To comprehensively elucidate the effect of the East Asian monsoon on biogenic secondary organic aerosol (BSOA) in the background region, 11 BSOA tracers and 2 biomass burning tracers in total suspended particles were continuously collected from 2011 to 2015 at the Kanazawa University Wajima Air Monitoring Station (KUWAMS). The concentration of isoprene-derived BSOA tracers (SOA(i)) peaked in summer (21.2 ng/m(3)) and was lowest in winter (3.42 ng/m(3)). The concentration of alpha/beta-pinene-derived BSOA tracers (SOA(m)) was higher in spring (12.5 ng/m(3)) and summer (11.4 ng/m(3)). The beta-caryophyllene-derived BSOA tracer (SOA(c)) had a peak concentration in spring (2.95 ng/m(3)) and a low in fall (2.09 ng/m(3)). The analysis of BSOA correlations with biomass burning tracer, combined with Potential Source Contribution Function analysis and Positive Matrix Factorization Model results, demonstrated that although long-range transportation under the East Asian winter monsoon presents impact on BSOA in the background region, local and domestic contributions remain the dominant factor. From 2011 to 2015, under the variation of local and domestic vegetation and biological diversity, SOA(i) concentration presented an overall increasing trend (0.34/yr, p = 0.09) while SOA(m) (-1.52/yr, p < 0.05) and SOA(c) (-1.36/yr, p < 0.05) concentration significantly decreased.
To clarify the pollution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in the East Asian monsoon region under different atmospheric environments and to assess their potential influences on receptor areas, this study selected two background monitoring stations with different environments in Shimane Prefecture, Japan: a marine station (MB) and a forest station (SF). PM2.5 samples were simultaneously collected using a high-volume sampler during the summer and winter of 2022–2023, and ten PAHs and three NPAHs were quantified using HPLC. The concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs at MB and SF exhibited significant seasonal variations in 2022 (winter > summer). However, in 2023, a clear seasonal difference was observed only at MB. Isomer ratio analysis of PAHs at both stations indicated that traffic emissions and biomass or coal combustion were major contributors. Seasonal variations in the [2-NFR]/[1-NP] ratio indicated that, while high ratios at MB and SF during summer were mainly associated with local photochemical formation, low ratios in winter reflected long-range transportation of combustion-derived PAHs and NPAHs from the Asian continent. Incremental lifetime cancer risk values (10−7 to 10−11) indicated that even at background stations, the atmospheric environment poses certain health risks. This first comparative investigation of PAHs and NPAHs at two distinct background stations in Shimane again highlights the importance of international cooperation among East Asian countries for effective air pollution control.
This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the seasonal and interannual characteristics of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) at the Kanazawa University Wajima Air Monitoring Station (KUWAMS), a background site in Japan, from 2016 to 2021. Typical anthropogenic pollutants, including nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and two biomass burning tracers were observed simultaneously. During the sampling periods, the highest concentrations of OC (0.84 μg/m3) and EC (0.10 μg/m3) were observed in spring, followed by winter (OC: 0.58 μg/m3; EC: 0.09 μg/m3), fall (OC: 0.47 μg/m3; EC: 0.06 μg/m3), and summer (OC: 0.24 μg/m3; EC: 0.03 μg/m3). In spring, fall, and winter, OC and EC concentrations were influenced by mixed contributions from fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning, while a relatively higher impact from traffic emission was observed in summer. Excluding the high polluted episode from fall 2018 to spring 2019, EC concentrations exhibited a significant decreasing trend in spring (z = -4.25, p < 0.01), fall (z = -7.70, p < 0.05), and winter (z = -7.80, p < 0.01) from 2016 to 2021, reflecting the effectiveness of continuous emission control measures implemented by the Chinese government. In contrast, OC concentrations did not present similar decreasing trends in cold seasons (spring: z = 7.35, p < 0.01; fall: z = 4.85, p < 0.01; winter: z = 2.45, p < 0.05), indicating a more complex formation mechanism for OC. These findings emphasize the necessity of improving OC emission control, particularly secondary OC, in upwind regions such as northern China and domestic Japan to mitigate atmospheric pollution and its impact on climate change.
Understanding aerosol distribution in Ghana is vital for protecting health, improving air quality, and enhancing climate resilience. The aerosol distribution over Ghana was examined using estimates of aerosol optical depth (AOD) from the Terra and Aqua satellites' Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for the years 2008–2019. The highest AOD (1.28) was recorded in the year 2016 in the month of February while the least AOD (0.29) was recorded in November 2019. In general, the first quarter of all the years showed higher aerosol loading, which decreased from April to October. Spatial analysis revealed that the AOD loading over the northern belt increased gradually toward the middle and southern belts in January, peaking in February. The slightly high AOD loading of the southern belt in comparison with the northern and middle belts can be explained by population density, urbanization and industrialization in the south. The relatively lower vegetation cover over the northern belt, coupled with the effect of Harmattan, might be the cause of the high loadings. Strong positive correlations of 0.93 and 0.17 low root mean square errors were found between the MODIS satellite AOD data and ground-based AERONET AOD data. Angstrom coefficient analysis revealed the dominance of coarse-mode aerosol presence in Ghana. Offering insight into more than a decade of AOD data, this study aids climate-resilient planning, public health protection, and sustainable environmental management across Ghana.
Moisture transports play a key role in maintaining the hydrometeorological cycle and forming its climate variability over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), also known as the “Asian water tower”. This study focuses on understanding the interannual variability mode characteristics of moisture transport in the TP in boreal summer, using satellite-based analysis and reanalysis data from 1983 to 2022 with a combined empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. We identified the first two primary interannual modes of TP summer water vapor fluxes, which are primarily characterized by zonal and meridional dipole patterns, respectively. The zonal pattern of the TP water vapor flux dominates the TP and East Asian summer rainfall variability, while the meridional pattern of the TP water vapor flux tends to be a result of the South Asian summer rainfall and its circulation anomalies. The tropical Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) variations, such as El Niño and Indian Ocean SST modes, have significantly delayed relationships with the interannual variability modes of the summer water vapor fluxes over the TP, indicating a significant modulation effect of the low-latitude oceanic variability on the interannual variations in TP summer moisture transport. These results deepen our understanding of the relationship between TP moisture transport and summer monsoonal rainfall variability, as well as the influence of the tropical oceans.

This report provides a thorough overview of the current state and growth trends of SIF research, and it helps researchers and practitioners understand the major areas of attention in this area and provides insights into prospective areas for further study.
Airborne microorganisms which dispersed from the Gobi Desert throughout East Asia via long-range dust transports, are believed to maintain their viability against atmospheric stressors that influence ecosystem dynamics and human health during deposition in downwind environments. However, the adaptative mechanisms that facilitate microbial tolerance to environmental stressor, and the persistence of factors such as antibiotic resistance relevant to human health have not been determined. Here, we described the metagenomic and physiological interrogation of airborne bacteria collected from aerosols at an altitude of 500 m using a balloon-mounted sampler and at a parallel site 3 m above the ground in the dust-source region of Gobi Desert. The shotgun metagenomic DNA sequencing which determine was performed for characterizing the taxonomic compositions of airborne bacteria and their potential functions. The communities were dominated by species in the phyla Actinobacteria, Bacillota, Bacteroidota, and Pseudomonadota (Alpha). Metabolic-pathway analysis revealed that Gobi Desert bioaerosols were enriched in functions associated with antibiotic resistance, cell-membrane transporters, and/or environmental adaptation. The antibiotic and osmotic-change resistances were confirmed among viable bacteria isolates showing higher level of resistances in the aerosols collected at 500 m than those of 3 m. These findings suggest that elevated altitudes result in environmental filtering that allows bacterial taxa to survive long-term transport to distant locations during dust events and transfer antibiotic resistance.
Elastic properties in the medium can affect piezomagnetic fields. In the paper, the heterogeneity effect of elastic properties on piezomagnetic fields has been investigated by constructing different dislocation models. The results show that the burial depth of the source and elastic properties in near-surface layer affect the heterogeneity effect significantly. However, the heterogeneity effect can be neglected when the dislocation source is buried under 5 km depth. When the dislocation reaches the surface, the heterogeneity effect mainly depends on the elastic properties in the near-surface layer. The smaller the elastic properties in the near-surface layer, the larger heterogeneity effect. The non-uniform slip model can reduce the heterogeneity effect.
Existing sub-grid parameterization schemes for clear-sky direct solar radiation (SPS-CSDSR) assume that the sub-grid cells have the same atmospheric transparency. This study shows that in undulating terrain, significant errors can occur when the sub-grid is in turbid weather or partly above the cloud top. A correction factor was proposed. It can effectively eliminate errors under a cloudless sky and can reduce some errors when part of the sub-grid is above the cloud or fog top. For atmospheric models with high horizontal resolution, example test verification shows that the cast shadowless coverage method can lead to large errors. It should no longer be used based on current computing power. These improvements and the high-precision fast terrain occlusion algorithm in Part I will allow SPS-CSDSR to achieve unprecedented high accuracy. Based on the proposed daily interpolation method, the high-precision SPS-CSDSR is also feasible for regional climate simulation. The analysis pointed out that the sub-grid terrain radiative effect (STRE) is distributed over inclined surfaces with larger areas and at different heights. Existing methods of coupling STRE on one flat surface have certain physical drawbacks. This paper suggests introducing parameterization of STRE at different altitudes and improving the coupling of land–air.
In atmospheric modeling, sub-grid parameterization is an important method for studying the topographic effects of solar radiation using high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. For reducing the amount of computation, some approximate methods that can lead to errors are used in existing sub-grid parameterization schemes for clear-sky direct solar radiation (SPS-CSDSR). The lack of a high-precision fast terrain occlusion algorithm (HPFTOA) remains one of the biggest constraints in this field. This study proposed an HPFTOA. It mainly uses two kinds of acceleration algorithms. One method is to use a dynamic, lossless, and fast occlusion search radius. Another way is to use the rectangular grid for calculations within the accuracy of DEM data to avoid coordinate projection conversions. The test results indicate that the HPFTOA can carry out large-scale computation based on DEM data with a resolution of 90 m. Because it rarely uses approximation algorithms and considers the curvature of the Earth, SPS-CSDSR can achieve unprecedented precision. The HPFTOA can also be used in the fields of mountain solar energy assessment, remote sensing, and telemetry, including terrain-obscuring the probe. As computer performance improves and algorithms and execution code are optimized, the application prospects will be very broad.

Boreal summer precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is difficult to predict in current climate models and has become a challenging issue. To address this issue, a new analog-based correction method has been developed. Our analysis reveals a substantial correlation between the prediction errors of TP summer precipitation (TPSP) and previous February anomalies of sea surface temperature (SST) in the key regions of tropical oceans. Consequently, these SST anomalies can be selected as effective predictors for correcting prediction errors. With remote-sensing-based and observational datasets employed as benchmarks, the new method was validated using the rolling-independent validation method for the period 1992–2018. The results clearly demonstrate that the new SST analog-based correction method of dynamical models can evidently improve prediction skills of summer precipitation in most TP regions. In comparison to the original model predictions, the method exhibits higher skills in terms of temporal and spatial skill scores. This study offers a valuable tool for effectively improving the TPSP prediction in dynamical models.
As a carcinogenic pollutant, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in the ambient air has serious influences on public health. Due to its instability and difficulty in chemical analysis, few studies have been conducted on the regional concentration level of environmental Cr(VI), especially in China. The pollution levels of Cr(VI) in ambient PM2.5 were determined in two sampling sites of Beijing and Qingdao from September to December 2020. The concentrations of Cr(VI) were determined using Ion Chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(IC-ICP-MS), and the Cr concentrations were simultaneously analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES). The main results are as follows: (1) Based on the analysis of samples collected at the sampling sites of Beijing and Qingdao, the concentrations of Cr(VI) in PM2.5 were (0.140 ± 0.065) ng/m3 and (0.091 ± 0.073) ng/m3, respectively; (2) During the sampling period, the mean ratio of Cr(VI) to Cr was (0.0623 ± 0.0969). The ratio of Cr(VI)/Cr in Beijing and Qingdao were 0.076 ± 0.104 and 0.041 ± 0.039, respectively. In conclusion, compared with other countries, the concentration of Cr(VI) at the sampling sites of Beijing and Qingdao showed lower values. The average concentration of Cr(VI) estimated by the ratio of this research in China is lower than that in South Korea and similar to those in Canada and Australia.
Atmospheric aerosols have significant impacts on climate and environment, so the study on aerosol optical properties is of great scientific significance for climate change and atmospheric environment. The variations in column-integrated aerosol optical properties over Beijing were investigated from March 2016 to December 2019 based on the SKYNET data products. Higher values of AOD and AE found in summer indicate that it is important to pay more attention to fine particle pollution in summer. By fitting the AOD data of SKYNET with AERONET at same waveband, we found that monthly variations in aerosol optical depth estimated from SKYNET observation were mostly consistent with the AERONET data. Aerosols were divided into several modes according to optical characteristics, which deepen some insight into aerosol optical and radiative properties and revealed that the weak absorption aerosol dominated and contributed much to the radiation transport in Beijing. Data derived from the polarization lidar CALIPSO were combined with aerosol optical depth (AOD) from SKYNET and these results were consistent, which further identified the scientific of data. The random forest algorithm was used to interpolate the missing AOD500nm observations. The original results and the interpolation results were fitted with MODIS respectively, which proved that the random forest algorithm can supplement the missing results well. This work will be of great significance in addressing the impacts of aerosols on climate and environment, and will help reduce the uncertainty of the impacts of aerosols on the Earth's radiation budget. All work will provide scientific support for the prevention and control of specific pollution.
Particulate matter-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) were first systematically studied in downtown (XT), suburban (GL) and rural (DA) sites in winter and summer in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 2019 to 2022. The mean concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs ranged from 0.76 ng m−3 to 50.2 ng m−3 and 6.07 pg m−3 to 1.95 ng m−3, respectively. The concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs in winter were higher than in summer, except for NPAHs in XT. We found the benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)/benzo[ghi]perylene (BgPe) ratio could effectively identify biomass burning in this study, in which a higher [BaP]/[BgPe] value indicates a greater effect of biomass burning on PAHs and NPAHs. The results indicated that atmospheric PAHs and NPAHs were mainly affected by motor vehicles (especially the unique motorcycles in Southeast Asia) in the summer in Hanoi. In winter, all sites were affected by the burning of rice straw to varying degrees, especially DA. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) in Hanoi was first determined through ingestion, inhalation and dermal absorption. The results showed that residents in Hanoi faced high health risks, while females experienced higher health risks than males. The ingestion and dermal pathways indicated higher exposure risks than the usually considered inhalation pathway.
In the context of global warming, with the increasing tropospheric ozone concentration and the obvious trend of aridity, terrestrial ecosystems are experiencing multiple pressures. However, there are still many uncertainties in modeling the effects of ozone on ecosystem productivity. In this study, an ozone uptake module was coupled to the BEPS (Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator) model, and the new version, the BEPS-O3 model, was used to simulate the impacts of ozone on the gross primary productivity (GPP) of woodland and grassland ecosystems in China. Observational data from four sites were used to verify and improve the models, namely, DXG (grassland), HBG (shrub), DHS (evergreen broad-leaved) and CBS (coniferous forest). The regional results show that the total GPP of forest, grassland and shrub in China was 3.62 Pg C, 0.75 Pg C 0.33 Pg C in 2016, respectively. The GPP loss of forests, grasslands and shrubs caused by ozone was 2.8% and 1.1% and 1.5% of the GPP in woodland and grassland ecosystems, respectively (excluding farmland). Subtropical regions experienced the worst GPP losses, although ozone concentrations were not high. However, higher stomatal conductance leads to higher ozone absorption. By comparing the parameters of previous studies, we conclude that the ozone uptake function was better than the ozone exposure function in modeling. Furthermore, the selection of the ozone uptake function will have a significant impact on the final simulation results, especially for grassland.
Asian dust (AD) events and total suspended particles (TSPs) were observed at the Kanazawa University Wajima Air Monitoring Station (KUWAMS), a Japanese background site, during the East Asian winter monsoon periods (from November to May of the following year) from 2010 to 2021. Nine kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in each TSP sample. In this study, a total of 54 AD events were observed. According to the different pathways of long-range transportation, AD events were divided into AD-high events (transported at higher altitudes, approximately 4000 m) and AD-low events (transported at lower altitudes, approximately 2500 m). The TSP concentrations increased sharply in the AD events and were higher in the AD-high events (39.8 ± 19.5 μg/m3) than in the AD-low events (23.5 ± 10.5 μg/m3). AD did not have a significant effect on the ΣPAHs characteristic variation, as ΣPAHs (ΣPAHs = fluoranthene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, and indeno [1,2,3-cd]pyrene) concentrations in non-AD periods, AD-high events, and AD-low events were 543 ± 374, 404 ± 221, and 436 ± 265 pg/m3, respectively. The PAH compositions were also consistent. As a result, the TSP concentration was affected by the input air mass transported at higher altitudes from the desert region while the PAH concentration was impacted by the air mass at lower altitudes, which carried the PAHs emitted from fossil fuels and biomass combustion in northeastern China. Moreover, the health risks of PAHs were calculated with the inhalation lifetime cancer risk, which ranged from 10−6 to 10−5 ng/m3, indicating a potential carcinogenic risk at the KUWAMS during the East Asian winter monsoon periods.
Shield tunnels assembled with general ring segments are widely used in urban areas. Segment assembly methods and widths cause changes in the mechanical properties of the structure and influence the seismic response of shield tunnels. To investigate the influence of the assembly method and width of the general ring segment on the seismic performance of a shield tunnel, a three-dimensional refined soil–structure dynamic interaction finite element model of the shield tunnel was established based on ABAQUS, and the mechanical response and joint deformation of the general ring lining under seismic loads were studied. The simulation results show the following: (i) The overall deformation of the tunnel lining is not significantly affected by the assembly method, and the difference is only 5.24% under a 0.4 g earthquake. (ii) The seismic responses of general ring tunnels with different assembly methods are quite different, and the mechanical properties of the shield tunnel assembled with the straight assembly method are better than those of the shield tunnel assembled with staggered joints, but the deformation of the structure is larger. Under the action of a 0.1 g earthquake, the radial force, circumferential force, and bending moment of the staggered 90° assembly tunnel are respectively reduced by 13.6%, 11.1%, and 17.8% compared with the staggered 45° assembly structure, but the maximum intra-opening deformation increases by 0.19, 0.58, and 2.4 mm, respectively. (iii) The internal force distribution of the bolts is controlled by the deformation of the joint; compared with the CF90 and TF assembled tunnels, the mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of the CF45 and CF90 assembled tunnels are more reasonable. (iv) The extrados and intrados joint opening deformation and shear dislocation of the 1.2 m wide general ring segment under the staggered assembly increase by 1.2 mm and 1.03 mm, respectively, compared with the 1.5 m wide segment, while the radial force, circumferential force, and bending moment are reduced by 24.4%, 36.5%, and 41.7%, respectively, indicating that the seismic performance of the shield tunnel with a segment width of 1.5 m is better than that of the shield tunnel with a width of 1.2 m.
The East Asian dust storms occur in western and northern China, and southern Mongolia every year, particularly in spring. In this study, we use satellite aerosol products to demonstrate the spatial and temporal variation in aerosol optical depth (AOD) from MODIS, and the absorbing aerosol index (AAI) from TOMS and OMI, over the main dust storm source regions (MDSR), and to investigate their relationship to vegetation coverage (NDVI), soil properties (surface soil moisture content and soil temperature 0–10 cm underground), and climatic factors (surface wind speed, air temperature at 2 m above the ground, and precipitation) in spring for the period of 2000–2021. Compared with dust storm occurrence frequency (DSF) observed at surface stations, MODIS AOD, TOMS AAI, and OMI AAI showed consistent spatial distributions and seasonal variations with DSF in the MDSR, with correlation coefficients of 0.88, 0.55, and 0.88, respectively. The results showed that AOD and AAI over the MDSR decreased during 2000–2005, 2006–2017, and 2000–2021, but increased during 2017–2021.The improvements in vegetation coverage and soil moisture together with favorable climatic factors (the increase in temperature and precipitation and the decrease in surface wind speed) resulted in the decreasing trend of AOD and AAI during 2000–2005, 2006–2017, and the entire period of 2000–2021. Conversely, the increase in surface wind speed, the decrease in temperature and the low soil moisture in 2018 and 2020 were the reasons for the increases in AOD and AAI over the MDSR during 2017–2021. The combination effects of surface wind, temperature, soil moisture, and vegetation coverage would determine DSF, AOD, and AAI, in the end, under global climate change.
In this study, the levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in PM2.5 samples were determined from 2020 to 2021 in Singapore. For analysis convenience, the sampling period was classified according to two monsoon periods and the inter-monsoon period. Considering Singapore’s typically tropical monsoon climate, the four seasons were divided into the northeast monsoon season (NE), southwest monsoon season (SW), presouthwest monsoon season (PSW) and prenortheast monsoon season (PNE)). The PM2.5 concentration reached 17.1 ± 8.38 μg/m3, which was slightly higher than that in 2015, and the average PAH concentration continuously declined during the sampling period compared to that reported in previous studies in 2006 and 2015. This is the first report of NPAHs in Singapore indicating a concentration of 13.1 ± 10.7 pg/m3. The seasonal variation in the PAH and NPAH concentrations in PM2.5 did not obviously differ owing to the unique geographical location and almost uniform climate changes in Singapore. Diagnostic ratios revealed that PAHs and NPAHs mainly originated from local vehicle emissions during all seasons. 2-Nitropyrene (2-NP) and 2-nitrofluoranthene (2-NFR) in Singapore were mainly formed under the daytime OH-initiated reaction pathway. Combined with airmass backward trajectory analysis, the Indonesia air mass could have influenced Singapore’s air pollution levels in PSW. However, these survey results showed that no effect was found on the concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs in PM2.5 in Indonesia during SW because of Indonesia’s efforts in the environment. It is worth noting that air masses from southern China could impact the PAH and NPAH concentrations according to long-range transportation during the NE. The results of the total incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) via three exposure routes (ingestion, inhalation and dermal absorption) for males and females during the four seasons indicated a low long-term potential carcinogenic risk, with values ranging from 10−10 to 10−7. This study systematically explains the latest pollution conditions, sources, and potential health risks in Singapore, and comprehensively analyses the impact of the tropical monsoon system on air pollution in Singapore, providing a new perspective on the transmission mechanism of global air pollution.
