Many people believe it absurd to seek evidence for - or against - personal survival of death. Some do so because they think, for a variety of reasons, that the idea of personal post-mortem survival makes no sense. Whether or not they are right they are at any rate consistent: nothing can be evidence for or against a nonsense. However, there are others who also believe that looking for evidence is absurd and yet do not similarly dismiss the idea as unintelligible. They allow that survival is possible and commonly hope it will ensue; but at the same time they insist that absolutely nothing helpful can be said on the subject.
Recombinant inbred (RI) strains of mice, their progenitor strains, and reciprocal F1 hybrids were compared with regard to wheel-running activity. The resulting strain distribution pattern (SDP), backcross data, and testing with congenic lines suggested a genetic model with a major locus for wheel-running. Correlations of the SDP for wheel-running and SDPs for testosterone and corticosterone levels determined immediately after testing were low and nonsignificant. Thus, all 3 phenotypic traits measured exhibited genetic variation, but variation in wheel-running was unrelated to variation in corticosterone and testosterone levels following a wheel-running experience.
Annual electric bike (e-bike) sales in China grew from 40,000 in 1998 to 10 million in 2005. This rapid transition from human-powered bicycles and gasoline-powered scooters to an all-electric vehicle/fuel technology system is special in the evolution of transportation technology and, thus far, unique to China. We examine how and why e-bikes developed so quickly in China with particular focus on the key technical, economic, and political factors involved. This case study provides important insights to policy makers in China and abroad on how timely regulatory policy can change the purchase choice of millions and create a new mode of transportation. These lessons are especially important to China as it embarks on a large-scale transition to personal vehicles, but also to other countries seeking more sustainable forms of transportation.
Within a comprehensive high school there are a number of separate communities. Members of each of these communities send and receive large amounts and varied formats of information through many different media. The school administration disseminates information through memos, bulletins and meetings to the other groups. The staff facilitates this communication by formatting and distributing much of the important information. Faculty members facilitate communication to students and share ideas with other faculty members through collegial communication. Students receive information from all of these sources and share it in many ways. Parents, Alumni, and the Local Community also exchange information by mail, phone calls, attendance at school functions and indirectly from students and from the media.
