The instability of the shear layer developing past the sharp corner of the flap side edge has been proposed as a possible mechanism contributing to noise generation by highlift devices. The purpose of the present paper is to report experimental and numerical investigations on the cylindrical shear layer developing past a sharp wing tip. Steady and unsteady local flow measurements have been performed in a wind-tunnel to determine the flow fluctuation frequencies. These frequencies are compared with the results of local stability computations on the shear layer.
The flap side edge vortex is suspected to contribute to aerodynamic noise generation. Using a temporal stability analysis, Khorrami and Singer have shown that unstable modes could exist in this vortex. Due to the convective nature of this instability, a spatial analysis is more suitable. This is the subject of the present work. The mean flow past a 2D wing with a half-span flap has been computed with a steady 3D Navier-Stokes code. Then, local linear stability calculations are performed in several planes perpendicular to the vortex axis. The vortex is assumed axisymmetric and modelled with Batchelor's analytical vortex. Using Gaster's relation, the spatial amplification rate is calculated, giving by integration the relative amplitude of the fluctuations. Some low-frequency fluctuations are seen to be preferentially amplified by the vortex, but the amplifications remain small, so that this mechanism alone should not produce important noise in this particular configuration, where the flap deflection angle is moderate.
This document provides a synthesis of recent experimental research studies conducted at ONERA, aiming at a better charac terisation of aircraft wake vortex and its control. Thus, either generic, two-engine or f our-engine transport aircraft-type models have been considered in existing complementary facilities from ONERA, being the most appropriate for scrutinizing different stage s of wake evolution. Main results from several research programmes are discussed. Th ey have been obtained both from National and European activities, although emphasis has been set on the 5 th Framework Programme project "C-Wake: Wake Vortex C haracterisation and Control".

A lot of research on Wake Vortex characterization a nd alleviation has been conducted in the last decade by ONERA in the framework of either national activities or European partnership. The present paper will highlight the main results that have bee n obtained at ONERA for these last years, with emphasising on characterisation of wake vortex evol ution, and, on the development of strategies for wake vortex alleviation. All the results, discussed and detailed in the pres ent paper, were obtained in the framework of the C- Wake and AWIATOR E.C. projects as well as the research programme funded by DPAC, knowing that some of these results took benefit of specific investigations carried out separately on behalf of the ONERA Federative Research Project. Thus, the above-cited projects and research program mes dealt with both experimental and numerical investigations to characterise the wake flow field generated by generic very large or standard four- engine large transport-type aircraft models. Highly documented data bases were generated from various facilities up to full-scale flight trials; results from such trials will not be covered in the present paper, yet. Thus, the different stages of the wake evolution were identified from two complementary ONERA facilities, using their most appropriate meas urement techniques:
