Podzolic soils showing an inverted sequence between Bh and Bs horizons have been recently described in the French Pyrenees. This paper deals with the spodic characters of two inverted podzol profiles found in the granitic Estibere valley. Taking into consideration a coherent genesis of these soils, we perform this study through a multidisciplinary approach (e.g., pedology, mineralogy). We describe the evolution of the different forms of free iron and aluminum in relation to organic constituents and the mineralogical characteristics of the soil. Spodic criteria indicate that those soils could be classified as podzolic soils. The study of the spodic horizons show the existence of an ochrous horizon "BP1", rich in immobilized forms of iron (i.e., amorphous and partially crystallized forms). It overlies a darker chocolate colored horizon "BP2- rich in organic-complexed aluminum, aluminosilicate gels and humic constituents, particularly humic acids. We explain the organic accumulation in the deep "BP2" as the result of particular seasonal hydrologic processes related to the geomorphologic and climatogenic situations of the soils profiles.
Some podzolic soils near the timberline display a dark spodic horizon, underlying an ochre horizon. The underlying horizon is thought to be a relic horizon derived from a cryptopodzolic ranker. Their original distribution within the profiles was determined by humic and fulvic acid analysis, We found an increase in fulvic acids in deep ranker horizons and in the spodic horizons. A notable increase in humic acids is also observed in the dark spodic horizon. The origins of these high molecular weight organic substances in high-altitude ecosystems is discussed.
In summer 1995, (June - September) after the draining of the Puyvalador reservoir (1421 m) on the river Aude (Eastern French Pyrenees), colonization of the exposed sediment by vegetation was studied and carlographied. The colonization consisted of a small number of species with a large covering rate. Special attention was given to the biomass and the chemical composition of the dominant vegetation, namely Rorippa islandica. Two approaches were adopted : the mechanisms of colonization and the mobilization of the main nutrients of the biogeochemical cycle. One problem remains uncleared : that is the impact of the chemical elements on the water column during the decay of the once-submerged vegetation.
The mineral nutrition status of trees has long been acknowledged as an indicator of chemical stress which may act at the root level (nutrient deficiencies, Al or Mn toxicity) or at the foliar level (accumulation of anthropogenic sulphur, fluoride, chloride, etc.). Foliar mineral analysis (hereafter shortened to “foliar analysis”) has proved a suitable method for characterising tree nutrition (Tamm 1954, Bonneau 1988; Zöttl 1973; Lambert et al. 1983). Threshold values have been suggested by a number of authors for optimal, adequate and deficient nutrition (Table 1). The interpretation of soil analyses is generally more difficult than that of foliar analyses. In earlier studies foliar chemistry was often found to be poorly correlated with soil chemistry, although the influence of parent material is generally obvious. This may be explained by various factors, such as heterogeneity in soil and root development. Nutritional diagnosis has therefore often been based solely on foliar analysis. Recently, especially in relation to research into soil acidification, several ratios of exchangeable cations in soils were presented as being roughly correlated with the corresponding elements in foliage (see e.g. Tomlinson and Tomlinson 1990; Zöttl and Hüttl 1985). Soil solution chemistry is supposed to provide a better picture of the “chemical climate” of a soil, but it is not possible to apply these ad hoc methodologies to a large number of stands (see however the comparative study of several French sites in Dambrine et al. 1995a and Boudot et al. 1995).
The amount of nutrient reaching the soil below the crown of a juniper tree (Juniperus thurifera L) located at an altitude of 2 450 m in the western High Atlas in Morocco and showing a characteristic ''open structure'' was estimated from 1987 to 1989. The amount of nutrient returned to the soil below the tree crown was high (42 g.year-1.m-2 for the macroelements). Input from rainfall, throughfall and stemflow constituted 20% of this amount and a clear increase was noted in the nutrient concentration in throughfall compared to rainfall (x 3.8). The high input from litter (80% of the total input) was linked to the high mean annual linerfall (1 100 g.m-2 of crown coverage) and to the particularly high concentration of calcium in the litter.
High nitrate concentrations of ground water in agricultural regions not only enhance denitrification in gravel pit lakes but also increase the proportion of nitrous oxide (N2O) in the gaseous products released to the atmosphere. Thereby they contribute to the greenhouse effect and destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer. However, due to the present small area of the lakes, their effect may be considered as important at the global scale.
It appears meanly as a yellowing of the foliage, and early leaf-fall and a modification of the general shape of affected trees. A phyto-ecological study as not shown any major anomaly excepted an obvious ageing of some forest stands as well as an abundant development of epiphytes (lichens, mistletoe) detailed investigations on soils indicate the presence of exceedingly oligotrophous patches; hoverer there is no evidence of possible links with the health of trees. Nevertheless a lack of mineral balance appears in decaying fir-needles (potassium, calcium). Symptoms on firs and beeches are described. The importance of the dye-bak desaese is evaluated thanks to a network of observations (DEFORPA). Two main hypothesis are commented: o possible fluorine pollution and the impact the Pyrenees is the existence of acid rains and the dye-back of forests, but links between these two facts are not yet established.Mots clés: SapinièrePyrénées centralesdépérissementPalabras clave: AbetalPirineo centralmarchitamientoKey words: Fir-plantationsCentral Pyreneesdecaying
