The evolutionary theory of socialization of Belsky, Steinberg, and Draper was investigated on the empirical basis of a longitudinal sample of 26 adolescent girls and boys who were born in Berlin during German reunification, as well as their mothers. Consistent with the theory, pubertal timing of the girls (but not of the boys) was predicted by the quality of parental relations in childhood, and pubertal timing of the girls (but not of the boys) was a significant predictor of the age at first intercourse. The results suggest that there are different developmental pathways for girls and boys with respect to the predictions of the evolutionary theory of socialization of Belsky et al. The findings also support the hypothesis that early onset of reproduction and frequent reproduction may be two different aspects of a quantitative reproductive strategy.
The offspring of mothers with epilepsy are considered to be at developmental risk during pregnancy from: (1) generalized maternal seizures (hypoxia); (2) teratogenicity of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs); and (3) adverse socio‐familial conditions associated with having a chronically sick mother. Sixty‐seven children of mothers with epilepsy and 49 children from non‐affected mothers, matched for control variables, were followed from birth to adolescence (53 males, 63 females; mean age 14y 2mo, range 10‐20y). Prediction of intellectual performance of these children during adolescence was calculated from the following variables: maternal generalized seizures, prenatal exposure to AEDs, and quality of family stimulation (HOME Inventory) assessed in children at 2 years of age. Children who were prenatally exposed to AEDs achieved lower IQs than control children at adolescence. This effect was moderately significant for children who had been exposed to monotherapy (6 IQ points lower), but was considerable in those exposed to polytherapy (12 IQ points lower). Generalized seizures during pregnancy, observed in half the mothers, did not exacerbate this effect. Relative to prenatal risk status, the quality of the family environment had varied effects on intellectual development. Children with prenatal risks appeared to be more vulnerable to environmental disadvantage than control children, but they also showed longer‐lasting effects of environmental support.
Down Syndrome children (N=229), aged 1-83 months, from Australia, Canada, and Germany were tested using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Test performances on the Bayley's Mental and Motor scales were not dissimilar, leading to the conclusion that young Down Syndrome children from different countries with relatively comparable standards of health and educational provisions develop at a similar rate. As a group, the Down Syndrome children seemed to take about twice as long as normal children to achieve a particular developmental level. The 707 test protocols of the 229 children did not empirically dictate a specific theory of developmental progression. Linear and logarithmic models coula be fitted equally well. Thc same held true with growth functions fitted to an individual subject's longitudinal data. The most striking result was the large variation of test p!rformances in Down Syndrome children at an early age. Standard deviations were about twice as large as expected from a normal sample at equivalent mean performance levels. This result, along with the early fan-like differentiation of growth curves i children tested repeatedly, was felt to imply that Down Syndrome infants are less protected in their early development by biologically based "self-righting processes" than healthy children. This study investigates teratogenic effects of antiepileptic drugs (AED) by tracing from birth to adolescence 67 children born to epileptic women and a matched control sample of 49 children. We assessed the intellectual performance (WechslerIntelligence Tests) at adolescence as well as the prevalence of psycho-behavioral problems and the relationship to their parents.Adolescents who had been exposed to only one kind of drug during gestation (monotherapy), achieved moderately lower IQ's than those of the control group (-6 IQ scores). However, the effect was salient in polydrug-exposed offspring (-12 IQ scores). Generalized (major) maternal seizures during pregnancy did not add to this effect. The families' psychosocial ecology affected risk and control participants differentially: The intellectual development of adolescents with prenatal risks was significantly more vulnerable to adverse environmental circumstances than was that of controls. With regard to psychological stress the affected children unexpectedly reported significantly less psychological stress than the controls even though they had to assist their mothers more frequently and although they reported receiving little support from them.
