. In particular, the literature emphasized that a well-integrated financial system allows economic agents to engage in risk sharing while enhancing the smooth transmission of monetary policy. However, the international financial crisis of 2007-08 and the euro area sovereign debt crisis of 2009-15, brought to the fore the flip side of increased financial integration – namely, that higher financial integration among national jurisdictions creates the potential for destabilizing cross-country spillovers of capital flows. The papers in this Special Issue address financial system vulnerabilities in the aftermath of the 2007-08 financial crisis and the 2009-15 euro area crisis. In particular, the papers assess (1) vulnerabilities arising from such factors as the liberalization of financial systems, cross-country contagion, and climate change, and (2) policy responses, including macroprudential supervision and quantitative easing, to financial instabilities.
The papers in this Special Issue take stock of the functioning of the euro area during its crisis, which encompassed mainly the years 2009-15. They address several questions. For example, what surprises did the euro crisis provide about our knowledge about monetary unions? Why were the interconnections between banking systems and fiscal positions so strong during the euro area crisis? In so doing, they contribute to a deeper understanding of the nature of Europe's monetary union, the under-pinnings of its crisis, and the changes that need to be made to the monetary union so that crises can be prevented in the future.
Can we leverage high-resolution information without the unsustainable quadratic complexity to input scale? We propose Traversal Network (TNet), a novel multi-scale hard-attention architecture, which traverses image scale-space in a top-down fashion, visiting only the most informative image regions along the way. TNet offers an adjustable trade-off between accuracy and complexity, by changing the number of attended image locations. We compare our model against hard-attention baselines on ImageNet, achieving higher accuracy with less resources (FLOPs, processing time and memory). We further test our model on fMoW dataset, where we process satellite images of size up to $896 \times 896$ px, getting up to $2.5$x faster processing compared to baselines operating on the same resolution, while achieving higher accuracy as well. TNet is modular, meaning that most classification models could be adopted as its backbone for feature extraction, making the reported performance gains orthogonal to benefits offered by existing optimized deep models. Finally, hard-attention guarantees a degree of interpretability to our model's predictions, without any extra cost beyond inference. In this paper, we investigate transmission techniques for a fundamental cooperative cognitive radio network, i.e., a cognitive radio system where a Secondary user may act as relay for messages sent by the Primary user, hence offering performance improvement of Primary user transmissions, while at the same time obtaining more transmission opportunities for its own transmissions. Specifically, we examine the possibility of improving the overall system performance by employing network coding techniques. The objective is to achieve this while affecting Primary user transmissions only positively, namely: 1) avoid network coding operations at the Primary transmitter, hence avoiding increase of its storage requirements and keeping its complexity low, 2) keep the order of packets received by the Primary receiver the same as in the non cooperative case and 3) induce packet service times that are stochastically smaller than the packet service times induced in the non-cooperative case. A network coding algorithm is investigated in terms of achieved throughput region and it is shown to enlarge Secondary user throughput as compared to the case where the Secondary transmitter acts as a simple relay, while leaving the Primary user stability region unaffected. A notable feature of this algorithm is that it operates without knowledge of channel and packet arrival rate statistics. We further present a second network coding algorithm which increases the throughput region of the system under certain conditions on system parameters; however, the latter algorithm requires knowledge of channel and packet arrival rate statistics.
In this research communication we describe an innovative protocol that combines three pairs of primers, two from the literature and one designed in our laboratory, for application in triplex-PCR on somatic cell DNA to enable identification of the species origin (cow, sheep, goat) of cheeses and yogurts with a detection limit of 0.1%. Mislabeling was detected in 15 out of 40 cheeses and in 18 out of 40 yogurts tested. The suggested procedure is a quick and reliable tool for identifying the animal origin of cheeses and yogurts and it can be used to certify product reliability on the domestic and international market. Additionally, in combination with a serological test it can offer a reliable tool for detecting the presence of cow's whey.
A radioisotope therapeutic unit (RTU) for the treatment of patients with radiopharmaceuticals was designed and set in operation by the Ioannina University Hospital Medical Physics and Nuclear Medicine Departments. A number of parameters and procedures have been taken into account during the design stage to combine high quality medical services with minimum unjustified radiation exposures. Two pre-existing wards were modified to therapy / isolation wards by the addition of structural shielding made of concrete or/and iron and lead plates. Similar modifications were carried out in some of the remaining rooms of the RTU, such as the corresponding hot-lab and the storage-to-decay rooms. A network of GM detectors was installed for continuous monitoring of radiation levels at various locations. Among the first one hundred patients treated at the Unit, 80 had differentiated cancer and 14 had hyperthyroidism and were treated with 131 I of activity ranging between 0.74 and 7.4 GBq. The maximum H*(10) rate at 1.0 m distance from the patient’s body was one of the criteria for patient release and was set on patient-specific terms. The adequacy of the RTU design and the employed operational policies were verified in practice. In conclusion, the RTU meets successfully the predicted needs.
This paper employs a panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) model to investigate the relationship among financial stress, inflation and growth in 19 advanced economies over the 1999–2016 period. To measure financial stress, we construct a financial stress index (FSI) that provides a signal of financial stress. We apply the PVAR approach along with impulse response functions (IRFs), variance decomposition, and Granger causality tests to FSI data on monetary stability, economic growth, housing markets and government policies. The analysis shows negative responses of the macroeconomic variables to financial stress shocks.
In this work, we examine cognitive radio networks, where secondary users may act as relays for messages sent by the primary user, hence offering performance improvement of primary transmissions, while at the same time obtaining more transmission opportunities for their own data. In particular, assuming the broadcast packet erasure model with feedback, we investigate the capacity of the fundamental cooperative cognitive radio network which consists of one primary and one secondary transmitter-receiver pairs. The primary transmitter is the owner of the channel and as such, we intend to keep its operations simple and to avoid increasing its storage requirements. Specifically, the primary transmitter does not receive data sent by the secondary transmitter and does not perform any coding operations. On the other hand, the secondary transmitter can overhear primary transmissions and is allowed to perform any coding operations. We develop an outer bound to the capacity of the fundamental cooperative cognitive radio network under consideration. Then, we propose a coding-scheduling algorithm suitable for this type of networks, which involves only XOR network coding operations. The complexity of the scheduling decisions of the proposed algorithm depends on the channel statistical parameters and three cases, depending on the relations between channel erasure probabilities, are distinguished. For the first two cases the rate region of the proposed algorithm coincides with the developed capacity outer bound, hence the algorithm is capacity achieving. For the third case, the rate region of the proposed algorithm is not identical to the outer bound; however, numerical results show that it is fairly close to the derived outer bound for a wide range of the statistical parameters of the system.
This study focuses on the financial linkages within the Eurozone as well as on the exposure of Eurozone countries to internal and external shocks. We have found evidence of strong financial inter-dependence among the Eurozone countries, but there is evidence of stronger interdependence among the countries of the same cluster. That is, the major spillover transmitter for South countries is Italy, while North countries are mostly affected by the Netherlands. No matter the type of the shock (i.e. internal or external), the results imply that shocks are not symmetrically distributed within the Eurozone. South countries receive more stress from internal shocks (i.e. debt crisis), while North countries are more exposed to external shocks, such as a potential financial shock in US. The evidence of asymmetric transmission of financial shocks across the Eurozone countries reveals a complex and fragile monetary policy framework.
