This article is an attempt to understand the current research interest in the aesthetic effects of thingness in pre-modern literature from the perspective of the late modernist cultural situation. The modernist social functionalization of aesthetic processes has long since been used in historical cultural studies. The article seeks to understand the increased awareness of the historical possibilities of aesthetic thought, reflected in recent years in the proposals emanating from the literary discourse the 'thing' (das 'Ding') in terms of the concept of the 'agonal object'. Drawing the historical semantics of 'Ding' and 'Sache', this refers to the aesthetic practice a threefold antagonism which arises in the qualities of literary objects in late and pre-modern times. This agonal practice is so familiar today that its basic medieval concepts can be exemplified by one of the most famous, yet controversial representatives of the so-called 'Jugendbuch'. However, the aesthetic thinking patterns are by no means trivial, as the model interpretation of the assemblage of miraculous castle, bed and pillar in Wolfram von Eschenbach's "Parzival" shows. By mirroring aesthetic objects, they enable us to discover dynamic lines of thought both within and beyond the bounds of positive visibility which show historical aesthetics to an alternative to strictly logical thinking.
The article explores a double reading strategy between narrated economy and narrative economy in story and discourse. For "Fortunatus" it starts from its central aesthetic object, which can be seen as the axiological core of the economic myth in the text. What one would like to think of as a novel from a modern point of view turns out to be an early modern drama on the basis of this object, the depicted world as a theatre in which the characters appear as dramatis personae of a play. Technically, this play can be read prosaically as a narrative, but then it only incessantly gives the impression of sencelessness. A holistic understanding of plot, on the other hand, might reveal something else: a reading preserved by narration that leads through topical spaces that are meaningful as memory chambers and become dramatic memory spaces in the narrative process. To map this double effect, which begins in literature and is repeated in literary studies in the tension between realistic and topological perspectives, the article proposes a concept: that of the catalogue. Already using the example of pre-modern "Fortunatus"-prose, it amounts to the realisation that aesthetic forms of knowledge can enlighten the modern economy of thought about the semantic possibilities of its blind spots.
This article would like to offer an orienting sketch of the historical genesis of the narrative-theoretical and narratological concept of character (German: Figur), the modern narrowing of which is criticized on the guideline of the historical semantics of German. In the interplay of the history of words, and the history of concepts and theories, the finding emerges that the phenomenon and concept of the narrative character in the german understanding of (sic)Figur < is likely to be an oscillating double concept of historical mediality between voice and gaze. Compared to its aesthetic potential, models fall short that close themselves off to the intensity of the tilting movement in favor of an unambiguous terminological fixation, although they already depend on its peculiar fascination effect in the history of concepts. Finally, a thesis-like resume attempts to suggest the further consequences of the observations within the framework of recent research tendencies on the historical aesthetics of the pre-modern era.
Do we need a new hermeneutics? - This question is rhetorical and seems only reasonable at the moment. But it is precisely this appearance that once again indicates the dilemma in which current reading practice finds itself. In the transformation of reading practice accelerated by digitalization, it breaks open, for hermeneutics proves to be an ethical project that is indispensable for communication and reading, and at the same time is itself affected by the very diversification that was set in motion by a technologically forced rationality. Thus, the philosophically irritating, Germanistic or general literary and linguistic pluralization into many, subject- or sub-subject-specific hermeneutics bears witness to the current problem of hermeneutics as well as to its indispensability. The demand for a New Hermeneutics thus presupposes first of all a diagnosis of how and where its varieties are currently located, in order to then target the common site that simultaneously holds hermeneutics together in the < we > of the question. The possible diagnoses will again be different. But only in their totality - according to the thesis of the editors of the Zeitschrift fur Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik - will they contribute to a reassurance about the current problem of understanding.
The sketch proposes to use the metaphor of the dispositif for historical conceptualizations of the phenomena of play, early drama and theatre. The suggestion is: The performative mediality of the play phenomena between voice and gaze as well as word and image can be grasped as a double concept via the dispositive if the media-theoretical understanding of the dispositive as a theatrical framework according to Jean-Louis Baudry is combined with Michel Foucault's discursive concept of the dispositif, which can be understood as a dramatic-textual one. In the correlation of the two contrarotating conceptions, it should then be possible to observe more closely the place which, due to the mutual transgressions of both dispositifs, emerges aesthetically again and again on this side of fixed terminological definitions and which medieval research in particular has always presupposed when constituting its concepts and findings. The proposal thus pleads for a stronger consideration of the paradox of aesthetic concepts with regard to the early forms of play, drama and theatre and their aesthetic gaze regimes.
Based on the observation that literary studies must apparently constantly reassert its concept of fictionality, the sketch poses the question of whether this repetition might not be the expression of a dilemma that scientific conceptual rationality itself creates when dealing with narrative structures. As a proposed solution, it is pointed out, using the example of Hartmann von Aue's Iwein, that the first programmatically fictional Arthurian novel presents and aesthetically resolves this dilemma in narrative, using the example of its protagonist's understanding of the world: in the paradoxical correlation of narrative levels, which should allow a historical narratology to more precisely develop the metaphorical aesthetics of the Arthurian novel.
