Inelastic scattering of 340 MeV and 480 MeV α-particles has been measured on 58Ni, 116Sn and 208Pb up to 60 MeV excitation energy. Consistent background subtraction and multipole analysis has provided the repartition of multipole strength for all three nuclei. The so-obtained response functions show the already known low-energy giant resonances in a detailed way, as well as new giant resonances at high energy.
The conventional approach to composite fragment production in heavy ion collisions from a single gaseous phase may require modification at temperatures below 20 MeV due to the onset of a liquid-gas phase instability. Clusters heavier than the α-particle are necessary for an unambigous experimental signature.
Measurements of light charged particle spectra from 20Ne + Au at 100 and 156 MeV/nucleon are compared with results for similar systems at 9, 13, 19, 43, 241, 393, and 800 MeV/nucleon. Spectra at each energy are fitted with a moving source model to extract the temperatures, cross sections and source velocities for protons and light nuclei in the intermediate rapidity region. The 4He/p production ratio decreases drastically with incident energy, whereas the d/p and t/p ratios are almost constant.
The reaction /sup 26/Mg(/sup 12/C,/sup 12/B) /sup 26/Al (5+,3+) has been studied using a beam of 102 MeV of /sup 12/C. Shell-model, microscopic direct model and coupled reaction channels calculations have been performed, for comparison with the experimental data.
The parallel- and transverse-momentum distributions have been measured for fragments of $Z>~3$ produced by the fragmentation of $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ at 90 and 120 MeV/nucleon. A strong anisotropy is observed with ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{p\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}200$ MeV/c for all fragments, which can be explained by considering the dispersion due to orbital deflection of the projectile prior to breakup.
The reactions $^{148}\mathrm{Sm}$($^{18}\mathrm{O}$ \ensuremath{\leftrightarrow} $^{16}\mathrm{O}$) $^{150}\mathrm{Sm}$ and $^{150}\mathrm{Sm}$ ($^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{14}\mathrm{C}$) $^{148}\mathrm{Sm}$ have been performed as part of a heavy-ion study of the transitional samarium region. The angular distributions for the ground-state transitions have a typical bell shape. While the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ angular distribution is bell shaped in the stripping reaction, it is flat with an interference minimum in both pickup reactions. The striking difference between the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ angular distributions is not explained satisfactorily by current theories.
The ($^{4}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{He}$) and ($^{3}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{Li}$) reactions have been employed at detection angles near 8\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} on gas targets of $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ and $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ to produce and measure the masses of the nuclei $^{16}\mathrm{Ne}$, $^{15}\mathrm{F}$, and $^{12}\mathrm{O}$. The ($^{4}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{He}$) reactions were performed at an incident energy of 117 MeV and the ($^{3}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{Li}$) reaction at 88 and 75 MeV. The mass excesses of $^{16}\mathrm{Ne}$, $^{15}\mathrm{F}$, and $^{12}\mathrm{O}$ were determined to be 23.92\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08, 16.67\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18, and 32.10\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12 MeV, respectively. Estimated ground state decay widths were ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}=0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1, 0.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3, \mathrm{and} 0.40\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.25$ MeV, for $^{16}\mathrm{Ne}$, $^{15}\mathrm{F}$, and $^{12}\mathrm{O}$, respectively. A $d$ coefficient of 8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5 keV is indicated for the isobaric multiplet mass equation description of the mass 16 multiplet. Consideration of the possible decay mechanisms of $^{16}\mathrm{Ne}$ and $^{12}\mathrm{O}$ indicates that both nuclei probably have an appreciable diproton decay width.NUCLEAR REACTIONS $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$($^{4}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{He}$), $^{16}\mathrm{O}$($^{4}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{He}$), $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$($^{3}\mathrm{He}$, $^{8}\mathrm{Li}$). Measured reaction $Q$ values, ground state ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}$ deduced mass excesses. Deduced coefficients for IMME. Discuss diproton decay widths.
The elastic scattering and one-proton transfer reactions induced by 312.6-MeV $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ ions on $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ are investigated and compared with data at lower incident energies. A conventional distorted-wave Born approximation analysis can account for the qualitative features of the energy spectra but overestimates the energy dependence of the observed absolute cross sections by almost an order of magnitude between 140 and 312.6 MeV.
