The essential oil from the fruits of Lomatium, nevadense var. parishii showed beta-phellandrene/limonene, (Z)-beta-ocimene, (E)-beta-ocimene,gamma-terpenene, beta-caryophyllene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, and (E)-sesquilavandulol to constitute more than 3% each of the oil. With the addition of (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenol and palmitic acid, the stem and leaf oil had similar composition. A new sesquiterpene alcohol, trans-dauc-8-en-11-ol along with naturally occurring 2',3',3'-trimethyl-2',3'-dihydroangelicin were isolated. (Z)-Falcarinol made up 48.5% of the root oil.
The fruit essential oil of Lomatium foeniculaceum, ssp. fimbriatum collected from the Inyo National Forest in California contained myrcene (24.5%), beta-phellandrene/limonene (12.9%), germacrene D (13.9%), (E)-beta-ocimene (10.4%), and(Z)-ligustilide (9.8%) as the major components. Germacrene D and(Z)-ligustilide also constituted the major components of the stem and leaf oil. (Z)-Falcarinol (38.1%) was the major component of the root essential oil.
The composition of the essential oils of Lomatium dasycarpum ssp. dasycarpum, Lomatium lucidum, Lomatium macrocarpum var. macrocarpum and Lomatium utriculatum is described. Identification of components was determined from their GC, GC/MS data and many were confirmed by coinjections with authentic samples. Several components were isolated by liquid and gas chromatographic techniques and their structures confirmed from their 1H and 13C NMR spectral data. 2-Methyl and 3-methylbutanoates were the major components of L. dasycarpum fruits as well as stems and leaves oils. β-Phellandrene/limonene, decanal, dodecanal, bornyl acetate, germacrene D, α-humulene and bicyclogermacrene were the major components of the corresponding L. lucidum oils. α-Pinene and β-pinene were the major components of the fruit oil of L. macrocarpum. Its stem and leaf oil was rich in peucenin 7-methyl ether, β-caryophyllene, (Z)-3-hexenol, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and (E)-2-hexenal. Sabinene, (Z)-ligustilide, terpinen-4-ol, β-phellandrene/limonene, β-caryophyllene, myrcene, α-pinene and β-pinene were the major compounds in L. utriculatum fruit oil, while its stem and leaf oil was rich in (Z)-ligustilide, palmitic acid, terpinen-4-ol, linoleic acid and germacrene D. (Z)-Falcarinol was a major component of all the four root oils.
Oils produced from the fruits, steins and leaves and roots of Lontatium, rigidum, were subjected to analysis by GC, GC/MS and other spectroscopic techniques. The oils of fruits as well as the stems and leaves of L.rigidum, were found to contain beta-phellandrene/limonene (9.1-25.7%), delta-cadinene (7.5-12.9%), alpha-cadmol (16.4-18.6%), epi-alpha-cadinol and epi-alpha-muurolol (8.2-9.0%) as major components. The root oils were found to be rich in (Z)-falcarinol (10.8-14.9%), 2-epi-beta-funebrene (48.2%), a new funebrene epimer, as well as the new (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-tridecatriene.
The oils of Lomatium dissectum var. dissectum and L. dissectum var. multifidum were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. beta-Phellandrene/limonene (25.3%), beta-caryophyllene (10.8%), palmitic acid (6.6%), (E)-beta-ocimene (5.4%), linolenic acid (4.7%); palmitic acid (15.3%), octanol (9.0%), octyl acetate (5.3%), beta-caryophyllene (4.1%), linolenic acid (4.8%); myrcene (19.0%), 4-methylpentyl 2-methylbutyrate (13.9%), limonene (5.8%), alpha-bisabolol (5.1%), cuparene (5.0%), 4-methylhexyl 2-methylbutyrate (4.2%) constituted the major components of the respective hydrodistilled oils from the fruits, uppers (stems and leaves) and roots of L. dissectum var. dissectum. The corresponding oils from L. dissectum var. multifidum showed, palmitic acid (12.1%), palmitoleic acid (8.9%); decyl acetate (7.6%), linolenic acid (7.4%), linoleic acid (6.9%); (Z)-3-hexenol (18.5%), palmitic acid (8.6%), myrcene (6.0%), decyl acetate (4.9%), longifolene (4.2%); and myrcene (23.1%), longifolene (20.4%), limonene (6.0%), palmitoleic acid (5.1%) as the major components. The root oils of both varieties contained nearly 4% of a new hydrocarbon, (E)-2-methyl-3-octen-5-yne.
