The transition to the practice period presents challenges for both new graduates and their employers. Mentorship can support veterinary students’ preparation for their career and improve their transition to practice. To actively and productively engage in mentoring, veterinary colleges can prepare students to develop their skills as mentees. The Western College of Veterinary Medicine developed a pilot mentee skills training program, woven through students’ 4-year professional education. The curriculum emphasizes self-directed learning skills and competencies essential for lifelong learning. The pilot curriculum, with learning tools, is presented here.
A new veterinarian’s smooth and rapid transition from education to clinical practice is critical to their success and that of their new professional homes. Successful mentoring relationships are critical to smoothing the transition to practice, particularly when independent clinical decisions are abruptly required. A mentor acts as a personal coach and teacher, providing both career and personal guidance. While the profession has focused on training mentors, it has paid little attention to teaching mentees how to maximize the benefits of the relationship. Veterinary colleges can do more to equip their graduates with the skills they need to manage their change to working life successfully. The Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s (WCVM) substantive gap analysis revealed mentee training as an important issue to address in support of mentorship and established a mentee training program within the curriculum. The program teaches needs assessment, goal setting, identification of appropriate learning activities, and reflection skills as an iterative and cyclical process. Learning activities include working with one’s selected mentor (or mentors). These skills are important for lifelong learning and continuing professional development, as well as transition to practice.
Six patient education tools were designed to guide patients' self-care by activating pets to positively impact social determinants of health. Distributed to both pet owners and primary health-care providers, each tool addressed a specific area of health and outlined a pet-related activity. Surveys questioned how participants used the tools and their impact on health and health care. Pet owners shared the tools with family and friends. Primary health-care providers used the tools to target specific health concerns. Primary health-care providers reported that working with the tools improved rapport with their patients.
Competency in One Health (OH) leadership was emphasized in the Roadmap for Veterinary Medical Education in the 21st Century in 2011. Since then, several educational interventions have been aimed at increasing awareness and capacity for inter-professional collaboration. At the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, a 3-day event, the One Health Leadership Experience (OHLE), was initiated in 2012 and continues to the present. The event targets students entering their first year of a health professional program and consists of presentations by invited OH guest speakers, networking sessions, small-group case discussions of OH scenarios, and leadership development through panel discussions and interactive small-group dialogues. Post-conference surveys, a 5-year follow-up survey, and two focus groups were conducted to evaluate the impact of participation in the OHLE. After the event, the proportion of students who said they clearly understood OH and its goals was substantially higher than before: 86% versus 14% in 2012, 91% versus 23% in 2013, and 69% versus 24% in 2014. In the 5-year follow-up survey, most respondents (90%) indicated that attending the OHLE increased their interaction with other students from health sciences colleges or schools on campus. Also, most (81%) believed that OH should be formally taught in their program and 80% anticipated implementing, or had already implemented, OH practices after graduation. The OHLE increased participants’ awareness of the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and is a successful educational model that can be adapted to health professional curricula at other institutions.
This research explored whether asking patients about their pets would enable better environmental/social history taking, and improve patient communication/care. Primary health care providers (PHPs) were surveyed about prevalence of patients living with pets, the health impact of pets, and influences on patient communication. Following an educational intervention, they committed to asking patients about their pets. A follow-up survey was conducted electronically. PHPs were recruited at a continuing medical education (CME) conference and at CME workshops. All 225 participants were PHPs. At the conference, participants were educated one-on-one about the clinical relevance of pets in the family. CME sessions were large or small group teaching. Baseline and final surveys measured awareness of pets in patients’ families, assessment of determinants of health, impact on rapport with patients, and patient care. A sign test assessed difference in scores using repeated-measures analysis. Binomial outcomes were assessed using Fisher’s exact test. Comments were themed. Ninety-four PHPs (42%) completed the study. Pet-related discussions opened communication with patients. Two-thirds of participants identified positive effects on practice and on relationships with patients. PHPs were able to leverage the health benefits of pets (zooeyia) and mitigate zoonotic risk. Asking patients about pets in the family reveals clinically relevant information, improves communication, and strengthens the therapeutic alliance.
