SUMMARY Solid-state operational amplifiers, a diode gate, and flip-flop circuits have been used to construct a versatile signal generator for electroanalytical experiments, especially cyclic voltammetry. The unit produces ramp and hold signals, single-cycle triangular waves, and multicycle triangular waves, with independently selectable initial potential, anodic and cathodic limit potentials, and hold potential. The scan rates available range from 0.2 mV/sec to 1000 V/sec.

Stripping analysis techniques were extended to the study of mixed Co-Zn amalgams in hanging mercury drop electrodes. The composition of the intermetallic compound and the equilibria- involved in the amalgam phase were investigated. Rapid and convenient methods were developed using data from anodic stationary electrode polarograms of the mixed amalgams. The results confirmed previous work, and indicated that the intermetallic compound is CoZn, in equilibrium with Co2 and Zn2 with K = [Co2]/[Zn2].[CoZn]2 = 2 (Rel. S.D., 20%).

The electroreduction of cobalt (II) from solutions containing pyridine was investigated with stationary electrode polarography at a hanging mercury drop electrode using both single-scan and cyclic experiments. Scan rates ranged from 50 mVsec to 110 Vsec, and from the variation of the peak potential and the peak current function, ip/Vv, (where ip is the peak current, and v the rate of voltage scan) with scan rate, the reduction appeared to involve a reversible charge transfer followed by an extremely rapid chemical reaction in the amalgam to form a species not electroactive in the same potential range. This product appears to be a dimer or higher cobalt aggregate dissolved in the mercury. It is reoxidized at a potential about 1 V anodic of the reduction wave. This irreversible anodic wave was made the basis of a stripping analysis procedure for the determination of trace quantities of cobalt.
