Organizations and individuals are still identifying new and value-adding utilizations for generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) that offer great potential. Simultaneously, the introduction in organizations and private spheres is at a momentum in which promises and fears are communicated via various (informal) networks. Both lead to different attitudes towards GenAI. Given the passage of time and the ongoing progress, it is to be expected that the experimentation phase will follow a broad and structured deployment. Consequently, organizations must pay attention to suitable utilization scenarios and the attitudes of those potentially affected by GenAI to enable a successful deployment. Therefore, we surveyed utilization scenarios and attitudes towards GenAI. Building on this, we derived a structured overview of GenAI utilizations and identified four attitude (frame) patterns towards GenAI ranging from negative to enthusiastic. Our results contribute to explorative knowledge and can aid research and practice when dealing with human-centered GenAI utilization and deployment.

In today's rapidly evolving work and educational landscapes, understanding the impact of environmental settings on creativity is becoming increasingly important. As organizations adopt both digital and physical formats (e.g., workshops), identifying how these environments influence creative processes can significantly enhance innovation outcomes. Creativity, a cornerstone of innovation, thrives in diverse settings, each offering unique characteristics and challenges. This study explores the effects of digital and physical environments on human creativity, focusing on two iterations of a data thinking course in a higher education institution, one conducted entirely in person and the other fully digital. Using a methodological approach that included surveys, focus group interviews, observations, and analyses of creative outputs, we assessed the experiences of 28 interdisciplinary students across both iterations. By exploring ideation, collaboration dynamics, and data integration as individual indicators of creativity, we aimed to understand how these environments influence the creative process. Our findings reveal that physical environments can enhance creativity through immediate feedback, dynamic interactions, and spontaneous brainstorming, fostering deeper group cohesion and engagement. Conversely, digital environments offer flexibility, can save time, and avoid media discontinuity. Consequently, this study provides insights for organizations and moderators aiming to plan and design creative processes, underscoring the importance of tailoring approaches to the specific benefits and challenges of physical and digital environments.
Urban planning is a complex field that requires the integration of diverse skills, knowledge, and perspectives. Engaging the public in this process promises to achieve high acceptance for resulting endeavors but poses significant challenges, particularly due to the varying levels of technical and artistic skills among participants. Moreover, discussions and collaborative efforts in urban planning often lack practical visualization tools, making it difficult to imagine and debate future urban scenarios. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has emerged as a promising technology capable of bridging these gaps. GenAI can generate natural language output and visual content from textual descriptions, offering a novel way to facilitate more inclusive and productive participation in urban planning processes. In this paper, we explore the application of GenAI in a participatory urban planning event utilizing the novel Prompt-a-thon format. We conducted a study involving 64 participants who utilized GenAI in small groups to envision, design, and discuss the future urban landscape of the metropolitan city of Hamburg in Germany. Through this process, we examined the human-AI collaboration, assessing the technology's ability to accommodate varying skills and improve visualization in planning discussions. Our findings indicate that GenAI contributes to leveling diverse skill sets of participants, enabling more people to contribute insights into urban planning discussions. The technology also proved effective in overcoming visualization barriers, thus facilitating more engaging and fruitful discussions about future urban scenarios. These results underscore the potential of GenAI as a valuable tool in the evolving landscape of urban planning and public participation.
Over recent years, employee-driven innovation (EDI) has emerged as a prominent topic in both practical and academic circles. Particularly in economic-oriented organizations seeking growth, there is an increasing trend to involve “ordinary” employees—those whose primary responsibilities do not traditionally include innovation tasks—in the innovation process. These employees are tapped for their creativity and experience in the hope that they will generate innovative ideas beneficial to the organization. Consequently, EDI is increasingly acknowledged as a significant source of competitive edge, with employees often seen as initiating innovators that complement traditional channels, such as formal research and development departments. Despite the growing body of research in the interdisciplinary field of EDI and the interplay of multiple perspectives and effect areas, a comprehensive overview remains elusive. In this article, we conduct a systematic literature review to expose the vast effect areas of EDI, focusing on the micro (employee) and meso (organizational) levels. We identified four effect areas at the micro-level and seven at the mesolevel. Our research enhances the understanding of the multi-layered components of EDI and provides insights and implications for academics and practitioners aiming to harness its potential.
