BACKGROUND:Although clinical trials are fundamental to advancing evidence-based practice, significant heterogeneity in outcome reporting poses a considerable challenge to the validity of systematic reviews. This inconsistency impedes the ability to compare, synthesise and interpret research findings effectively. In the field of paediatric airway management, this issue is particularly relevant because of the low incidence of critical events and the related high morbidity and mortality. The issue of inadequate and variable outcome reporting in clinical trials has been widely acknowledged, necessitating initiatives to enhance the quality of future research. OBJECTIVE:This protocol delineates the methodology used for the development of standardised, consensus-based outcome definitions and reporting items specifically tailored to paediatric airway management trials. The goal is to create guidance that will serve as an extension to the established SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) and CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) frameworks, leading to enhanced trial reproducibility and transparency and ultimately improve pediatric airway research, systematic reviews and advance patient care and safety. METHODS:This project will adhere to the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) Network's framework for guideline development. The methodology will be structured into four distinct phases: (1) a scoping review to comprehensively identify outcomes and variables currently reported in paediatric airway management trials; (2) a three-round Delphi process involving a multidisciplinary panel of experts to prioritise and refine outcomes and variables; (3) a consensus meeting to achieve agreement on the final set of reporting items, which will then be prepared for publication and (4) dissemination. CONCLUSIONS:The finalised outcome reporting guidelines, in the form of SPIRIT and CONSORT extensions for paediatric airway management, will be disseminated through various channels to maximise their reach and impact. These include publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentation at major international conferences and submission to relevant international reporting registries, such as the EQUATOR, SPIRIT and CONSORT registries. Active engagement with key stakeholders, including journal editors, research funders, regulatory bodies and clinician networks and national and international societies, will be a crucial component of the dissemination strategy.
INTRODUCTION:Flexible bronchoscopy is the gold standard for difficult airway management. Clinicians are using videolaryngoscopy increasingly because it is perceived to be easier to use with high success rates. We conducted this study to compare the success rates of the two techniques when used after failed direct laryngoscopy in children with difficult tracheal intubations. METHODS:We identified cases where initial attempts at direct laryngoscopy failed in the multicentre Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry from August 2012-September 2023. After propensity score matching, we compared success rates and complications when videolaryngoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy were used as rescue techniques in the matched cohort and in matched patients weighing < 5 kg. RESULTS:Clinicians chose videolaryngoscopy more frequently than flexible bronchoscopy when direct laryngoscopy failed (64.7%, 1426/2281 vs. 7.3%, 156/2281, p < 0.001). Propensity score matched cohorts did not differ with respect to first-attempt success, eventual success and complications. For the subgroup of infants < 5 kg, clinicians chose videolaryngoscopy more frequently than flexible bronchoscopy to rescue failed direct laryngoscopy (54.3%, 295/543 vs. 8.9%, 44/543, p < 0.001). First-attempt success was 43% (62/145) with videolaryngoscopy and 62% (18/29) with flexible bronchoscopy (odds ratio 2.19, 95%CI 0.96-4.98, p = 0.061). Eventual success was 71% (103/145) with videolaryngoscopy and 90% (26/29) with flexible bronchoscopy (odds ratio 3.53, 95%CI 1.03-12.2, p = 0.046). Complications did not differ between the techniques. DISCUSSION:Videolaryngoscopy was chosen more frequently than flexible bronchoscopy as a rescue technique in a cohort of children with difficult direct laryngoscopy, with similar success and complication rates. For small infants, flexible bronchoscopy had a higher eventual success rate, underscoring the importance of maintaining proficiency with flexible bronchoscopy.

BACKGROUND:Small case series have described awake supraglottic airway placement in infants with significant airway obstruction and difficult intubations. We conducted this study to determine outcomes when supraglottic airways were placed in awake children enrolled in the international Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry including success of ventilation, success of tracheal intubation, and complications. METHODS:We reviewed the Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry to identify all cases of awake supraglottic airway placement before planned tracheal intubation from August 2012 to September 2023 with subsequent review of details of awake supraglottic airway placement in the medical record. We present descriptive statistics of patient demographics, ventilation and intubation outcomes, and complications. RESULTS:A supraglottic airway was placed in an awake child in 95 of 8061 (1.2%) cases in the Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry. Median age was 37 days (range 0-17.6 years) and median weight was 3.7 kg (1.6-46.7 kg). Sixteen (17%) cases were in patients older than 2 years and 7 (7%) were in adolescents. Adequate ventilation via a supraglottic airway was achieved in 81/95 (85%, 95% confidence interval [CI], 77%-93%) encounters. Inadequate (n = 13) or impossible (n = 1) ventilation occurred in 14/95 (15%). No complications were reported with supraglottic airway placement. For subsequent intubation, there was a 35% (33/95) first-attempt success rate and 99% (94/95) eventual success, with 1 patient awakened after failed attempts at tracheal intubation. Hypoxia occurred during the first intubation attempt in 9/95 (9%) encounters. The incidence of hypoxia was lower in encounters in which ventilation via the supraglottic airway was adequate (4/81, 5%) than in encounters in which ventilation via the supraglottic airway was inadequate or impossible (5/14, 36%). CONCLUSIONS:Although infrequently attempted, awake placement of a supraglottic airway in children with difficult airways achieved adequate ventilation and provided a conduit for oxygenation and ventilation after induction of anesthesia across a spectrum of ages.
BACKGROUND:We investigated how syndromic versus nonsyndromic forms of micrognathia impacted difficult intubation outcomes in children. Primary outcome was the first-attempt success rate of tracheal intubation, secondary outcomes were number of intubation attempts and complications. We hypothesized that syndromic micrognathia would be associated with lower first-attempt success rate. METHODS:In micrognathic patients enrolled in the Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry (08/2012-03/2019) we retrospectively compared demographic and clinical characteristics between children with nonsyndromic and syndromic micrognathia using standardized mean differences (SMD) and assessed the association of the presence of syndrome with the primary and secondary outcomes using propensity score matching analysis with and without matching for airway assessment findings. RESULTS:Nonsyndromic patients (628) were less likely to have additional airway abnormalities. Syndromic patients (216) were less likely to have unanticipated difficult intubation (2% vs. 20%, SMD 0.59). First-attempt success rates of intubation were: 38% in the syndromic versus 34% in the nonsyndromic group (odds ratio [OR] 1.18; 95% confidence intervals [95% CI] 0.74, 1.89; p = .478), and 37% versus 37% (OR 0.99; 95% CI 0.66, 1.48; p = .959). Median number of intubation attempts were 2 (interquartile range [IQR]: 1, 3; range: 1, 8) versus 2 (IQR: 1, 3; range 1, 12) (median regression coefficient = 0; 95% CI: -0.7, 0.7; p = .999) and 2 (IQR: 1, 3; range: 1, 12) versus 2 (IQR: 1, 3; range 1, 8) (median regression coefficient = 0; 95% CI: -0.5, 0.5; p = .999). Complication rates were 14% versus 22% (OR 0.6; 95% CI 0.34, 1.04; p = .07) and 16% versus 21% (OR 0.71; 95% CI 0.43, 1.17; p = .185). CONCLUSIONS:Presence of syndrome was not associated with lower first-attempt success rate on intubation, number of intubation attempts, or complication rate among micrognathic patients difficult to intubate, despite more associated craniofacial abnormalities. Nonsyndromic patients were more likely to have unanticipated difficult intubations, first attempt with direct laryngoscopy.
OBJECTIVE:To assess whether training provided to an inexperienced clinician just before performing a high stakes procedure can improve procedural care quality, measuring the first attempt success rate of trainees performing infant orotracheal intubation. DESIGN:Randomized clinical trial. SETTING:Single center, quaternary children's hospital in Boston, MA, USA. PARTICIPANTS:A non-crossover, prospective, parallel group, non-blinded, trial design was used. Volunteer trainees comprised pediatric anesthesia fellows, residents, and student registered nurse anesthetists from 10 regional training programs during their pediatric anesthesiology rotation. Trainees were block randomized by training roles. Inclusion criteria were trainees intubating infants aged ≤12 months with an American Society of Anesthesiology physical status classification of I-III. Exclusion criteria were trainees intubating infants with cyanotic congenital heart disease, known or suspected difficult or critical airways, pre-existing abnormal baseline oxygen saturation <96% on room air, endotracheal or tracheostomy tubes in situ, emergency cases, or covid-19 infection. INTERVENTIONS:Trainee treatment group received preoperative just-in-time expert intubation coaching on a manikin within one hour of infant intubation; control group carried out standard practice (receiving unstructured intraoperative instruction by attending pediatric anesthesiologists). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Primary outcome was the first attempt success rate of intraoperative infant intubation. Modified intention-to-treat analysis used generalized estimating equations to account for multiple intubations per trainee participant. Secondary outcomes were complication rates, cognitive load of intubation, and competency metrics. RESULTS:250 trainees were assessed for eligibility; 78 were excluded, 172 were randomized, and 153 were subsequently analyzed. Between 1 August 2020 and 30 April 2022, 153 trainees (83 control, 70 treatment) did 515 intubations (283 control, 232 treatment). In modified intention-to-treat analysis, first attempt success was 91.4% (212/232) in the trainee treatment group and 81.6% (231/283) in the control group (odds ratio 2.42 (95% confidence interval 1.45 to 4.04), P=0.001). Secondary outcomes favored the intervention, showing significance for decreased cognitive load and improved competency. Complications were lower for the intervention than for the control group but the difference was not significant. CONCLUSIONS:Just-in-time training among inexperienced clinicians led to increased first attempt success of infant intubation. Integration of a just-in-time approach into airway management could improve patient safety, and these findings could help to improve high stakes procedures more broadly. Background The Paediatric Difficult Intubation Collaborative identified multiple attempts and persistence with direct laryngoscopy as risk factors for complications in children with difficult tracheal intubations and subsequently engaged in initiatives to reduce repeated attempts and persistence with direct laryngoscopy in children. We hypothesised these efforts would lead to fewer attempts, fewer direct laryngoscopy attempts and decrease complications. Methods Paediatric patients less than 18 years of age with difficult direct laryngoscopy were enrolled in the Paediatric Difficult Intubation Registry. We define patients with difficult direct laryngoscopy as those in whom (1) an attending or consultant obtained a Cormack Lehane Grade 3 or 4 view on direct laryngoscopy, (2) limited mouth opening makes direct laryngoscopy impossible, (3) direct laryngoscopy failed in the preceding 6 months, and (4) direct laryngoscopy was deferred due to perceived risk of harm or poor chance of success. We used a 5:1 propensity score match to compare an early cohort from the initial Paediatric Difficult Intubation Registry analysis (August 6, 2012-January 31, 2015, 785 patients, 13 centres) and a current cohort from the Registry (March 4, 2017-March 31, 2023, 3925 patients, 43 centres). The primary outcome was first attempt success rate between cohorts. Success was defined as confirmed endotracheal intubation and assessed by the treating clinician. Secondary outcomes were eventual success rate, number of attempts at intubation, number of attempts with direct laryngoscopy, the incidence of persistence with direct laryngoscopy, use of supplemental oxygen, all complications, and severe complications. Findings First -attempt success rate was higher in the current cohort (42% vs 32%, OR 1.5 95% CI 1.3-1.8, p < 0.001). In the current cohort, there were fewer attempts (2.2 current vs 2.7 early, regression coefficient -0.5 95% CI -0.6 to -0.4, p < 0.001), fewer attempts with direct laryngoscopy (0.6 current vs 1.0 early, regression coefficient -0.4 95% CI -0.4 to 0.3, p < 0.001), and reduced persistence with direct laryngoscopy beyond two attempts (7.3% current vs 14.1% early, OR 0.5 95% CI 0.4-0.6, p < 0.001). Overall complication rates were similar between cohorts (19% current vs 20% early). Severe complications decreased to 1.8% in the current cohort from 3.2% in the early cohort (OR 0.55 95% CI 0.35-0.87, p = 0.011). Cardiac arrests decreased to 0.8% in the current cohort from 1.8% in the early cohort. We identified persistence with direct laryngoscopy as a potentially modifiable factor associated with severe complications. Interpretation In the current cohort, children with difficult tracheal intubations underwent fewer intubation attempts, fewer attempts with direct laryngoscopy, and had a nearly 50% reduction in severe complications. As persistence with direct laryngoscopy continues to be associated with severe complications, efforts to limit direct laryngoscopy and promote rapid transition to advanced techniques may enhance patient safety. Difficult bag-mask ventilation (BMV) occurs in 10% of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) tracheal intubations (TI). The reasons clinicians identify difficult BMV in the PICU and the interventions used to mitigate that difficulty have not been well-studied. This is a prospective, observational, single-center study. A patient-specific data form was sent to PICU physicians supervising TIs from November 2019 through December 2020 to identify the presence of difficult BMV, attempted interventions used, and perceptions about intervention success. The dataset was linked and merged with the local TI quality database to assess safety outcomes. Among 305 TIs with response (87% response rate), 267 (88%) clinicians performed BMV during TI. Difficult BMV was reported in 28 of 267 patients (10%). Commonly reported reasons for difficult BMV included: facial structure (50%), high inspiratory pressure (36%), and improper mask fit (21%). Common interventions were jaw thrust (96%) and an airway adjunct (oral airway 50%, nasal airway 7%, and supraglottic airway 11%), with ventilation improvement in 44% and 73%, respectively. Most difficult BMV was identified before neuromuscular blockade (NMB) administration (96%) and 67% (18/27) resolved after NMB administration. The overall success in improving ventilation was 27/28 (96%). TI adverse outcomes (hemodynamic events, emesis, and/or hypoxemia < 80%) are associated with the presence of difficult BMV (10/28, 36%) versus non-difficult BMV (20/239, 8%, p < 0.001). Difficult BMV is common in critically ill children and is associated with increased TI adverse outcomes. Airway adjunct placement and NMB use are often effective in improving ventilation.
We read with interest Dr. Feldman’s correspondence1 regarding our study comparing sedation to general anesthesia in children enrolled in the Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry.2 He noted correctly that 27% of the sedated cohort required conversion to general anesthesia and suggested that having a separate clinician administer the sedation may improve the success rate of tracheal intubation using sedation. Dr. Feldman highlights practice guidelines for non-anesthesiologists to support this idea. Dr. Feldman’s suggestion is an interesting one that makes intuitive sense. Although we suspect that having a clinician dedicated solely to managing the sedation would improve the success rate, we want to clarify that all the tracheal intubations in our study were managed by anesthesiologists, who routinely manage the airway and the anesthetic concurrently. We, however, agree that having a separate clinician administering sedition might improve its efficacy and allow the airway managers to focus solely on tracheal intubation. A similar model is evident in Formula One pit crews, where each team member is focused on a single task executed in a coordinated fashion. This single-task focus has facilitated significant improvements in efficient tire changes, with times decreasing from 60 s in the 1950s to about 2 s today.The issue with this proposal comes down to cost and operating room logistics. How will this additional clinician be funded? Will other operating rooms be placed on hold to accommodate this model? For example, in an ideal world, we suspect that having every anesthesiologist supervise a single anesthetic would enhance patient safety. However, this is not the case because of the inherent costs and the current critical shortage of anesthesiology clinicians. Many institutions occasionally assign an anesthesiologist to a single patient in certain complex cases. However, it remains rare for centers to staff two anesthesiologists to a single anesthetic. Maybe a sedated patient with a difficult airway is one of those circumstances where institutions should consider a 2-1 staffing ratio. BACKGROUND:Management of the pediatric difficult airway can present unique clinical challenges. The Pediatric Difficult Intubation Collaborative (PeDI-C) is an international collaborative group engaging in quality improvement and research in children with difficult airways. The PeDI-C established a WhatsApp™ group to facilitate real-time discussions around the management of the difficult airway in pediatric patients. The goals of this study were to evaluate the patterns of use of the WhatsApp™ group, themes on messages posted on pediatric difficult airway management and to assess the perceived usefulness of the WhatsApp™ group by the PeDI-C members.METHOD:Following research ethics approval, we performed a database analysis on the archived discussion of the PeDI-C WhatsApp™ group from 2014 to 2019 and surveyed members to assess the perceived usefulness of the PeDI-C WhatsApp™ group.RESULTS:5781 messages were reviewed with 350 (6.0%) original stems. The three most common original stem types were advice seeking 98 (28%), announcements 85 (24.2%), and clinical case-sharing 78 (22.2%). The median number of responses to original stems was 9 [2-21.3]. Post types associated with increased responses included those seeking advice on medication/equipment (regression coefficient 0.78, 95% CI [0.41-1.16]; p < .0001); seeking advice on patient care (regression coefficient 1.16, 95% CI [0.86-1.45]; p < .0001), sharing advice on medication/equipment availability (regression coefficient 0.87, 95% CI [0.33-1.40], p < .0016), and clinical case-sharing (regression coefficient 1.2547, 95% CI [0.9401-1.5693] p < .0001). 46/64 members of the group responded to the survey. Replies offering advice regarding patient management scenarios were found to be of most interest and 77% of surveyed members found the discussion translatable into their own clinical practice.DISCUSSION:The PeDI-C WhatsApp™ group has facilitated timely knowledge exchange on pediatric difficult airway management across the world. Participants are satisfied with the role the Whatsapp™ group is playing.
Children with difficult tracheal intubation are at increased risk of severe complications, including hypoxaemia and cardiac arrest. Increasing experience with the simultaneous use of videolaryngoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy (hybrid) in adults led us to hypothesise that this hybrid technique could be used safely and effectively in children under general anaesthesia. We reviewed observational data from the international Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry from 2017 to 2021 to assess the safety and efficacy of hybrid tracheal intubation approaches in paediatric patients. In total, 140 patients who underwent 180 attempts at tracheal intubation with the hybrid technique were propensity score-matched 4:1 with 560 patients who underwent 800 attempts with a flexible bronchoscope. In the hybrid group, first attempt success was 70% (98/140) compared with 63% (352/560) in the flexible bronchoscope group (odds ratio (95%CI) 1.4 (0.9-2.1), p = 0.1). Eventual success rates in the matched groups were 90% (126/140) for hybrid vs. 89% (499/560) for flexible bronchoscope (1.1 (0.6-2.1), p = 0.8). Complication rates were similar in both groups (15% (28 complications in 182 attempts) hybrid; 13% (102 complications in 800 attempts) flexible bronchoscope, p = 0.3). The hybrid technique was more likely than flexible bronchoscopy to be used as a rescue technique following the failure of another technique (39% (55/140) vs. 25% (138/560), 2.1 (1.4-3.2) p < 0.001). While technically challenging, the hybrid technique has success rates similar to other advanced airway techniques, few complications and may be considered an alternative technique when developing an airway plan for paediatric patients whose tracheas are difficult to intubate under general anaesthesia.
BACKGROUND:Difficult facemask ventilation is perilous in children whose tracheas are difficult to intubate. We hypothesised that certain physical characteristics and anaesthetic factors are associated with difficult mask ventilation in paediatric patients who also had difficult tracheal intubation.METHODS:We queried a multicentre registry for children who experienced "difficult" or "impossible" facemask ventilation. Patient and case factors known before mask ventilation attempt were included for consideration in this regularised multivariable regression analysis. Incidence of complications, and frequency and efficacy of rescue placement of a supraglottic airway device were also tabulated. Changes in quality of mask ventilation after injection of a neuromuscular blocking agent were assessed.RESULTS:The incidence of difficult mask ventilation was 9% (483 of 5453 patients). Infants and patients having increased weight, being less than 5th percentile in weight for age, or having Treacher-Collins syndrome, glossoptosis, or limited mouth opening were more likely to have difficult mask ventilation. Anaesthetic induction using facemask and opioids was associated with decreased risk of difficult mask ventilation. The incidence of complications was significantly higher in patients with "difficult" mask ventilation than in patients without. Rescue placement of a supraglottic airway improved ventilation in 71% (96 of 135) of cases. Administration of neuromuscular blocking agents was more frequently associated with improvement or no change in quality of ventilation than with worsening.CONCLUSIONS:Certain abnormalities on physical examination should increase suspicion of possible difficult facemask ventilation. Rescue use of a supraglottic airway device in children with difficult or impossible mask ventilation should be strongly considered.
Difficult airway management (DAM) in neonates and infants requires anesthesiologists and critical care clinicians to respond rapidly with appropriate evaluation of specific situations. Therefore, organizing information regarding DAM devices and device-oriented guidance for neonate and infant DAM treatment will help practitioners select the safest and most effective strategy. Based on DAM device information and reported literature, there are three modern options for DAM in neonates and infants that can be selected according to the anatomical difficulty and device-oriented strategy: (1) video laryngoscope (VLS), (2) supraglottic airway device (SAD), and (3) flexible fiberoptic scope (FOS). Some VLSs are equipped with small blades for infants. Advanced SADs have small sizes for infants, and some effectively function as conduits for endotracheal intubation. The smallest FOS has an outer diameter of 2.2 mm and enables intubation with endotracheal tubes with an inner diameter of 3.0 mm. DAM in neonates and infants can be improved by effectively selecting the appropriate device combination and ensuring that available providers have the necessary skills.
Respiratory adverse events in adults with COVID-19 undergoing general anaesthesia can be life-threatening. However, there remains a knowledge gap about respiratory adverse events in children with COVID-19. We created an international observational registry to collect airway management outcomes in children with COVID-19 who were having a general anaesthetic. We hypothesised that children with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 would experience more hypoxaemia and complications than those without. Between 3 April 2020 and 1 November 2020, 78 international centres participated. In phase 1, centres collected outcomes on all children (age ≤ 18 y) having a general anaesthetic for 2 consecutive weeks. In phase 2, centres recorded outcomes for children with test-confirmed or suspected COVID-19 (based on symptoms) having a general anaesthetic. We did not study children whose tracheas were already intubated. The primary outcome was the incidence of hypoxaemia during airway management. Secondary outcomes included: incidence of other complications; and first-pass success rate for tracheal intubation. In total, 7896 children were analysed (7567 COVID-19 negative and 329 confirmed or presumed COVID-19 positive). The incidence of hypoxaemia during airway management was greater in children who were COVID-19 positive (24 out of 329 (7%) vs. 214 out of 7567 (3%); OR 2.70 (95%CI 1.70-4.10)). Children who had symptoms of COVID-19 had a higher incidence of hypoxaemia compared with those who were asymptomatic (9 out of 51 (19%) vs. 14 out of 258 (5%), respectively; OR 3.7 (95%CI 1.5-9.1)). Children with confirmed or presumed COVID-19 have an increased risk of hypoxaemia during airway management in conjunction with general anaesthesia.
BACKGROUND:There are limited data on the use of video laryngoscopy for pediatric patients outside of the operating room. AIM:Our primary aim was to evaluate whether implementation of video laryngoscopy-guided coaching for tracheal intubation is feasible with a high level of compliance and associated with a reduction in adverse tracheal intubation-associated events. METHODS:This is a pre-post observational study of video laryngoscopy implementation with standardized coaching language for tracheal intubation in a single-center, pediatric intensive care unit. The use of video laryngoscopy as a coaching device with standardized coaching language was implemented as a part of practice improvement. All patients in the pediatric intensive care unit were included between January 2016 and December 2017 who underwent primary tracheal intubation with either video laryngoscopy or direct laryngoscopy. The uptake of the implementation, sustained compliance, tracheal intubation outcomes including all adverse tracheal intubation-associated events, oxygen desaturations (<80% SpO2), and first attempt success were measured. RESULTS:Among 580 tracheal intubations, 284 (49%) were performed during the preimplementation phase, and 296 (51%) postimplementation. Compliance for the use of video laryngoscopy with standardized coaching language was high (74% postimplementation) and sustained. There were no statistically significant differences in adverse tracheal intubation-associated events between the two phases (pre- 9% vs. post- 5%, absolute difference -3%, CI95 : -8% to 1%, p = .11), oxygen desaturations <80% (pre- 13% vs. post- 13%, absolute difference 1%, CI95 : -6% to 5%, p = .75), or first attempt success (pre- 73% vs. post- 76%, absolute difference 4%, CI95 : -3% to 11%, p = .29). Supervisors were more likely to use the standardized coaching language when video laryngoscopy was used for tracheal intubation than with standard direct laryngoscopy (80% vs. 43%, absolute difference 37%, CI95 : 23% to 51%, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS:Implementation of video laryngoscopy as a supervising device with standardized coaching language was feasible with high level of adherence, yet not associated with an increased occurrence of any adverse tracheal intubation-associated events and oxygen desaturation.
