Replicated field experiments were conducted at three locations in North Carolina to study the disappearance of parathion from flue-cured tobacco. Immediately after application, parathion residues on green leaves, averaged over locations, were 51.0 and 78.8 ppm, respectively, for the 0.56 and 1.12 kg/ha rates. These residues dropped to 0.63 and 1.50 ppm for the two rates at five days after application. Parathion residues disappeared from green leaves most rapidly during the first 24 hr after application; the loss was over 95 percent in five days and over 99 percent at nine days after application. Residues of paraoxon on green leaves were highest one day after application when concentrations averaged 1.4 and 3.0 ppm for application rates of 0.56 and 1.12 kg/ha, respectively. Loss of total parathion residues during flue-curing ranged from 53 to 87 percent with an average of 72 percent.
Insecticides applied with a power sprayer to replicated field plots of flue-cured tobacco in 1968–72 were evaluated vs. artificial infestations of Heliothis virescens (F.) of similar insecticidal susceptibility. Significantly less control of budworm larvae and damage was obtained with methomyl in early 1970 than in 1968–69, 1971–72, and late 1970. In early 1970, methomyl provided 35 and 25% control of larvae and damage, respectively. In the other seasons, control of larvae and damage with methomyl averaged 82 and 72%, respectively. When tested in early 1970, carbaryl, endosulfan, monocrotophos, Supracide® (O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate, S-ester with 4-[mercaptomethyl]-2-methoxy-Δ2-1,3,4-thiadiazolin-5-one), TDE, and Thuricide HP® (Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner) also performed poorly vs. the tobacco budworm. The abnormally low insecticidal control obtained in early 1970 appeared to be related to low rainfall and low relative humidity. Observations suggest that the effects of low moisture on tobacco plants and budworm larvae reduced the effectiveness of insecticides.

In advanced field test during 1964–72, certain commercial formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner and a nuclear polyhedrosis virus of Heliothis zea (Boddie) were applied with a power sprayer to flue-cured tobacco at dosages suggested by the manufacturers for tobacco budworm, H. virescens (F.), control. The lower dosages of B. thuringiensis and the virus were usually as effective as the higher dosages, and addition of certain insecticidal and non-insecticidal products to B. thuringiensis spray did not increase its effectiveness. Thuricide®, Biotrol® BTB-183, and Dipel® brands of B. thuringiensis were usually as effective as 1.5 lb/acre of TDE or carbaryl and sometimes as effective as 0.5 lb of methomyl. Biotrol® VHZ and Viron® /H brands of the virus were usually less effective than TDE or methomyl. In a preliminary test, a noncommercial preparation of Nosema necatrix Kramer provided significant but less control than methomyl.
Field experiments conducted in North Carolina during 1961-65 to compare the residual effectiveness of insecticidal sprays against Epitrix hirtipennis (Melsheimer) on flue-cured tobacco showed that, for the number of days indicated after application, the following treatments provided control similar to that obtained with 1 lb per acre of DDT: (1) for 10 days. 0.5 lb of carbofuran, Dasanit®( O, O -dicthyl O -[ P -(methylsulfinyl) phenyl] phosphorotluoate), dinwthoate. Gardona® (2-chloro-1-(2-4,5-trichlorophenyl) vinyl dimethyl phosphate), Imidan® ( O, O- dimethyl S-phthalimidornethyl phosphorodithioate), and Supracide® (S-((2-methoxy-5-oxo-∆2-1,3,4-thiadiazolin-4-yl) methyl) O, O -dimethyl phosphorodithioate), and 1 lb of aminocarb and MCA-600 (benzo[b]thien-4-yl methylcarbamate), (2) for 6 days, 0.25 lb of azinphosmethyl. 0.5 lb of dicrotophos and phosphamidon, and 1 lb of carbaryl, and (3) for 3 days, 0.25 lb of parathion and 1 lb of carbanolate. One-fourth lb of methyl parathion, 0.5 lb of diazinon, endosulfan, malathion, and naled, and 1 lb of TDE provided control inferior to that of 1 lb of DDT for 3 days and no significant control thereafter. Variable control was obtained with monocrotophos.
