Dromedary camel value chains present significant opportunities for attracting investors and reinvesting in rangeland restoration. Despite declining productivity and limited development of dromedary milk products, the sector remains crucial for its resilience in arid ecosystems and socioeconomic importance in the southern regions of Tunisia. The authors take a reflective approach to explore the potential of dromedary value chains in Tunisia. The study highlights the dual benefits of investing in these value chains, to drive economic development and environmental conservation, by employing a combination of desk review, key informant interviews (n = 11), and SWOT analysis. The sector assessment reveals statistical complexities and fluctuations in milk and meat production. Key informant interviews gathered insights from breeders, processors, traders, policymakers, and experts on challenges, opportunities, and feasibility of investment and rangeland restoration initiatives. The SWOT analysis identified internal strengths and weaknesses in the dromedary sector and external opportunities and threats. Recommendations include modernizing dromedary camel farming (settled, semi-intensive systems) and herding practices (nomadic and extensive pastoralism), transitioning to sustainable breeding and fattening, improving biosecurity and veterinary services, and enhancing feed management and genetic improvement. Strengthening value chains involves investing in processing infrastructure, marketing, product diversification, and structured milk collection networks. Integrated rangeland management includes cultivating fodder crops and protecting vegetation cover. Governance improvements through dromedary breeder associations, stakeholder engagement, and effective regulation are also crucial. Findings may inform policymakers, development agencies, financial institutions, and private investors about the dromedary sector’s potential in Tunisia, guide targeted interventions for growth and sustainability, and provide pathways to rangeland restoration. By addressing challenges and leveraging unique capabilities, dromedary value chains can drive economic development, environmental conservation, and social resilience in the region.
External shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in disruptions in the agri-food system. While there are multiple studies that have examined the effects of pandemic at the farm level, there is a dearth of studies that focus on food management at the household level, particularly the generation of food waste with the bulk of this coming from the households. This study investigates the configurations that can minimize food waste in homes during an external shock such as the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. Using configurational analysis through the fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) of 153 households, seven different configurations were found to potentially result in minimized household food waste. The findings highlight several socio-demographic traits, attitudes, and behavioral patterns of households in reducing food waste during extreme shocks. Among the different conditions considered in the configurational analysis, the higher number of employed household members is seen to be an important part of almost all configurations towards reduction of food waste. Home gardening is shown to have mixed results in households with more employed members. Non-practice of home gardening is not always detrimental to household food waste reduction. Based on these results, the initiatives that would yield the most impact are in the provision of livelihood and employment to more household members. Overall, the results point to important implications for transitions toward sustainability and the circular economy.
Rural social enterprises are organizations that utilize market-oriented strategies to fulfill social objectives within regional and rural settings, particularly in addressing persistent issues like poverty and inequality. Their performance is inadequately researched in the rural context, particularly in developing countries where their contributions to overcoming intractable challenges are most needed. This study contributes to addressing these research gaps by developing a model for assessing internal critical success factors (CSFs) that influence social enterprise performance, and testing it in an empirical investigation of the influence of selected CSFs - entrepreneurial orientation, social salience and business planning on the performance of rural social enterprises. A survey of 521 Ugandan rural social enterprises provided data which was analysed using structural equation modelling and importance performance map analysis. Results reveal that entrepreneurial orientation and business planning are critical to rural social enterprises' performance, and that business planning mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance. For practitioners and policymakers, these findings suggest that entrepreneurial orientation, social salience, and business planning are critical to the performance of rural social enterprises. Further, findings support rural social enterprises' use of their entrepreneurial orientation to improve financial performance while also advocating for and increasing social performance. We advance social entrepreneurship research by employing the CSF concept in conjunction with other frameworks, and by developing and quantitatively validating a concise model consisting of internal CSFs based on measurement scales. We assess the psychometric properties of these scales and analyse their influence on the performance of rural social enterprises. These findings provide direction for rural social enterprise scholars, practitioners, advocates, and policymakers.
Many agri-food supply chains (SCs) are vulnerable to sudden disruptions (i.e., shocks), which can have devastating impacts. SC member firms’ digital capabilities (as routinized and integrated resource bundles) have the potential to address these challenges, yet their nature and differentiated impacts on engineering versus socio-ecological resilience are not well understood in the present literature. The purpose of this study is to address these gaps. First, a comprehensive taxonomy of five digital capabilities (labelled LogisticsTech, SecureData, ClientValue, InsightDecision, and InnovateTech) is developed, along with a set of nine resilience criteria/sub-criteria useful for resiliency evaluation. This was achieved through using a narrative literature review, a content analysis, validated by a Delphi study, and semi-structured interviews. Second, the relative impacts of these capabilities on resilience are assessed through pairwise comparison, network analysis, and system dynamics modelling across six Australian agri-food SCs (Grains, Red Meat, Dairy, Horticulture, Seafood, and Wine). The study findings reveal that Australian agri-food SC members’ digital capabilities play distinct but interconnected roles in enhancing resilience, with their impact varying across persistence (engineering), adaptation, and transformation (socio-ecological) over different time frames. LogisticsTech is crucial for short-term, while SecureData safeguards long-term persistence. Moreover, InsightDecision supports immediate adaptation, ClientValue facilitates long-term adaptation, and InnovateTech drives systemic transformation and future-ready SCs. The study offers strategic insights for managers and policymakers to align digital technology adoption with resilience objectives.
In developing countries the most marginalised and disadvantaged people are in rural, remote and regional areas and social enterprises in these areas - rural social enterprises (RSEs) - have been identified as key development actors in this context. However, their impacts are rarely rigorously measured. Our study fills this gap by measuring an RSE's social impact in a developing country. A smallholder farmers' survey (n = 1021) is utilised in a propensity score-based method which allowed us to generate counterfactual and estimate outcomes between members and non-members of an RSE. This method was complemented by a stakeholder focus group discussion. Predictors of participation and social impacts of the RSE are identified besides an evaluation of its interventions. Results generate implications for social enterprise practitioners, supporters and policymakers interested in applying RSEs as local and regional development actors as well as researchers involved in social impact measurement.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to guide commercial and policy action to improve smallholder Indonesian cattle systems. Design/methodology/approach A survey ( n = 304) of smallholder cattle farms in six villages in two districts of Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were employed to classify cattle farms into business models according to observed innovation. Differences between business models were identified using a one-way-analysis-of-variance (ANOVA). Findings Four business models were identified, representing profiles of innovation adoption and elements of business models, socio-economic characteristics, farming system and performance variables including revenue, cost and profit. The business models display a range of orientation to buyer requirements and a range of approaches to production, indicating a need to promote in a variety of ways the change from supply-push to demand-pull in the cattle value chain. Research limitations/implications This study offers guidance on how business models might be strengthened over time, by using simple indicators of performance and the models' linkage to innovation in the context of each business model. The business models developed here, and refinements to them based on localised conditions, offer a targeted and accelerated pathway to improved performance in smallholder systems. Originality/value This study proposed a novel approach to the recognition of business models based on innovation.
The role of agency in women’s empowerment, whether individual or collective, has long been at the center of feminist discourse. Although, highly context dependent, studies on agency are less contextualized. Based on mixed methods, we generated in-depth understandings of what constitutes agency in livestock-based institutions, and associated contextual factors across three regions. Agency, the ability to make effective participation, conceptualization is based on four main dimensions, in turn associated with key agency enabling resources. The agency-enabling resources such as years of schooling, land holding, sheep flock size, number of women in the leadership committee, along with location and distance to extension services variables were associated with the ability to effectively participate. Study participants are aware of the influence of normative environment but lack the power to challenge it. If supported and used as a means, the collective action, breeding cooperative, itself could potentially generate its members such power.
The COVID-19 pandemic had global reach and widespread effect, particularly concerning food security. As food supply chains become disrupted, food producers struggle to access markets. Thus, there is a need to examine the factors affecting the food security of agri-food system actors, particularly smallholder farmers in the Philippines. Utilizing the eight-question survey module of the FAO's Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) and questions regarding their socio-demographic profile, 215 agri-food system actors including smallholder farmers, processors, logistic providers, and traders were surveyed from February to May 2021. An ordered probit regression was used to determine the factors affecting the severity of the food insecurity of agri-food system actors. Smallholder farmers, larger households, and Indigenous Peoples' groups experience an increase in food insecurity. Conversely, the determinants of reduced severity of food insecurity include other agri-food system actors, reporting profitability during the COVID-19 lockdown period, older age, being married, having more employed household members, and having savings. Results reflect farmers being among the severely impacted sectors during the pandemic. The findings shed light on several resilience and post-pandemic implications to sustainable development, such as designing resilient food systems by securing farmers' access to inputs and markets and improving their profitability. Furthermore, there is a need to transform current food systems into being more inclusive by targeting younger farmers, Indigenous Peoples' groups, and poor farmers having limited means to increase their financial capital to improve food security in rural communities. This study is the first empirical evidence documenting the extent of food insecurity among agri-food system actors during extreme shocks.
Context This study assesses the monetary value of product quality information, specifically feedback from slaughter and production methods, within the Australian beef and sheep meat supply chains. Aims The primary objective was to investigate the value assigned by supply chain actors to product quality information, measured as willingness to pay for receiving it or willingness to accept payment for providing it. The study also aimed to explore how the value of this information varies based on information quality and quantity. Methods A contingent valuation approach was employed, utilising survey data from 104 producers. Logit models were used to identify the factors influencing meat producers’ willingness to accept payment and willingness to pay. Key results Over one-third of cattle and sheep producers expressed interest in receiving feedback from slaughter information and providing production methods information. Production methods information had the highest mean value at the premium information quality and quantity level, with values of AU$20.49/head in the beef industry and AU$10.13/head in the sheep industry. Conversely, feedback from slaughter information had the lowest mean value at the low information quality and quantity level, with values of AU$0.83/carcass in beef and AU$0.14/carcass in sheep. Farmers’ experience and education level significantly influenced their willingness to accept payment and willingness to pay for product quality information. Conclusions A significant proportion of producers within the Australian beef and sheep meat supply chains express a desire to provide or pay for product quality information. The value assigned to this information demonstrates a positive relationship with higher information quality and quantity. However, variations in expressed value of different information types, and the influence of farmer and farm characteristics, suggest the presence of chain failures that disrupt information valuation. Implications These findings have important implications for improving the performance of the red meat supply chains. Understanding the factors that influence the valuation of product quality information allows stakeholders to develop targeted strategies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of information exchange. This may involve addressing chain failures, and implementing measures to ensure consistent and accurate valuation of information. Ultimately, these improvements can contribute to enhanced decision-making processes and overall supply chain performance in the Australian beef and sheep meat industry.
The Ethiopian commodity exchange market (ECX) was launched in 2008, and since then it has rolled out warehouse services for various commodities in different markets. In this study, our objective is to examine the effect of ECX's warehouse services on spatial and intra-temporal integration of agricultural markets. To this effect, we apply the difference-in-difference approach on monthly retail price collected from sample markets. The results show that the warehouse service provision is associated with improved spatial market integration for chickpea and haricot bean, but not in the case of soya bean, sesame, and coffee. The results further show the warehouse service has no statistically significant impact on intra-temporal market integration except for sesame. The implications of the study results are discussed. Households are among the greatest contributors to food waste generation, particularly in fresh fruit and vegetables. From a policy perspective, reductions in household food waste are generally perceived to generate positive outcomes; however, the economic impacts are transmitted throughout the food value chain. In this paper, an Equilibrium Displacement Model (EDM) of the Australian apple industry is used to demonstrate the potential changes in economic welfare among apple industry participants from a reduction in household demand for food waste. Overall, there is an industry loss of economic surplus with apple growers, wholesalers, processors, and retailers who are adversely impacted. Domestic consumers potentially gain from increased food security at lower prices; however, the direction and magnitude of the change in consumer welfare are ambiguous and dependent on the treatment of consumer surplus on food waste in economic surplus calculations. This ambiguity likely has implications for current policies to combat food waste. The distributional impacts of changes in economic welfare among industry stakeholders emphasise the need for a collaborative approach to the food waste problem.
In a world impacted by disruptive events, the importance of incorporating resilience into supply chain design has become paramount. Especially, the risks associated with food supply chains can cause severe consequences directly impacting the health and well-being of societies. Though the Australian food supply chains are notably efficient and profitable, they can no longer narrowly focus on the conventional "triangle" of time, cost, and quality. Rather, they need to consider an additional, new triangle of design attributes: resilience, sustainability, and trust to assure food accessibility and availability during unprecedented events. This chapter aims to analyze different types of risks (health, natural disasters, drought, geopolitics, and technology) threatening Australian food commodities (grain, horticulture, dairy, red meat, seafood, and wine) and explore the potential role of digital technologies as enablers of resiliency in food supply chain.
IntroductionDespite growing interest in gender analysis in value chains, comparatively few studies have analyzed gender relations in small ruminant value chains using sex-disaggregated quantitative data in livestock-based systems. MethodsDrawing on baseline data from the Small Ruminant Value Chain Development Program (SRVD) in Ethiopia, this study aims to address two research questions: what is the gender status along small ruminant value chain stages and the related associations among aspects of empowerment and socio-economic variables? We employed empowerment and value chain frameworks to address these research questions. Results and conclusionOur findings reveal that small ruminant market participation, related decisions, and control over income are gender differential. Estimation results identified several variables significantly associated with agency dimensions, achievements, or both, with mixed results. These are age group, context, being married, being men and head of household, participation in breeding stock selection, livestock ownership, contact with extension agents, access to market information, and participation in selling at marketplaces. Participation in a small ruminant value chain may encourage more egalitarian decision-making behaviors but does not guarantee the capacity to make autonomous decision-making, and thus needs to be coupled with interventions on empowerment dimensions. Nevertheless, further investigations are required to establish the mixed results with additional variables on norms.
IntroductionThis study is a review of secondary literature that has been synthesized to extract information and demonstrate the implementation and impact of community conversations (CCs) on gender aspects of social norms in livestock-based systems in Ethiopia.MethodsThe study used the phenomenological method of qualitative literature review to sketch the gender transformative approach to the delivery of knowledge products in a program on transforming the small ruminant value chain. The CC aimed at addressing gender-related norms in the division of labor, resource ownership, and handling practices of animals and their products previously identified, and those that emerged during the CC events across the study sites. A total of 1,517 community members (out of which 574 are women) took part in various CC events.Results and discussionThe review shows that the gender-related norms addressed were in line with the identified constraining norms faced by women livestock keepers in the mixed and livestock-based systems. The CC approach adopted complied with the stages laid out in literature: identification of existing knowledge; imparting new knowledge; knowledge integration and application; and review, reflection, and re-planning. The process was inclusive and community-engaging, which possibly cultivated intrinsic motivation and ownership of the process. Changes in knowledge, attitudes, and practices at household, community, and institutional levels were identified. The conclusions include institutionalizing the gender transformative approach in the public agricultural extension system. This could be facilitated by the generation of robust objective evidence of impacts and guidance for subsequent scaling at local, regional, and national levels.
Rural social enterprises (RSEs) represent an emerging actor in rural and local socio-economic development. The study of RSEs recognizes the importance of place-based actions for development. Social impacts of RSEs have been touted, particularly in filling roles in the rural context that are underperformed by governments and private actors. However, RSEs' social impact measurement remains emerging. This review confirms that measurement of RSEs' social impact, and its attribution to RSEs' interventions, remain underdeveloped and lacking in both rigour and consistency. Solutions are proposed that contribute to improved methodological approaches applicable to rural regions and appropriate for related interventions confronting spatial disparities in rural development.
Rural social enterprises (RSEs) are an emerging actor that applies market-based approaches to implement a social mission: steering social and economic development. They thus contribute to addressing intractable challenges such as poverty and inequality disproportionately faced in rural areas. However, there is limited empirical evidence of their performance particularly regarding critical success factors (CSFs) and their interdependencies in influencing RSE performance in developing countries’ rural contexts. Our study aims to contribute to closing this gap by examining the interrelationships between internal (e.g., business planning) and external (e.g., financial and training supports) critical success factors (CSFs), and the performance of RSEs. The study uses survey data from 521 rural Ugandan RSEs, which is analysed using structural equation modelling and importance performance map analysis. Results show business planning and training support as key influencing CSFs for improving RSE performance. These results offer guidance for improving RSE performance to Ugandan RSE practitioners, supporters and policymakers as well as those in related developing country rural context. The study also provides initial findings valuable to researchers interested in advancing RSE performance.
Introduction Efficiency in food production is crucial for sustainable agriculture in developing countries. This paper contributes to the existing literature by presenting an innovative approach to modeling productive efficiency in beef cattle production. Treating farm performance across regions as unobserved heterogeneity, we determine technical efficiency of beef cattle production in Botswana. We aim to shed light on the factors influencing efficiency in this sector. Methods The study utilized block-level data from various annual agricultural surveys (2006–2014) covering 26 agricultural districts and six agro-ecological regions in Botswana. We employed a latent class stochastic frontier model complemented with the stochastic meta-frontier analysis. Results Results show that the best performing farming systems in terms of efficiency are districts with well-developed infrastructure and better access to output and input markets. In contrast, the farming systems that perform poorly consist of agricultural districts without access to livestock advisory centers, with higher average temperatures and foot and mouth disease, limiting access to export markets. The mean technical efficiency scores for beef production for agricultural districts in class one and two were 62 and 59%, respectively, implying high potential to improve beef production using the same level of agricultural inputs through efficiency-enhancing investments. Discussion Based on our results, it is crucial for agricultural policies to prioritize regionally specific investments that address the needs of the under-performing districts. By targeting the lagging districts, policymakers can help beef producers improve their input efficiency and bridge the technological gaps to the meta-frontier. This can be achieved through investments in infrastructure, access to livestock advisory services, and disease control measures. Such efforts will not only enhance the efficiency of beef production but also contribute to the overall sustainability of the agricultural sector in Botswana.
Background Women's empowerment constitutes an important aspect of the development agenda. Although it is highly contextual in nature, empowerment literature so far has focussed on identifying factors associated with empowerment, neglecting the importance of understanding which empowerment resources and agency dimensions are more important for whom and under what contexts. This is important, because we cannot talk of empowerment for those who are not in a disempowered condition or who do not value it. We examine the gender differences in the relative valuations of empowerment resources and decision-making areas across different farming systems, and examine the most valued empowerment resources. Methods Using a mixed methods approach, data on major household decisions, empowerment resources, and their relative importance were collected. Pairwise ranking methods were used to assess their gendered relative importance. Individual interviews using Ryff’s psychological well-being (PWB) items were conducted to obtain quantitative data on the key empowerment resource, which emerged as an important aspect of empowerment from the pairwise ranking exercises. Drawing on the empowerment framework and self-determination theory, we analysed the data. Results Our results show that the major empowerment resources and decision-makings that are valuable to men and women vary across gender and farming systems. In general, men place a greater importance on decisions about livestock, crop and finances. The women valued decisions regarding crop, livestock and social relations. Regarding empowerment resources, psychological well-being was found to be one of the most important resources, for women as well as men. Assessment of the basic psychological needs―autonomy, self-acceptance, and positive relations―statistically yielded no significant differences between the gender groups. However, the effects of location and the intersection of location with gender were both found to be statistically significant, suggesting that being men and from Horo is associated with higher scores on self-acceptance and personal relation subscales. Conclusions We conclude that gender and location play important roles in forming contextual conditions for empowerment and agency implying that empowerment efforts need to consider both. More specifically, policies and intervention efforts to empower individuals or groups must begin by first building their psychological assets and consider contextual gendered perceptions of resources.
