Primary staphylococcal pneumonia is a rapidly progressive illness with well-described clinical and radiological features and a significant mortality rate. This retrospective study of cases diagnosed over a 20 year period at a tertiary paediatric hospital was undertaken to document the epidemiology and assess the management and mortality of the disease. The survey demonstrated that far fewer patients are being seen than formerly and confirmed that this is a disease primarily affecting infants and Aboriginal children. The initial radiological features were not diagnostic in the majority of cases but typical changes appeared in most at some time during the illness. The use of surgical drainage was not associated with a decrease in the duration of fever or length of hospital stay. The mortality rate has improved but remains significant.
Ceftriaxone as a single daily intravenous dose for 5 days was used to treat seven patients with proven Haemophilus influenzae epiglottitis. All children responded favourably. The serum levels achieved exceeded the MIC by up to 1500 times at the trough level during and for up to 24 h after the completion of the treatment. Side effects were mild and transient and did not disrupt the continuity of the treatment. Ceftriaxone potentially offers a number of clinical and economic advantages in the management of epiglottitis.
The thermal stabilities of four fluoroelastomers, a polyphosphazene elastomer and four polysiloxanes, mainly in the vulcanised state, have been compared by isothermal weight loss experiments in nitrogen, or in air. The overall activation energies for degradation as a function of percentage conversion to volatiles have also been determined. In the majority of cases there was a linear relationship between activation energy and percentage conversion but the slope may be positive, negative or zero.
The thermal stabilities of eleven different epoxy resin formulations, ten different polyimide resin formulations, a triazine resin formulation and two aromatic thermoplastic matrices have been compared by isothermal gravimetry in air. The overall activation energies for degradation as a function of percentage weight loss have been determined by regression analysis of the isothermal data. The values obtained indicate a very complex breakdown mechanism in the majority of cases.
Summary: Hematologic variables were measured in 240 apparently healthy infants ranging from 1–12 months of age attending a well baby clinic. There were 20 infants for each month of age. Hematologic parameters were measured in each infant by Coulter Counter Model S. Serum iron, total iron binding capacity, free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) and serum ferritin levels were measured in most infants. Their weights together with their serum iron, total iron binding capacity, and serum ferritin were judged to be independent variables of iron status, whereas the hematologic variables were considered to be response variables indicative of iron status. The correlation coefficients among these variables, after excluding redundant variables and transforming to logarithms, were computed. Canonical correlation analysis was applied to the matrix of correlation coefficients to yield the linear function of the independent variables most highly correlated with a linear function of the response variables. The linear function of the response variables was found to be well approximated by the logarithm of the mean corpuscular haemoglobin, which was highly correlated with each of the independent variables.
The thermal degradation of perfluoropolypyridine was studied in inert and oxidizing atmospheres by thermogravimetric techniques. Volatile products were analyzed mass‐spectrometrically, and the yield of products giving rise to fluoride ion was also determined. The stability of the polymer on a weight loss basis is rather better than that of polytetrafluoroethylene in inert atmospheres, but rather worse in oxidizing atmospheres. The major breakdown route seems to involve removal of the fluorine from the heterocyclic nucleus by a mechanism as yet unknown.
A new method for evaluating histamine antagonists in man is described based on diminution of the effects of intradermal histamine. The inter and intra subject variability of such effects is examined experimentally and previous descriptions reviewed. Measures are adopted to minimise the effects and so achieve maximum economy of drug administrations and subjects. The method is exemplified by comparisons of activity of different preparations of triprolidine and of cyclizine and chlorcycline.
