The determination of total aromatics in petroleum fractions (i.b.p.− 215 °C) containing saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons has been achieved by g.c. using 30% OV-275 as a liquid phase. The proposed method for determination of total aromatics in such fractions is advantageous compared with known methods, because of its simplicity and rapidity as well as the precision and reliability of the results.

Enhanced limiting currents for the polarographic reduction of vanadium(V) in NH3-NH4Cl electrolyte are observed in the presence of nitrite ions. The limiting current is independent of the head of mercury and is proportional to the square root of the nitrite ion concentration. The enhanced current is attributed to the catalytic reduction of nitrite ion, involving the following reactions: V(V) + 3 e → V(II) V(II) + NO2− →k V(IV) + reduction of products of NO2− V(IV) 4 + 2 e → V(II)
Isothermal and programmed temperature methods for gas chromatographic analysis of mercaptans and sulfides used in odorants are discussed. Relative retention times and compound response factors are summarized. Chromatograms of known mixtures are shown. Average standard deviations from actual concentrations are 0.3% for the isothermal method and 0.5% for the programmed method.
