An X-ray study of the adduct formed by hexakis (p-t-butylphenylthiomethyl)benzene (I) with squalene (II) establishes the first example of channel-type inclusion behaviour for a hexahost molecule, the guest triterpene (II) being observed in a novel conformation controlled by host-guest interactions.
The synthesis of the first chiral hexa-host molecule (III) is described: an X-ray analysis of the acetic acid adduct of (III) allows the first direct observation of dimeric acetic acid.
In contrast to the six-fold substitution of hexakis(bromomethyl)benzene (Ia) by aniline to give the hexa-amine (Ib), reaction of (Ia) with morpholine occurs with dispiro-annelation yielding (II); the structure of this novel product was deduced spectroscopically and its detailed molecular geometry was determined by X-ray crystallography.
An X-ray diffraction analysis of the CCl4 clathrate of the mercapto-host (II) is described; a key feature of the host structure is the linking of the SH groups of six molecules of (II) by SH ⋯ S hydrogen bonds, such that the sulphur atoms form a near-planar hexagon.
WE recently suggested1, and found experimental support for1,2, a totally new concept for the design of inclusion compounds. Using this design concept we prepared a series of host compounds based on a hexa-substituted benzene ring (I), and we now report the results of the first X-ray structural study on one of these compounds.
