March 16, 2014. Ninoy Aquino Airport. I arrived at the gate just in time for boarding and am finally on the plane. I had left the house of my friend Tengal four hours in advance but traffic and the unbelievably high level of disorganization at the airport had raised my concerns that I might miss my flight despite all precautions taken. Manila’s international airport is claimed to be the world’s worst and I fully understand why. Queues after queues after queues – I have escaped the gates of hell. As I cram my backpack into the overhead lockers and sit down, relief sets in. Once again, I am tired and sweating and my face bears a striking resemblance to the biometric photograph in my passport – a worn out rendition of myself. But I have accomplished my goal.
