This chapter discusses the transformation of higher education with respect to universities’ attempt to compete for the best students. The imperative of mobilization and optimization within higher education begins even before enrolment on the course of study when universities engage in the expectation management of potential students. Our main thesis is that this expectation management is increasingly supplemented by quantification, which brings the possibility of predicting student success. Accordingly, the governmental subjectification of the ‘promising student’ is provided by data and is an omnipresent discourse for prospective students. In the first part of the chapter, we delineate how competitiveness has evolved in the area of teaching and study in the university. In the second section, we refer to study choice instruments that have become an important instrument in Germany to manage the expectations of prospective students. In the subsequent sections, we demonstrate the interrelation of competitiveness, datafication and subjectivity. However, we also reflect on the educational challenges that result from this interrelation and what it means for ‘study culture’ and higher education in general.

Zusammenfassung Ist die Diskursforschung disziplinär oder interdisziplinär zu verorten? Ausgehend von dieser Frage wird die Perspektive umgekehrt und Disziplinarität selbst als diskursives Phänomen betrachtet. Im Beitrag wird die These entfaltet, dass Disziplinarität in diskursiven Praktiken des Wissenschaftsfeldes hervorgebracht wird und wie sie einen Einsatz im Widerstreit epistemischer Modelle und intellektuellen Technologien bildet. Starting from this question the perspective is reversed and disciplinarity itself is viewed as a discursive phenomenon. The paper develops the thesis that disciplinarity is produced in the discursive practices of the field of science, and examines how it is used in relation to epistemic models and intellectual technologies. A historical sketch of the genealogy of epistemologies shows the extent to which different ways of analysis stand in a discursive struggle for the objects of scientific research. ENGLISH The two-volume Discourse Studies. An Interdisciplinary Handbook (1269 pages) gives a systematic overview over the new field of Discourse Studies. The first volume presents national and international tendencies and questions in Discourse Studies. The second volume discusses important discourse analytical methods by applying them to the discourse on the neoliberal higher education reforms. With its focus on discourse analytical research practices, on theories and methods in an interdisciplinary context the Handbook, produced by the DiscourseNet group, addresses research-oriented students and all those working at the nexus of language and society. GERMAN Das zweibandige Handbuch zur interdisziplinaren Diskursforschung gibt einen systematischen und umfassenden Uberblick uber das neue Feld der Diskursforschung. Der erste Band versammelt nationale und internationale Tendenzen, Entwicklungen und Fragen der Diskursforschung. Der zweite Band stellt wichtige diskursanalytische Methoden am Beispiel des Diskurses uber die neoliberalen Hochschulreformen vor.
