Since 1997, 58 single point and 21 light-sensing pop-up archival satellite tags (Microwave Telemetry, Inc., Columbia, MD) were deployed on giant bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) (178-266 cm SFL) in the western north Atlantic The goals of the initial deployments were to test external tag attachments and the tags themselves, which evolved to include greater data logging capacity, additional sensors, and increased power. All of the tags were deployed on fish from New England and Canadian commercial or charter fishing vessels (harpoon, rod and reel, trap, and purse seine) using tag attachment techniques developed by the U.S. fishermen (Murray, Chaprales, Mendillo, and Genovese). Attachment periods ranged from 5 365 days, although the majority of tags detached from the fish over the presumed spawning period (April July). Tag reporting success rates were 59% for single point tags and 79% (15 out of 19 due) for the archival tags. Three tags (shed from large fish in Canada) reported from land. Without exception, results from 1997-2000 tagging showed that all tagged fish were in the central Atlantic when their tags reported, and 30-58 % annually were in the eastern management area. Our high tag reporting success rates is attributed to the experience of fishermen tagging partners, appropriate handling of the bluefin tuna during capture and tagging, careful tag placement, and proper storage and handling of the satellite tags. Data capable of depicting full migration paths and environmental associations (80 270 days) of ten fish (193-266 cm) are now available. Data successfully returned from the archival tags will generate geolocation estimates and errors associated with light-derived data. In 2000, the deployment of pop-up archival tags for 365-500 day attachments is planned.
This paper discusses the empirical development and use of a fuzzy linguistic data base which is relational in character. Unlike conventional fuzzy searches for crisp data, we search a data base for fuzzy information. The data base supports another code which does fuzzy aggregation of data. It has been applied to support decision making connected with the construction of military budgets for command, control and communications (C3).
Structural family therapy, psychodynamic child therapy, and a recreational control condition were compared for 69 six-to-twelve-year-old Hispanic boys who presented with behavioral and emotional problems. The results suggest that the control condition was significantly less effective in retaining cases than the two treatment conditions, which were apparently equivalent in reducing behavioral and emotional problems as well as in improving psychodynamic ratings of child functioning. Structural family therapy was more effective than psychodynamic child therapy in protecting the integrity of the family at 1-year follow-up. Finally, the results did not support basic assumptions of structural family systems therapy regarding the mechanisms mediating symptom reduction.
Mitoxantrone, 1,4-dihydroxy-5,8-bis(((2-[(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]ethyl) amino))-9,10-anthra-cenedione dihydrochloride, a new antitumor agent was evaluated in nine cancer patients as part of a phase I trial. In general, the drug was well tolerated. Leukopenia was the dose-limiting toxic effect. Mild to moderate leukopenia (but not neutropenia or thrombocytopenia) occurred in four of six patients given 4 mg/m2/week after a mean of 2.75 doses (range, 2–4 doses) and in all three patients given 5 mg/m2/week after three doses. Only one patient had mild nausea and vomiting. No patient experienced alopecia or mucositis, and none showed evidence of any cardiac, renal, hepatic, or pulmonary abnormality. Mitoxantrone treatment induced two partial remissions (patients with metastatic squamous cell carcinomas of the hypopharynx and rectum) and one mixed response (patient with gastric carcinoma). For phase II studies the starting dose, when used on a weekly schedule, should be 5 mg/m2 in patients who are known to have adequate bone marrow reserve.
We give statistical evidence that specific rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic analyses are dominating shaping structures for the agogical streams from 28 performances of Schumann's “Träumerei”, as measured by Repp [1]. These analyses are provided by the Rubato analysis and performance workstation. The statistical model is based on regression analysis and realizes shaping of agogics by a second-order linear differential operator. More precisely, the logarithm of the tempo function T(E) at onset time E can be expressed as a linear function of a sequence of particular smooth “weight” functions Wi(E) and their first and second derivatives. These numerical functions are generated by Rubato's harmonic, melodic, and rhythmical analyses and include an averaging process over a natural grouping hierarchy defined by Schumann's score.
