Dietary diversity plays a vital role in disease prevention and management. Kulattha (Dolichos biflorus), commonly known as Horse gram, is a pulse of the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae) that is mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts under the Shamidhanya Varga and used as a key ingredient in several dietary and medicinal formulations. This underutilised neglected pulse, native to South India, is consumed worldwide in various forms, including sprouted or boiled seeds, ground flour, and health beverages, as well as in traditional Indian preparations such as yusha (soup), ladoo, snacks, and salads. kulttha is rich in carbohydrates and proteins and contains substantial amounts of trace minerals such as iron, molybdenum, and calcium, together with Vitamin A, protein, pentosan, and water-soluble gum; other notable constituents include collidine and genistein. Owing to its favourable amino acid profile, Kulattha is nutritionally superior to many other pulses and represents a valuable grain legume with considerable nutritional and therapeutic potential. This review compiles classical Ayurvedic descriptions and contemporary scientific evidence on the nutritional composition, therapeutic properties, and dietary applications of Kulattha, and highlights its promise as a functional food for preventing and managing lifestyle-related disorders.
Over the past ten years, internet usage has increased dramatically both in India and globally. Students are particularly vulnerable to internet addiction as faster and less expensive internet becomes more widely available. It is crucial to assess problematic internet usage (PIU) and its correlation with undergraduate students' mental health and physical inactivity because it can impede vital activities like pursuing formal education, amusement, and commerce. Aim and Objectives: To assess the prevalence of PIU and to examine its relationship with psychological well-being and physical inactivity among college students in Bhopal city. Materials and Methods: This study was a pilot study among 50 college students and used prestabilized modified structured questionnaires to collect data on sociodemographics, problematic internet uses, psychological distress, and physical activity. Data were collected using the short version of Young's Internet Addiction Test (YIAT), GHQ12, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: The mean age of the students was 21.5 years. The prevalence of PIU was 32% (Cronbach’s Alpha=.861)and 72% of students were minimal to mildly distressed, and 28% were moderately distressed (Cronbach’s alpha = .701). majority of students (86%) were physically inactive, PIU was positively associated with psychological distress (r = 0.336, p = 0.017), and a negative significant correlation was found between internet addiction and physical activity (r = -0.016, p-value = 0.911). Conclusions: PIU was widespread among college students, and a high percentage of students reported minimal to mild psychological distress and physical activity, emphasizing the need to raise awareness about its harmful impacts on psychological well-being and physical activity.
Obesity, a chronic condition that contributes to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular issues, stems from insufficient exercise, poor eating habits, and stress. As of 2022, obesity will affect one in eight people worldwide. In India, NFHS-5 data show that 23% of women and 22.1% of men are overweight, whereas 40% of women and 12% of men have abdominal obesity. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 31% of adults globally are physically inactive, which is a key factor in obesity. The WHO recommends 150 min of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly to manage obesity and metabolic disorders. This review assesses the efficacy of yoga techniques in obesity management through an examination of the existing research. This review incorporates yoga literature, health benefits from yoga classics, and outcomes from clinical studies on the health advantages of yoga practices. Yoga therapy offers a natural solution with minimal adverse effects and provides benefits beyond physical improvement. A specific yoga regimen, including Kapalbhati Pranayama, Trikonasana, Bhujangasana, Paschimottanasana, Naukasana, Halasana, Ardhachakrasana, Uttanapadasana, and Surya Namaskar, could control and prevent obesity and associated health issues. Thus, yoga therapy may serve as a valuable lifestyle intervention. This review highlights the impact of selected yogasanas on weight reduction and obesity management, which is supported by research findings. This demonstrates the effectiveness of yogic practices in controlling obesity and promoting yoga therapy as a cost-effective approach to obesity prevention and management.
Purpose: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various sectors, including education, and significantly impacting students' academic experiences from school to college. This study explores how BAMS undergraduate students perceive the use of AI and AI-based tools for educational purposes and assess their prakriti. Method: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted among undergraduate BAMS students of Pt. Khushilal Sharma, Govt. Ayurveda College and Institute campus, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh State, Central India, 200 undergraduate students aged 18 to 30. The collected data were analyzed using the software IBM SPSS Statistics Version 29.0.2.0(20). Data analysis used descriptive statistics (frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation, etc.) as appropriate and inferential statistics (reliability, validity, and regression). Result: Among 200 undergraduate students, 33% were male and 67% were female. The mean age of students was 23.3±1.92(SD) years. 40% students belonged to Vatapittaja, 34% to Pittakaphaja, 22% to Kaphavataja, and 4% to Vatapitttakaphaja prakriti. The finding indicated that 78.5% of students were familiar with AI concepts. ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Google Assistant emerged as the most frequently used AI tools. Only 6.5% of students use AI tools daily for academic purposes. Most of the students were satisfied with using AI tools for study purposes. Conclusion: The surveyed students had little formal or informal experience with AI tools and limited awareness of AI's potential applications in education. However, they generally held positive opinions about ChatGPT, Grammarly, and AI and were hopeful about AI's future role in medical education and health care.
Finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.), commonly known as ragi, has been traditionally consumed in various regions, and its nutritional profile holds significant promise for combating nutritional anemia and lifestyle diseases. Rich in essential nutrients like iron, calcium, dietary fiber, and polyphenols, finger millet offers several health benefits. This review highlights its preventive potential against nutritional anemia, primarily due to its iron content, and its role in managing lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. The bioactive compounds in finger millet, such as antioxidants and phytochemicals, contribute to its anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering effects. Moreover, its low glycemic index aids in better blood sugar management, making it a suitable dietary option for diabetic patients. The review also discusses challenges related to bioavailability and processing methods that may affect nutrient retention. In conclusion, incorporating finger millet into diets could serve as a preventive strategy against nutritional anemia and various lifestyle diseases, promoting overall health and well-being.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects around 537 million people globally, with 77 million cases in India. Type 2 DM is primarily linked to poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles, leading to either insulin resistance or impaired insulin secretion. In Ayurveda this condition is referred to as Apathyanimmataja Prameha. To promote healthier food choices, the Indian government declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets, emphasizing their significant health benefits. Historically, millets, known as "Shri Anna," were among the first domesticated crops in India and were a staple food across Asia. However, with the Green Revolution prioritizing the mass production of rice and wheat, millet cultivation declined. Millets are classified as "Nutri Cereal" due to their low glycemic index (GI), gluten-free nature, and rich content of flavonoids, vitamins (E, B complex), minerals, and antioxidants. They help prevent various lifestyle diseases and have demonstrated antidiabetic effects. Specifically, Kodo, Sorghum, and foxtail millets have shown significant impact on controlling hyperglycemia, as confirmed by studies. Ayurvedic texts also recommend these millets as a wholesome diet, particularly in managing conditions like Prameha (diabetes) and obesity. This article draws data from Ayurvedic texts, previous dissertations, and electronic databases like ResearchGate and PubMed and Google Scholar. It explores the pharmacodynamic properties of Kodo, Sorghum, and foxtail millets focusing on their preventive and therapeutic effects in managing type 2 DM by integrating both Ayurvedic and modern scientific research.
ABSTRACT Background: The development of smartphones has caused a dramatic change in societies worldwide. It is one of the best tools that have integrated communication, education, and entertainment. Exploration of the connection between unbalanced use and different aspects of health will be evaluated such as addiction/problematic smartphone usage (PSU), social influences, and brain changes. Objective: The objective of the study was to identify the prevalence and consequences of PSU on physical and mental health among college students of Bhopal city. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out as a pilot study among 50 college students who have been using smartphones. Self-reported questionnaire containing data related to the use of smartphone, and its impact on mental health had been collected by smartphone addiction scale-short version and generalized anxiety disorder-7. Results: The present study reported 66% of students were smartphone addicted (55% males, 46% females), and 46% of students were using smartphone more than 6 h per day. Seventy percent of students were using smartphone >5 years. In this study, 67% of addicted students were having anxiety. Sixty-one percent of addicted students were found in 25–30 years of age group which is higher than 18–24 years of age group (only 39% of students were addicted). Twenty-one percent of addicted students were having dry eye syndrome. Twenty-one percent of addicted students were found overweight and obese. Conclusions: The prevalence of PSU was quite high among the college students and maximum students reported anxiety and dry eye syndrome. It is necessity of today’s era to develop awareness regarding PSU and its negative impact on physical as well as mental health.
Bronchial Asthma is a major non-communicable disease affecting both children and adults, nearly 262 million people in India suffer from asthma (WHO). It is a chronic disorder that affects the airways and characterized by bronchial hyper-reactivity and reversible airway obstruction. It could be correlated as Tamak shwasa in Ayurveda and considered as Pranvaha srotho vikara. The Pathya Aahar and Vihara, having Vata and Kapha alleviating properties can bring them to normalcy. The preventive and curative aspects of Ayurveda revolve around the central theme of Pathya Aahara and Vihara as Ayurveda advocates that Pathya is the secret of wellness whereas Apathya is the root cause of all diseases. Proper diet and implementation of right life style is necessary for better quality of life. Hence this review article defines the properties of various Pathya and Apathya Aahara Dravyas described in Ayurveda classics with view of modern scientific researches.
Dyslipidemia is defined as abnormal amount of lipids in the blood. It is a metabolic disorder, manifested as increased plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride or a decrease in high density lipoprotein. Dyslipidemia is the main disposing factor for the atherosclerosis, and the atherosclerosis is the main pathogenesis factor for cardiovascular disease. In Ayurvedic view, dyslipidemia can be considered similar to aggravated Dusta Meda Dhatu in the body which is caused due to hypofunction of Medo-Dhatwagni leading to Medovaha Srotodusti Vikara. Nidanparivarjana is the main treatment principle of Ayurveda. For dyslipidemia, diet which is Laghu, Ruksha, Kaphamedohara and Srotoshodhana property should be followed. While, Guru, Snigdha, Kaphamedokara and Abhishyandhi food should be avoided. According to Bhaisjya Ratnawali, Pathya for Hridroga are Dadima, Shunthi, Yavani, Patol etc while Apathya are Ksheer Vikruti, Dadhi, Guru Bhojan etc. Using healthy diet rich in complex carbohydrates, vegetables, and fruits seasoned with adequate quantity of spices with minimum amount of oils and fats are ideal for management and prevention of dyslipidemia. Ayurveda consider cow ghee as healthiest source of dietary fat and have rejuvenating property, improves memory and strengthens nervous, eyes and protects the body from various diseases by balancing all three Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kaph) and advocates it’s use in daily diet to maintain health. Though, today concept of healthy eating has become synonym to avoid ghee. Aim: To assess the efficacy of Cow Ghee on Lipid Profile and Blood Sugar levels in Healthy Volunteers. Materials and methods: This was a Single blind randomized control clinical study. 60 healthy volunteers (30 in each group) between the age group 25-45 years were randomly selected. FBS was assessed based on WHO Guideline and Complete lipid profile was assessed based on ATP III Guideline. Statistical analysis used: result was assessed using Paired and unpaired t test with the help of Graph Pad InStat-3 software. Results: The slight increase in FBS, TC, TGs, VLDL, and HDL was recorded with mean difference 2.054, 2.91 (p = 0.4376), 21.568 (p = 0.0024), 4.141 (p = 0.0039), and 2.068 (p=0.0483) respectively compare to mean difference 10.260, 5.835 (p=0.2348), 16.88 (p=0.0297), 3.39 (p = 0.0274), and no change in HDL in placebo control group. While decrease in LDL by mean difference 3.291 (p = 0.3786) was recorded in cow ghee group compare to increase in mean difference 1.497 (p = 0.7844) in placebo control group. Conclusion: study reveals no adverse effect of consumption of 15-gram cow ghee daily for 45 days on lipids and FBS.
Allergic Rhinitis has been recognized as global health problem which impairs quality of life and work efficiency of the person. It is an IgE mediated inflammation of nasal mucosa caused by allergen. Aim: Combined efficacy of the Shadbindu Taila Pratimarsha Nasya along with oral administration of Ghrit Bhrisht Haridra powder (Cow ghee roasted Curcuma longa L.) compare with oral administration of Ghrit Bhrisht Haridra powder alone in the management of Vataja Pratishyaya (Allergic Rhinitis). Material and Methods: This was randomized, open label clinical study. Randomly selected 60 patients of Vataja Pratishyaya were randomly divided into two groups (30 in each group). Allergic Rhinitis was assessed based on TNSS score, ESR and AEC. Group A patients were treated with combine therapy while Group B were advised to take only Ghrit Bhrisht Haridra powder for 45 days. Statistical analysis used: Relief in the symptoms were assessed in percentage and result were assessed by signed-ranks test, Mann Whitney, paired and unpaired ‘t’ test. Results: In group ‘A’ patients, 12.04% decrease in ESR was reported with (p<0.0001), while in group B only 3.57% decrease in ESR reported with (p=0.0029). Relief observed in Group ‘A’ on symptoms Rhinorrhoea, Nasal Itching, Nasal Obstruction and Sneezing were 73.66%, 94.74%, 86.90%, 88.15% respectively compare to 47.56%, 38.05%, 54.24%, 44.16% in Group ‘B’ with (p<0.0001) in both groups. Conclusion: Study suggested use of combined Ayurvedic therapy (Shadbindu Taila Pratimarsha Nasya along with oral administration of Ghrit Bhrisht Haridra powder) as therapeutic measure for Vataja Pratishyaya.
Background: Decreased ability to fall asleep and/or stay asleep with daytime effects of sleep deprivation is identified as primary insomnia. Elderly due to the predominant Vata Dosha in the body are easily affected by this problem. Brimhana Nasya (nourishing nasal drop) with Ksheera Bala Taila and oral administration of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) root powder both are indicated in Ayurvedic classics for the management of insomnia. Aim: To determine the combined efficacy of oral administration of Ashwagandha root powder along with Brimhana Nasya with Ksheera Bala Taila in primary insomnia in geriatric. Materials and methods: This was randomized, open-label clinical study conducted at the hospital of Pt. Khushilal Sharma Government Ayurveda College and Institute Bhopal. Randomly selected 60 elderly patients with primary insomnia were randomly divided into two groups (30 in each group). Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess the symptoms of primary insomnia. Relief in the subjective symptoms was assessed in percentage. Then, the statistical significance of result within the group was assessed using Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test and the comparative effect of therapy in both groups was assessed using Mann-Whitney test. Graph Pad InStat-3 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: On subjective sleep quality 86.66% relief with P < 0.0001, on sleep latency 60.02% improvement with P < 0.0001, improvement in sleep duration was reported in 89.15% of patients with P < 0.0001 and improvement in sleep efficiency was reported in 90.14% of patients with statistically extremely significant P < 0.0001 were observed in combined therapy group (Ksheera Bala Taila Brimhana Nasya along with oral administration of Ashwagandha root powder). While 38.66% improvement in sleep efficiency, 40.39% relief in sleep disturbances and 37.05% improvement on subjective sleep quality was reported in group B patients, i.e., Ashwagandha root powder group. Conclusion: In 30 days treatment combined therapy was found more effective in the management of primary insomnia in the elderly compared with Ashwagandha root powder alone.
Background: Prehypertension is classified as elevated blood pressure above normal by American medical classification. JNC 7 suggested systolic between 120 to 139 mmHg or diastolic 80 to 89 mmHg should be consider as Pre-hypertension. Oxidative stress develops due to stress and anxiety is recognized as main risk factor for initiation of hypertension. The Nada Yoga (sound based yoga) practices has been reported to decreases stress and anxiety. Nisha Amalaki Churna the combination of Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) and Haridra (turmeric) powder also reported to effectively reduces oxidative stress. Aim - To assess the combined effect of Indian Classical Raga Ahirbhairav and Hindol along with Nisha Amalaki Churna on Prehypertension. Material and method- It was clinical study. Total 48 patients selected by purposive sample technique and then divided into 2 groups (n = 24 each) randomly. Assessment was done by criteria of pre hypertension given by JNC 7. Result - In present study group A (Raga Ahirbhairav, Raga Hindol and Nisha Amalki Churna) patients the mean score of Systolic B.P. had decreased from 135.50 to 120.76 (Mean difference 14.74) with extremely significance (p < 0.0001) compare to group B (only Nisha Amalki Churna orally) and mean score of Diastolic B.P. had decreased from 88.61 to 79.706 (Mean difference 8.904) with extremely significant (p < 0.0001) compare to group B. Relief in mild headache 31.94% (p<0.01), relief in Anxiety 52.67% (p<0.0001) and relief on stress was reported 34.56% (p<0.0001) in Group A were reported, compare to Group B. Conclusion- result of study indicating that Raga therapy with Nisha Amalaki Churna had potential in the management of pre hypertension.

Among these sense organs, Ayurveda given prime importance to the Chakshurindriya (eye) and says “Sarvendriyaanam Nayanam Pradhanam” . Ayurveda aimed in prevention and cure of disease, Dinacharya is one of the concept which helps to fulfill this aim of Ayurveda. In Ayurveda text given various daily regimen like Anjana (collyrium), Padabhyanga (Foot Massage), Nasya (Nasal application of drugs), Snana (Bath), Netraprakshalna (eye wash), Netra Vyayamas (Eye exercise), Padaprakshalan (Cleaning foot) and Padatra Dharan (Use of footwear), Chhatra Dharan (Use of umbrella) for prevention of eye disease as well as maintenance and promotion of eye health. Introduction: Dyslipidemia is a group of disorders of lipoprotein metabolism, which includes over production or deficiency of lipoproteins or both. In developed countries, most of dyslipidemias are hyperlipidemias; that is, an elevation of lipids in the blood, which is an important risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. The prevalence of dyslipidemia is very high in India, which calls for urgent lifestyle intervention strategies to prevent and manage this important cardiovascular risk factor. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of Ashvattha Patra in dyslipidemia. Materials and Methods: A total number of 41 patients were included in the study and were randomly divided into two groups. Patients of Group A were treated with 100 ml of Ashvattha Patra Kwath (decoction) and Group B patients were provided 100 ml lukewarm water as placebo for 45 days. The outcome of clinical treatment was analyzed statistically using paired, unpaired t-test on GraphPad-Instat software Version 3.06. Results: Significant improvements were seen in total cholesterol, serum triglyceride level, and serum very low-density lipoprotein level not significant result recorded in serum low-density lipoproteins level. Conclusion: Decoction of leaves of Ficus religiosa was able to work on lipid and lipoprotein significantly.

Diabetes is an “iceberg” disease. The prevalence of Diabetes is rapidly rising all over the globe at an alarming rate. Diabetes Mellitus occurs throughout the world, but it is more common; especially Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus in the developed countries. WHO predicted that 30 million people were diagnosed with Diabetes worldwide in 1985, by 1995 the number had risen to 135 million and at the current rate there will be some 592 million by the year 2035 . In India, it is estimated that by year 2045 it is rise to 134.3 million (IDF). In Ayurvedic classics almost all the Acharyas has quoted Amalaki as a Rasayana and highlighted it’s Pramehaghna property too. Our ancient Acharyas have described Amalaki as a antidiabetic drug on the basis of its Rasa, Guna, Veerya, Vipaka and Karma. In Indian subcontinent it is also said that this is the mythical 'World Tree' or the 'Tree of Life'. Through the ancient times it is widely being used to treatment of various diseases like constipation, dysentery, skin diseases, heart diseases, snakebite. Diabetes is a silent killer affecting millions and millions of people and poses a grave threat to the earth's population.Previously Diabetes has considered as a disorder of elderly, now a day's status has changed, and it has become a major cause of morbidity and mortality affecting the youth and middle aged people.On etiological basis Diabetes has classified into two main types as type 1 and type 2. Type -2 Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder presented by Hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin secretion, action or both.Both forms of Diabetes can lead to several microvascular and macrovascular multisystem complications.One way to keep diabetes and its complications under control is; early detection of the disease and to adopt the healthy lifestyle.W.H.O.emphasizes on the using of traditional drugs with the lowest side effects to control Diabetes symptoms.Ayurvedic literature explains it under the heading of Prameha/Madhumeha.Madhumeha (subtype of Vataj Prameha) is a disease which resembles with Diabetes Mellitus.Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is mainly associated with Avaranjanya samprapti and sthool pramehi or Apathyanimittaja Pramehi can be correlated to patients of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.Acharya Sushrutha and Charaka emphasized the importance of diet and exercise in the management of Diabetes.Both has mentioned that patients of Diabetes should take the diet combined with Flaxseed oil (C.Chi.6/20, S. Chi.31/5) and several researches also proved the positive effect of Atasi on inflammation, glycemic control and oxidative stress.Thus for present study Atasi has selected and clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients of Type 2 D.M. for 45 days.These patients were divided into 2 groups as group A (Atasi) and group B (Placebo).After 45 days, results showed significant improvement on subjective and objective parameters in group A i.e.Atasi group
