This paper reports the results of an experiment designed to study how subjects’ decision making may be affected by the timing of participation payments (or show-up fees). The experiment follows Davis et al. (J. Econ. 30:69–95, 2004 ) where subjects were asked to make a sequential purchase decision and were given the opportunity to purchase information about the value of a good prior to a decision to purchase the good itself. There, subjects purchased information less often than expected which was interpreted as risk-seeking behavior. Here, we test a payment hypothesis by varying the timing of the participation payment. Payment of a show-up fee before the decision-making stages of the experiment increases information purchase, which we interpret as an increase in risk-averse behavior.
The tâtonnement process is inherently a price taking process. An auctioneer calls out a price and traders respond with a quantity signal. This tâtonnement (groping) process contrasts with a double auction (continuous bid-ask) process that utilizes price signals. Do traders in this institution fully reveal quantity or do they underreveal affecting price, quantity, and efficiency? In the experiments reported here, traders playing against a fully revealing automaton systematically attempt to manipulate price by underrevealing quantity bid or offered.
Price discrimination, the practice of charging different prices to different customers for the same product, is analyzed for 89 of the "best" academic journals in the disciplines of chemistry, physics, psychology, economics, sociology, and business. These journals were selected by reference to rankings appearing in each discipline's literature or citation rank in the "Science Citation Index." Individual and institutional subscription prices were analyzed for two years (1974, 1984). The incidence of price discrimination rose between the two years, and the increase in mean institutional (library) subscription price exceeded the increase in mean individual subscription price. Additionally, the degree of price discrimination (the markup) differed by discipline and kind of publisher. Chemistry and physics journals exhibited the greatest mean markup of institutional price over individual price, while economics and business had the lowest.
This article reports the results of experiments analyzing the Walrasian tâtonnement mechanism. The tâtonnement mechanism has the following characteristics: there is only one price at any time; there is an information mechanism notifying all traders of the price; there is a mechanism for determining quantities offered for sale and purchase at the price; and transactions at nonequilibrating prices are forbidden. In addition, the Walrasian pricing rule is utilized by the auctioneer: the change in price has the same sign as excess demand. The treatment variable used in the experimental design is the degree of segregation of buyers and sellers. Complete segregation means sellers cannot discover the number of buyers and buyers cannot discover the number of sellers at an announced price. The results show that the auction mechanism is stable: it exhibits strong convergence properties and efficiency levels averaging better than 97%. Segregation of the buyers from the sellers leads to a significant difference in underrevelation of demand relative to supply.
This paper reports the results of a block of experiments designed to analyze the effects of information on market performance in experimental competitive markets. Variations in institutional structure are utilized to affect the kind and amount of information subjects could gather about prices and supply and demand conditions. More information is associated with more rapid convergence, smaller variances, and closer convergence while efficiency and mean transactions prices are unaffected.

Bovine liver arginase (EC 3.5.3.1) was encapsulated within nylon membrane microcapsules by the process of interfacial polymerization. The effect of microencapsulation on the properties of arginase was investigated. The Km, pH optimum and temperature stability at 37°C of arginase, were not significantly altered. The microencapsulated enzyme was much less stable at temperatures between 50 and 70°C than the free enzyme. Native arginase was inactivated by exposure to proteolytic enzymes, whereas microencapsulated arginase was much more resistant to proteolysis. A preliminary investigation of the effectiveness of the microencapsulated enzyme against the L1210 murine leukaemia in vivo has been made.
