PurposeThe objective of this paper is to document and analyze the organizational activities of faculty members using a personal information management (PIM) framework developed by Jacques (2016).Design/methodology/approachInterviews were carried out with seven faculty members, focusing on their personal information organization practices as they relate to their academic activities. These interviews took the form of a guided tour of informants' digital workspaces.FindingsAnalyses focused on PIM activities make it possible to identify the different strategies adopted by faculty members to organize their academic personal information. This qualitative approach highlights four activities involved in the organization of personal information: inclusion, exclusion, apprehension and implementation. It also reveals differences in the ability of faculty members to analyze their own practices. Finally, the relationship to time and memory of PIM practices is examined through the lens of the concepts of virtualization and actualization.Originality/valueThis research provides a more nuanced understanding of PIM practices, specifically of organizational activities, by considering the meaning of these practices for individuals as part of their daily lives. It aims to foster literacy by facilitating the interactions of individuals with their personal information through educational activities.
The growth of archival studies programs has prompted archival scholars to establish an international network for supporting collaborative research, curriculum development, and pedagogy. Doctoral education is key to the sustainability of such programs and the continuation of the network over time. We carried out longitudinal research to survey the population of doctoral students attending one or more Archival Education and Research Institutes (AERI), an annual meeting first held in 2009. Building on prior research on graduate archival education, we gathered demographic and qualitative data about doctoral students specializing in archival studies who are based in several countries including the USA. We sought to assess attendee motivations, guide conference planning, and help advance overall AERI objectives. Our study provides a baseline understanding of the disciplinary backgrounds, research directions, and specific professional development activities that doctoral students in archival studies pursued around the globe from 2013 to 2015. This paper argues that doctoral education should continue to be a particular subject of archival research and indicates how archival students’ range of academic interests is diversifying and strengthening the scholarly community.

This paper presents and discusses the results of the second phase of the development of TIIARA (Taxonomy for Image Indexing and RetrievAl), a bilingual taxonomy dedicated to image indexing and retrieval. TIIARA offers indexers and image searchers innovative and coherent access points for ordinary images. Initially developed in French and English, the taxonomy has been subsequently translated in 8 languages. The preliminary steps of the elaboration of the bilingual structure are briefly described. The process used in the translation of TIIARA in Arabic language is presented, as well as the main difficulties encountered by the translator. Adding more languages in TIIARA constitutes an added value for a controlled vocabulary meant to be used by image searchers who are often limited by their lack of knowledge of multiple languages.

The performance of the two main searching features of the image search engine (the keyword box and taxonomic structure) is compared. In addition, this study aims to understand the effect of users’ language on their language preferences when searching for images. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using search retrieval tasks and a questionnaire.Résumé:Cet article présente la troisième et dernière phase d’un projet de recherche dans lequel le moteur de recherche SINCERITY a été évalué avec un échantillon d’images et de chercheurs d’images. La performance des deux principales fonctions de recherche du moteur de recherche d’images (recherche par mot-clé et avec une structure taxinomique) est comparée. En outre, cette étude vise à comprendre l’impact du langage du chercheur d’images sur leurs préférences linguistiques lors de la recherche d’images. Des données quantitatives et qualitatives ont été recueillies à l’aide des tâches de repérage et d’un questionnaire écrit.

This poster presents a research project that aims todevelop an interface model for image retrieval(SINCERITY) in a bilingual (French and English)context, that is, when the query language differs fromthe indexing language. This poster will summarize theresults of the first and second phases of the projectand will present the preliminary results of the usertesting. Once fully developed, SINCERITY is intendedto be an innovative tool for image searchers who arelooking for ordinary images. The main contribution ofthis project lies in bridging a gap for unilingual imagesearchers. Racing bicycles have evolved significantly over the past decades as technology and cyclists' comfort have become a critical design issue. Although ample research has been conducted on comfort for other means of transportation, cyclists' perception of dynamic comfort has received scant attention in the scientific literature. The present study investigates how enthusiast cyclists conceptualize comfort using an online survey with 244 respondents. The purpose is to determine which factors contribute to comfort when riding a bicycle, to identify situations in which comfort is relevant and to determine the extent to which vibrations play a role in comfort evaluations. We found that comfort is influenced by factors related to bicycle components (specifically the frame, saddle and handlebar), as well as environmental factors (type or road, weather conditions) and factors related to the cyclist (position, adjustments, body parts). Respondents indicated that comfort is a concern when riding a bicycle in most situations and they believed that comfort is compatible with performance. The PCA analysis shows that for the perception "human factor-body parts" are put in evidence, and the "cyclist's comfort" evaluation is mainly based on certain qualities related to the bicycle components, then the road and external conditions (e.g. weather, temperature).
This paper presents the final phase of a research project that aims to develop a bilingual taxonomy (English and French) for the indexing of ordinary digital images. The objective of this last stage was to ask a representative sample of image searchers to complete retrieval tasks of images indexed using the new taxonomy TIIARA to measure its degree of effectiveness and efficiency. During this experiment, a sample of 60 participants were asked to indicate where in the taxonomic structure they thought they would find each one of the 30 images shown. Respondents also completed a questionnaire intended to obtain their general opinion on MARA and to report any difficulties encountered during the retrieval process. The quantitative data was analyzed according to statistical methods, while the content of the open-ended questions was analyzed and coded to identify emergent themes. The findings of this ultimate phase of the research project indicated that, despite the fact that some categories still need further refining, TIIARA already constitutes a successful tool that provides access to ordinary images. Furthermore, the bilingual taxonomy constitutes a definite benefit for image searchers who are not very familiar with images indexed in English, which is still the dominant language of the Web.
This paper presents and discusses the results of the second phase of the project that aims to investigate the roles and usefulness of search characteristics and functionalities used for image retrieval in a bilingual context, from the user's point of view. The difficulties encountered by image searchers are described. Finally, suggestions to be integrated in a search interface model are presented. This exploratory study provides an understanding of how users with different linguistic and cultural background search for images.
This study investigates the roles and usefulness of search characteristics and functionalities for image retrieval in a bilingual context. Using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, data were collected from English and French speaking participants to provide an understanding of how real users search for images online. The results suggested that the image search process still presents difficulties and frustration from the image searchers' point of view. The findings of this stage of the research project constitute the foundation for the development of a bilingual interface for the retrieval of digital images.
This research aims to identify how the notion of comfort in the context of bicycling is conveyed in an American bicycling magazine and online forum. An iterative approach, comprising of a content analysis and linguistic discourse analysis aims to go beyond the generally-accepted definition that focuses on vibrations, and identify the different concepts and typical situations relevant to study comfort for enthusiast cyclists. Are discussed the selection criteria for the magazine and online forum, the development of the coding protocol (including the final operational definition of each concepts) and the method for retrieving and analyzing online forum posts. A quantitative analysis, looking at the number of occurrences for each concept and theme, combined with a qualitative analysis of pronoun use, positive and negative descriptors, and opposing statements shows a complex link between the cyclist, the bicycle, and the environment. The behaviour of the bicycle, environmental factors, what the cyclists thinks and feels as well as the goal of the ride affect how comfort is conceptualized.
