The history of economic development has been characterized by periods of massive transformation brought about by technological innovation. As well as creating new industries, technology transforms the ways we live and work. Steam power led to industrialization and rapid urbanization, electricity enabled the assembly line and mass production of consumer goods, the automobile encouraged mass mobility and the development of suburban living, and the internet and world wide web have revolutionized access to communications and knowledge. It is very hard to anticipate the consequences of such enormously disruptive technologies. Technology continues to surprise, seen, for example, in the unexpected growth of SMS messaging and social networking and the massive changes brought about by online media and music.
Manufacturers in the UK have to develop new and innovative ways to maintain hard-won market positions to protect proprietary technology or compete with low-cost economies. One approach is through services-led competitive strategies. In this first of two articles the authors deal with the need to prepare engineers for a manufacturing industry built around services. The second article (on page 36) examines the threats and opportunities facing manufacturers who move into services.
There have been many turning points in history. One of the most prominent in my mind is the Industrial Revolution, characterized by new technologies that enabled us to reorganize the production of goods and services. It is pretty clear that we are in the early stages of a similar historical turning point. While no one knows for sure what future generations of historians will call this new period we are entering—perhaps the Knowledge Economy—we can certainly identify the forces at work around us.

Grid computing is the next wave of distributed computing based on open standards and using commercial-off-the-shelf building blocks. It is becoming the new economy and major forces propelling the IT industry. In the emerging world of the virtual Internet, grids will provide instant global access to innovative services that deliver the power of the entire Internet to mobile users anywhere, any time, via any device, online or offline. Grid computing is a continuing advances in technology, which is base on open standards-based integration. As grid computing gains support and popularity, the needs grow for studying computer science and technology problems arising from grid systems and applications. Grid computing is supported by many countries and governments. Government plays a very important role in the development of Grid. The ministry of education of China has issued the ChinaGrid project. Currently, Grid technologies are extending to commercial applications. It has a significant influence on human society and various activities.
The authors describe store-through approaches to sharing at the second level in a memory hierarchy. Hardware-implementable schemes are discussed.

As part of this effort, we established several panels to examine specific issues, including a panel to review the ways in which information technology can transform health care and increase access to care for all citizens. The Federal government has a critical role to play in driving this progress, which PITAC has outlined in our report enclosed with this letter, Transforming Health Care Through Information Technology. Information technology provides many exciting applications for the health sector, such as computer-aided surgery, the use of telesensing methods to examine patients from their homes, and patient/doctor interaction via the Internet and digital medical libraries. Information technology tools can provide the health care sector with unprecedented productivity and quality of care if there is a strategic vision and adequate research to ensure success. However, PITAC found that at present the U.S. lacks a broadly disseminated and accepted national vision for information technology in health care. In addition, the biomedical community, including the Federal agencies, is not focused on the basic, long-term information technology research required to provide the community with the state of the art tools necessary to take full advantage of the Information Age. In order to rectify this situation, PITAC strongly recommends that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) outline its vision for using information technology to improve health care in this country and devote the necessary resources to do the basic information technology research critical to accomplishing these goals in the long term. Further, DHHS should appoint a senior information technology leader to provide strategic leadership across DHHS and focus on the importance of information technology in addressing pressing problems in health care. We further recommend four ways that the information technology/health care nexus can be Accomplished:
