Slenderness is a remarkable geometrical characteristic of thin steel plates. When a slender plate is subjected to an axial compression loading, a mechanical behavior called buckling can occur, causing an out-of-plane displacement. This instability phenomenon can be divided into elastic buckling (linear) and elasto-plastic buckling (nonlinear), depending on dimensional, constructive, or operational aspects. Moreover, in several practical situations, it is necessary to provide holes on thin steel plates, causing stress redistribution and changes in its buckling behavior. The present work purposes a buckling study in square and rectangular plates, simply supported, with two different centered perforations types: longitudinal hexagonal and transverse hexagonal. Numerical simulation, using the ANSYS® software, was employed to determine the critical buckling load and the ultimate buckling load of the plates. The constructal design method was applied, allowing evaluating the variation effect of the degree of freedom H0/L0 (being H0 the width and L0 the length of the perforation) on the plate’s mechanical buckling behavior. The hole volume fraction (ϕ) was another considered parameter, corresponding to cutouts of 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% of the total plate volume. The results showed the direct influence of the H0/L0 ratio on the buckling type, allowing the definition of a buckling stress limit curve for each cutout type and hole volume fraction. Besides, the constructal design method, associated with the exhaustive search technique, enabled to define the optimized geometric configuration for each hole type that conducted the plate to a maximized mechanical performance.
There are several areas of engineering that use thin plates as structural elements, among them, we can highlight their application in the construction of offshore structures, bridges, ship hulls, and aircraft fuselage. In some design situations, the plates may be subjected to compression stresses and, consequently, they may be under the effect of elastic and/or elasto-plastic buckling. The analysis of the buckling phenomenon presents significant differences between one-dimensional elements, such as beams and columns, and two-dimensional elements, such as plates. The buckling phenomenon is directly related to dimensional, constructive and/or operational aspects. In this sense, the presence of perforations in plates causes a redistribution of their stresses, affecting not only their resistance but also their buckling characteristics. In order to solve the problem of elasto-plastic buckling in thin steel plates with perforations, we used computational models developed in Ansys(R) software, which is based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). For the analysis, it was considered perforated plates with constant thickness h for the relationships H/L = 1.0 and H/L = 0.5, where H is the plate width and L is the plate length. For the volume fraction Ф, i.e., the ratio between the volume of the perforation and the volume of the plate, the following values were considered: 0.08; 0.10; 0.15; 0.20 and 0.25. In addition, the plates were considered to have centralized perforations with the following geometric forms: longitudinal oblong, transverse oblong, elliptic, rectangular, diamond, longitudinal hexagonal, and transverse hexagonal. The shape variation of each perforation type occurs through the ratio H0/L0, being H0 and L0 the characteristics dimensions of perforation. The Constructal Design method was employed to define the range of possible geometries for the perforated plates, allowing an adequately comparison about the von Mises stress distribution among the studied cases. The results show that the geometric shape variation, for all analyzed perforation types, leads to an optimum geometry.
Perforated steel thin plates are commonly used in structural engineering. Due to their geometric characteristics, these panels can suffer the undesired buckling phenomenon. In this context, the present work associates the computational modeling and the constructal design method to evaluate the influence of the geometric configuration in the plate buckling behavior, using the exhaustive search method to determine which geometries conduct to superior mechanical behavior. To do so, numerical models are employed to solve elastic and elasto-plastic buckling of plates having a centered perforation. Different hole types (longitudinal oblong, transversal oblong, elliptical, rectangular, diamond, longitudinal hexagonal, or transversal hexagonal) with different shapes (variation of characteristics dimensions of each hole type) are analyzed. Limit curves to avoid buckling were obtained, as well as the definition of the geometries that can improve up to 107% the plate performance.
Perforated steel plates are structural components widely employed in engineering. In several applications these panels are subjected to axial compressive load, being undesired the occurrence of buckling. The present work associates the computational modeling and the constructal design method to obtain geometries, which maximizes the mechanical behavior for these components. A numerical model was used to tackle with elastic and elasto-plastic buckling. Square and rectangular plates with centered elliptical cutouts were considered and several hole volume fractions and ratios between the ellipse axes (H 0/L 0) were taken into account. Stress limit improvements around 100% were achieved depending only on the cutout shape.
Thin steel plates - with or without cutouts - are structural components largely used in several engineering applications as buildings, bridges, ships, airplanes and automobiles. However, if an axial compressive load is imposed to these panels an undesired instability phenomenon can occur: buckling. At a certain load magnitude the limit stress is reached and the plate suffers lateral displacements (out of plane) indicating the buckling occurrence. In plates an elastic buckling or an elastoplastic buckling can occur, depending on dimensional, constructive or operational aspects. Therefore, in the present work, the Constructal Design method was adopted to investigate the influence of the type and shape of the cutout in the plate buckling. To do so, by means the Finite Element Method (FEM), computational models were developed to simulate the elastic (linear) and elasto-plastic (nonlinear) plate buckling. Square and rectangular thin steel plates, simply supported in its four edges, with a centered cutout, were analyzed, being the objective function to maximize the buckling limit stress, avoiding the plate buckling occurrence. The square and rectangular plates have a ratio H/L (ratio between height and length of the plate) of 0.5 and 1.0, respectively. A value of 0.2 for the cutout volume fraction (ratio between the cutout volume and the total plate volume) was adopted for different types of cutout: diamond, longitudinal hexagonal, transversal hexagonal, elliptical, and rectangular. The cutout shape variations were produced by the H-0/L-0 degree of freedom (which relates the characteristic dimensions of the cutout). The results showed that the cutout shape variation has a fundamental influence in the plate buckling behavior, determining if the buckling is elastic or elasto-plastic, allowing the definition of a buckling stress limit curve for each studied cutout type. In addition, it was observed that the Constructal Design method conduct to the definition of optimal geometries, reaching buckling stress limit improvements around 100%.
Buckling is an instability phenomenon that can happen in slender structural components when subjected to a compressive axial load. This phenomenon can occur due to an externally applied force, which when exceed a certain limit, called critical load, will promote the mechanical buckling on the structural member. Another buckling possibility happens to statically indeterminate structural elements when submitted to a positive temperature variation. As the axial displacements are restricted, if the temperature gradient is larger than the critical temperature variation, it will be generated a compressive axial load higher than the critical load of the structural component and the thermal buckling will occur. In this context, the present work presents a computational model to solve the thermal buckling problem of columns. A thin shell finite element, called SHELL93, was adopted for the computational domain discretization. It was employed a solution involving homogeneous algebraic equations, where the critical temperature variation is determined by the smallest eigenvalue and the buckled configuration is defined by its associated eigenvector. A case study was performed considering a steel column with three different support conditions at its ends: fixed-fixed, fixed-pinned, and pinned-pinned. The numerical results obtained for the critical temperature variation showed a maximum absolute difference around 2% when compared to the analytical solutions. Moreover, the buckled shape of the column, for each case, was defined in agreement with the configurations found in literature. Therefore, the computational model was verified, i.e., it is able to satisfactorily predict the mechanical behavior of the thermal buckling of columns. So, it is possible to use this numerical model in practical situations that do not have an analytical solution, as is the case of the thermal buckling of columns with cutouts.

This work uses the Constructal Design method in the numerical study of geometric configuration of a Tshaped material of high thermal conductivity which minimizes the resistance of heat flux, since the areas occupied by the materials of high and low conductivity are kept constant. To solve numerically the heat diffusion equation it is used the finite element method (FEM), more specifically the PDETOOL of MATLAB. The objective is to minimize the thermal resistance of the heat generating system, with low thermal conductivity, by inserting a T-shaped pathway, whose material has high thermal conductivity and constant volume, being the dimensions of single and bifurcated branches free to vary. The optimal geometry of this material was that which led to lower thermal resistance. The results showed that the optimal geometry leads to a decrease of the minimum dimensionless maximum temperature in about 33% in comparison with a non-optimized geometry. Finally, this study showed that the optimum geometry is the one that best distributes imperfections, i.e., the hot spots (points of maximum temperature), which is in agreement with the Constructal principle of optimal distribution of imperfection.
Many steel structures such as ships and offshore structures are composed by welded stiffened or unstiffened plate elements. Cutouts are often provided in these plate elements for inspection, maintenance, and service purposes, and the size of these holes could be significant. In many situations, these plates are subjected to axial compressive forces which make them prone to instability or buckling. If the plate is slender, the buckling is elastic. However, if the plate is sturdy, it buckles in the plastic range causing the so-called inelastic (or elasto-plastic) buckling. Furthermore, the presence of these holes redistributes the membrane stresses in the plate and may cause significant reduction in its strength in addition to changing its buckling characteristics. So, the objective of this paper is to investigate the changes that the presence of circular holes produces in the elastic and inelastic buckling of steel rectangular plates. The finite element method (FEM) has been used to evaluate the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling load of uniaxially loaded rectangular plates with circular cutouts. By varying the hole diameter, the plate aspect ratio and the plate thickness during the analyses, the changes in the plate buckling behavior can be determined. The results show that while the circular hole can in some cases even increase the elastic buckling load, the elasto-plastic buckling load is reduced by the presence of the cutout.
