Detailed measurements of the wavelength shifting fiber response to a stable and reliable light source are presented. Particulars about materials, a double reference method, and measurement technique are included. The fibers studied were several hundred Kuraray, Y-11, multiclad, 1.2-mm outer diameter wavelength shifting fibers, each cut from a reel to about one meter length. The fibers were polished, mirrored, and the mirrors were UV epoxy protected. Each fiber passed quality control requirements before installation. About 94% of the fibers tested have a response within 1% of the overall mean.
The four magnet types discussed in this report are briefly described in Section 1 of this report. However, for most purposes a discussion of random construction errors needs to deal with only two classes of magnets: collared cosine-theta and superferric. They are discussed in Section 2 and Section 3, respectively. Magnetization effects in the cosine-theta magnets are treated in Section 4. 42 refs., 40 figs., 31 tabs.
A low beta insertion has been installed at the BO straight section of the Tevatron, the location of the Collider Detector Facility. The focus is achieved with four superconducting quadrupole doublets. The engineering design and performance of this system exclusive of beam behavior will be described including the magnets and their power supply, quench protection and cryogenic subsystems.
Employing a neutral kaon beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron, a high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, and a neutron detector, differential cross sections have been obtained in the forward direction [$0.045<|t|<0.18$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$] for the reaction ${K}_{L}^{0}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}n$. Previous studies of the time-reversed process in deuterium, ${K}^{+}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{0}p(p)$, have not yielded direct cross-section measurements in the forward direction because there is an inhibition of the non-spin-flip process in deuterium due to the Pauli exclusion principle. Nevertheless, our data are in agreement with the extracted free-neutron cross sections of deuterium studies as determined from the impulse and closure approximations.
The NAL Main Ring extraction system has delivered both slow and fast extracted beam at 100, 200 and 300 GeV. Construction progress, operating conditions, instrumentation and beam characteristics are discussed.
T HERE is nothing more elusive than capital.
