Based on previous experience and attempt, a real-size mosaic Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) has been developed within the framework of the CMS muon upgrade efforts. The chamber is a 5-gap with plates made each of 6 pieces of low resistive glass. Cosmic ray test at CERN 904 shows that its efficiency can reach above 95% with a gas mixture of 90% C2H2F4, 5% i-C4H10 and 5% SF6. The chamber was also tested with CMS dry gas(95.2% C2H2F4, 4.5% i-C4H10, 0.3% SF6) at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++). Efficiency results calculated by a simple tracking method show that the good performance is maintained at rates up to 10 kHz/cm2.
Triple-GEM detector technology was recently selected by CMS for a part of the upgrade of its forward muon detector system as GEM detectors provide a stable operation in the high radiation environment expected during the future High-Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). In a first step, GEM chambers (detectors) will be installed in the innermost muon endcap station in the 1.6<|η|<2.2 pseudo-rapidity region, mainly to control level-1 muon trigger rates after the second LHC Long Shutdown. These new chambers will add redundancy to the muon system in the η-region where the background rates are high, and the bending of the muon trajectories due to the CMS magnetic field is small. A novel construction technique for such chambers has been developed in such a way where foils are mounted onto a single stack and then uniformly stretched mechanically, avoiding the use of spacers and glue inside the active gas volume. We describe the layout, the stretching mechanism and the overall assembly technique of such GEM chambers.
A search has been performed for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW in 2 ℓ 2q final states, with two charged leptons ( ℓ = e , μ ) produced by the decay of a Z boson, and two quarks produced by the decay of a W or Z boson. The analysis is sensitive to resonances with masses in the range from 400 to 4500 GeV. Two categories are defined based on the merged or resolved reconstruction of the hadronically decaying vector boson, optimized for high- and low-mass resonances, respectively. The search is based on data collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of √(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 . No excess is observed in the data above the standard model background expectation. Upper limits on the production cross section of heavy, narrow spin-1 and spin-2 resonances are derived as a function of the resonance mass, and exclusion limits on the production of W ′ bosons and bulk graviton particles are calculated in the framework of the heavy vector triplet model and warped extra dimensions, respectively.
A search for new physics using events containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets arising from initial-state radiation or the hadronic decay of W or Z bosons is presented. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, is used. The observed data are found to be in agreement with the expectation from standard model processes. The results are interpreted as limits on the dark matter production cross section in simplified models with vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar mediators. Interpretations in the context of fermion portal and nonthermal dark matter models are also provided. In addition, the results are interpreted in terms of invisible decays of the Higgs boson and set stringent limits on the fundamental Planck scale in the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali model with large extra spatial dimensions.
Measurements are presented of the lifetimes of the B 0 , B s 0 , Λ b 0 , and B c + hadrons using the decay channels B 0 → J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 , B 0 → J / ψ K S 0 , B s 0 → J / ψ π + π - , B s 0 → J / ψ ϕ ( 1020 ) , Λ b 0 → J / ψ Λ 0 , and B c + → J / ψ π + . The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb -1 , was collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 TeV . The B 0 lifetime is measured to be 453.0 ± 1.6 (stat) ± 1.8 (syst) μ m in J / ψ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 and 457.8 ± 2.7 (stat) ± 2.8 (syst) μ m in J / ψ K S 0 , which results in a combined measurement of c τ B 0 = 454.1 ± 1.4 (stat) ± 1.7 (syst) μ m . The effective lifetime of the B s 0 meson is measured in two decay modes, with contributions from different amounts of the heavy and light eigenstates. This results in two different measured lifetimes: c τ B s 0 → J / ψ π + π - = 502.7 ± 10.2 (stat) ± 3.4 (syst) μ m and c τ B s 0 → J / ψ ϕ ( 1020 ) = 443.9 ± 2.0 (stat) ± 1.5 (syst) μ m . The Λ b 0 lifetime is found to be 442.9 ± 8.2 (stat) ± 2.8 (syst) μ m . The precision from each of these channels is as good as or better than previous measurements. The B c + lifetime, measured with respect to the B + to reduce the systematic uncertainty, is 162.3 ± 7.8 (stat) ± 4.2 (syst) ± 0.1 ( τ B + ) μ m . All results are in agreement with current world-average values.
Events with no charged particles produced between the two leading jets are studied in proton-proton collisions at . The jets were required to have transverse momentum and pseudorapidity , and to have values of with opposite signs. The data used for this study were collected with the CMS detector during low-luminosity running at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 8. Events with no charged particles with in the interval between the jets are observed in excess of calculations that assume no color-singlet exchange. The fraction of events with such a rapidity gap, amounting to 0.5–1% of the selected dijet sample, is measured as a function of the of the second-leading jet and of the rapidity separation between the jets. The data are compared to previous measurements at the Tevatron, and to perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations based on the Balitsky–Fadin–Kuraev–Lipatov evolution equations, including different models of the non-perturbative gap survival probability.
A search for new physics in events with a Z boson produced in association with large missing transverse momentum at the LHC is presented. The search is based on the 2016 data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS experiment at s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb - 1 . The results of this search are interpreted in terms of a simplified model of dark matter production via spin-0 or spin-1 mediators, a scenario with a standard-model-like Higgs boson produced in association with the Z boson and decaying invisibly, a model of unparticle production, and a model with large extra spatial dimensions. No significant deviations from the background expectations are found, and limits are set on relevant model parameters, significantly extending the results previously achieved in this channel.
A search for standard model production of four top quarks ( t t ¯ t t ¯ ) is reported using events containing at least three leptons ( e , μ ) or a same-sign lepton pair. The events are produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, and the data sample, recorded in 2016, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb - 1 . Jet multiplicity and flavor are used to enhance signal sensitivity, and dedicated control regions are used to constrain the dominant backgrounds. The observed and expected signal significances are, respectively, 1.6 and 1.0 standard deviations, and the t t ¯ t t ¯ cross section is measured to be 16 . 9 - 11.4 + 13.8 fb , in agreement with next-to-leading-order standard model predictions. These results are also used to constrain the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson to be less than 2.1 times its expected standard model value at 95% confidence level.
Four-lepton production in proton-proton collisions, , where or , is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9. The ZZ production cross section, , measured using events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region , is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are measured and are well described by the theoretical predictions. The Z boson branching fraction to four leptons is measured to be for events with a four-lepton invariant mass in the range and a dilepton mass for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results agree with standard model predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ couplings at 95% confidence level: , , , .

The nuclear modification factors of J / ψ and ψ (2S) mesons are measured in PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV . The analysis is based on PbPb and p p data samples collected by CMS at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 464 μ b - 1 and 28 pb -1 , respectively. The measurements are performed in the dimuon rapidity range of | y | 2.4 as a function of centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum ( p T ) from p T = 3 GeV / c in the most forward region and up to 50 GeV / c . Both prompt and nonprompt (coming from b hadron decays) J / ψ mesons are observed to be increasingly suppressed with centrality, with a magnitude similar to the one observed at s NN = 2.76 TeV for the two J / ψ meson components. No dependence on rapidity is observed for either prompt or nonprompt J / ψ mesons. An indication of a lower prompt J / ψ meson suppression at p T \u003e 25 GeV / c is seen with respect to that observed at intermediate p T . The prompt ψ (2S) meson yield is found to be more suppressed than that of the prompt J / ψ mesons in the entire p T range.
Abstract A search for heavy resonances decaying to a pair of Z bosons is performed using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons), consistent with the decay of a Z boson, and large missing transverse momentum, which is interpreted as arising from the decay of a second Z boson to two neutrinos. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The hypothesis of a spin-2 bulk graviton (X) decaying to a pair of Z bosons is examined for 600 ≤ m X ≤ 2500 GeV and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction of X → ZZ ranging from 100 to 4 fb. For bulk graviton models characterized by a curvature scale parameter $$ \tilde{k}=0.5 $$ k ˜ = 0.5 in the extra dimension, the region m X < 800 GeV is excluded, providing the most stringent limit reported to date. Variations of the model considering the possibility of a wide resonance produced exclusively via gluon-gluon fusion or $$ \mathrm{q}\overline{\mathrm{q}} $$ q q ¯ annihilation are also examined.

Two categories are defined based on the merged or resolved reconstruction of the hadronically decaying vector boson, optimized for high- and low-mass resonances, respectively. The search is based on data collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb^(−1). No excess is observed in the data above the standard model background expectation. A search for pair production of heavy scalar leptoquarks (LQs), each decaying into a top quark and a lepton, is presented. The search considers final states with an electron or a muon, one or two leptons that decayed to hadrons, and additional jets. The data were collected in 2016 in proton–proton collisions at with the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9. No evidence for pair production of LQs is found. Assuming a branching fraction of unity for the decay , upper limits on the production cross section are set as a function of LQ mass, excluding masses below 900 at 95% confidence level. These results provide the most stringent limits to date on the production of scalar LQs that decay to a top quark and a lepton.
Results are presented from a search in the dijet final state for new massive narrow resonances decaying to pairs of W and Z bosons or to a W/Z boson and a quark. Results are based on data recorded in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The mass range investigated extends upwards from 1.2 TeV. No excess is observed above the estimated standard model background and limits are set at 95% confidence level on cross sections, which are interpreted in terms of various models that predict gravitons, heavy spin-1 bosons, and excited quarks. In a heavy vector triplet model, W′ and Z′ resonances, with masses below 3.2 and 2.7 TeV, respectively, and spin-1 resonances with degenerate masses below 3.8 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. In the case of a singlet W′ resonance masses between 3.3 and 3.6 TeV can be excluded additionally. Similarly, excited quark resonances, q∗, decaying to qW and qZ with masses less than 5.0 and 4.7 TeV, respectively, are excluded. In a narrow-width bulk graviton model, upper limits are set on cross sections ranging from 0.6 fb for high resonance masses above 3.6 TeV, to 36.0 fb for low resonance masses of 1.3 TeV.
