The purpose of this study was to investigate whether it is possible to increase the resistance to clinical mastitis (CM) by selecting bulls siring daughters whose milk has a low somatic cell count (SCC). Due to the fact that variation in SCC reflects both the ability to preclude infections and to respond to infections, when they occur, it is essential to find out not only the level of correlation between the incidence of CM and SCC but also the linearity of this relationship. If low cell counts indicate a high risk of mastitis that the cow cannot combat herself a non-linear relationship would be expected. A linear regression between SCC and CM means that high SCC-values predominantly express that infections have occurred rather than the ability to combat the infections. Data from the animal disease recording scheme, including all veterinary treatments for clinical mastitis, were used in the analysis. Cell counts were averaged on the log scale for the first 150 days of first lactating cows. A total of 1462 progeny tested Swedish Red and White bulls (SRB), and 911 Swedish Friesian bulls (SLB), with nearly 750 000 effective daughters, were included. The study showed that the correlations between Relative Breeding Values (RBV) for CM and SCC were 0.45 for SRB bulls and 0.41 for SLB bulls. Corresponding genetic correlations were indirectly estimated to be 0.79 and 0.71. Table 1 shows the distributions of RBV’s for CM in relation to RBV’s for SCC. RBV’s above 100 means low incidence of mastitis and low SCCvalues, i.e. the desired traits. As can be seen 71-78% of the bulls with high SCC-values (SCC <90) also have RBV’s less than 100 for CM. Similarly, bulls with RBV’s above 100 for SCC (low cell counts) have low incidences of clinical mastitis in the daughters. Thus, it is obvious that there are only exceptional cases where bulls transmit a high incidence of mastitis that are not associated with high cell counts. The regression analysis also showed for both breeds that the relationship between SCC and CM was linear.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether it is possible to increase the resistance to clinical mastitis by selecting for bulls siring daughters whose milk has a low somatic cell count. Data from the animal disease recording scheme, including all veterinary treatments for clinical mastitis, were used in the analysis. A total of 1462 progeny tested Swedish Red and White bulls (SRB), and 911 Swedish Friesian bulls (SLB), with nearly 750 000 effective daughters, were included. Effects of alternative selection criteria on response to clinical mastitis were studied by using selection index theory. Correlations between relative breeding values for clinical mastitis and somatic cell count were 0.45 for SRB bulls and 0.41 for SLB bulls. Corresponding genetic correlations were indirectly estimated to be 0.79 and 0.71. The relationships were found to be linear. It was concluded that it is possible to improve resistance to clinical mastitis by selecting for a low somatic cell count. Due to the higher heritability of the somatic cell count selection based on this was more efficient than selection directly on clinical mastitis to improve mastitis resistance when only small progeny groups (less than 100 daughters) were available. However, a combination of both measures was about 20% more efficient than the former alone. There were no significant differences in relative breeding values for clinical mastitis between bulls differing in their proportion of Holstein-Friesian genes.
A total of 460 bulls of different breeds from the Swedish performance testing stations and 90 bulls from an experimental station were scanned monthly from 9 to 12 months of age and from 9 months to slaughter, respectively. Scanning was performed at the 2nd lumbar vertebra and on certain occasions also at the 13th and 10th thoracic vertebrae. When the bulls from the experimental station were slaughtered, the composition of each carcass was inspected closely. The scanning pictures of the cross-sectional area of M. longissimus dorsi and average subcutaneous fat thickness were interpreted. Significant differences in the scanning measurements were found between beef breeds and between year-batches. Repeatabilities, expressed as intraclass correlation for muscle area when interpreted by different persons, varied between 0.35 and 0.58. The corresponding values for fat thickness were 0.35 and 0.42. The higher values were obtained by persons who had earlier trained interpretation together. It was concluded as important that operators and interpreters have a good knowledge of the anatomy of the body and that they are continuously trained together in the use of the equipment and make regular checks of their results agains each other. The phenotypic correlations between scanning measurements taken just prior to slaughter and important carcass traits such as the amount of muscle and fat tissue, valuable cuts and carcass value varied between 0.34 and 0.48. The corresponding correlations when scanning measurements were made at one year of age varied between 0.11 and 0.35. The correlations between fat thickness and carcass traits were usually low—with some traits negative. The scanning measurements both at one year of age and just prior to slaughter contributed rather little to the overall variation in carcass traits. The largest contributions were obtained for valuable cuts, proportions of muscle and fat tissue and dressing percentage. The additional value of scans made to estimate carcass composition in live bulls for selection purposes is debatable in view of these results and ought to be subjected to further investigation and comparison with other alternatives before being applied.
SummaryIn a long‐term investigation, leg and hoof traits in cattle were regularly studied from rearing to the fifth lactation. 119 heifers divided between the breed groups Swedish Red and White (SRB) monozygous twins, SRB singletons, Swedish Friesian (SLB), F1‐crosses SRB × SLB, and Swedish Jersey (SJB). The animals were housed tethered, and environment and management were well controlled. The objective measurements made were: pigmentation, hoof space width, toe length, bulb height, toe length: bulb height, horn growth, toe angle, ground area, lateral to medial area symmetry, weight‐bearing of ground area, circumference at coronary level, pastern length and hock angle. The methods used are discussed in detail but the final choice, according to their suitability for field use, awaits data on health recordings from an investigation which will be presented in a separate paper.Breed significantly influenced all traits from the first lactation onwards. The SJB animals deviated in many aspects from the other (dual purpose) breeds.Hoof correction was successful in conserving hoof shape. Changes with age of certain traits lead to the conclusion that young cows may be in a critical period when body development exceeds proportional hoof development.
Changes in the bone mineral content (BMG) during the first 4 lactations were continuously studied between July 1977 and February 1982 in a total number of 103 dairy cows of different breeds and rearing intensities. The BMG was measured by dichromatic photon absorptiometry in 2 coccygeal vertebrae. Although great individual variations were found, the changes in BMG during the lactation followed a typical pattern with high values during the dry period and low values after calving and during mid-lactation. The influence of body weight on the BMC value is discussed. The changes in BMC were more accentuated during the first lactation, as compared to the subsequent lactations. This could indicate a metabolically more active skeleton in younger cows. In this study no difference in BMC pattern was observed between cows affected or not affected by parturient paresis.
SummaryIn a longevity study, 169 cows of the most common Swedish dairy breeds were continuously radiographed during their lifetime. The influence of breed and level of feeding on normal skeletal growth and development was studied by estimating time for closure of selected metaphyseal cartilages (growth plates) in the extremities and by calculating a cortical index on X‐ray films of metacarpus and tibia. The rate of lesions in the growth plates was also studied. In general, breed had the greatest influence on the traits studied. The more peripheral growth plates (e. g. metacarpus) completed their closure earlier than the growth plates of radius and ulna. Animals of the Jersey breed (SJB) closed their growth plates faster and earlier in life than did those of the heavier breeds. Swedish Friesian (SLB), closed the growth plates latest of the breeds studied. A higher daily growth rate in all breeds coincided with an earlier start of the closure of the growth plates. The SJB group showed a significantly higher cortical index (p < 0.001) for both metacarpus and tibia at all occasions during the investigation. Animals on the high level of feeding in general showed a higher metacarpal and tibial cortical index (p < 0.001) during the rearing period (6–24 months of age).Mainly during the rearing period, numerous light lesions were found in the growth plates studied, especially in the distal growth plates of radius and metacarpus. No difference in incidence of lesions between breeds or levels of feeding was found. The lesions left no radiographic signs after closure of the growth plates. The study indicates that heifers raised for milk production on a balanced diet and with an average daily weight gain below 680 g do not seem to develop any severe lesions in the growth plates which can be seen as a sign of osteochondrosis.
