A theta divisor on the universal principally polarised abelian variety can be extended to a compactification either by taking the Zariski closure, or by taking the unique extension which is pure of weight 2. For the latter, following ideas of Yuan and Zhang, we need to pass to the category of adelic- or b-divisors. We show that the two choices of extension differ by a tropicalisation of the Riemann theta function. We prove an extension of Moret-Bailly's ''key formula'' that features the pure weight 2 extension of the theta divisor, and discuss various arithmetic applications, including a ''universal'' formula for the Néron--Tate height of a point. A key technical input is the systematic use of the theory of logarithmic abelian varieties due to Kajiwara, Kato, and Nakayama.
We introduce delta-forms on tropical toric varieties generalizing the construction of Mihatsch for R^n. These delta-forms will be used to define the star-product with Green functions of piecewise smooth type on a tropical toric variety. As an application, we show that non-archimedean local heights of projective varieties can be computed using the star-product on a suitable complete tropical toric variety. On the way, we show that open subsets of a simplicial tropical toric variety have a locally finite simplicial decomposition which is constant towards the boundary.
Tropical toric varieties are partial compactifications of finite dimensional real vector spaces associated with rational polyhedral fans. We introduce plurisubharmonic functions and a Bedford--Taylor product for Lagerberg currents on open subsets of a tropical toric variety. The resulting tropical toric pluripotential theory provides the link to give a canonical correspondence between complex and non-archimedean pluripotential theories of invariant plurisubharmonic functions on toric varieties. We will apply this correspondence to solve invariant non-archimedean Monge--Ampère equations on toric and abelian varieties over arbitrary non-archimedean fields.
In this paper we extend the arithmetic intersection theory of adelic divisors on quasiprojective varieties developed by X. Yuan and S. W. Zhang to cover certain adelic arithmetic divisors that are not nef nor integrable. The key concept used in this extension is the relative finite energy introduced by T. Darvas, E. Di Nezza, and C. H. Lu. As an application we compute the arithmetic self-intersection number of the line bundle of Siegel-Jacobi forms on the universal abelian variety endowed with its invariant hermitian metric. The techniques developed in this paper can be applied in many other situations like mixed Shimura varieties or the moduli space of stable marked curves.
We show that the ring of Siegel-Jacobi forms of fixed degree and of fixed or bounded ratio between weight and index is not finitely generated. Our main tool is the theory of toroidal b-divisors and their relation to convex geometry. As a byproduct of our methods, we prove a conjecture of Kramer about the representation of all Siegel- Jacobi forms as sections of certain line bundles and we recover a formula due to Tai for the asymptotic dimension of the space of Siegel-Jacobi forms of given ratio between and index.
We introduce notions of concavity for functions on balanced polyhedral spaces, and we show that concave functions on such spaces satisfy several strong continuity properties.
We show a Chern-Weil type statement and a Hilbert-Samuel formula for a large class of singular plurisubharmonic metrics on a line bundle over a smooth projective complex variety. For this we use the theory of b-divisors and the so-called multiplier ideal volume function. We apply our results to the line bundle of Siegel-Jacobi forms over the universal abelian variety endowed with its canonical invariant metric. This generalizes a result of the second author for the universal family of elliptic curves to higher degrees.
For a smooth, projective complex variety, we introduce several mixed Hodge structures associated to higher algebraic cycles. Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. In a special case, this mixed Hodge structure is an oriented biextension, and its height agrees with the higher archimedean height pairing introduced in a previous paper by the first two authors. We also compute a non-trivial example of this height given by Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm function. Finally, we study the variation of mixed Hodge structures of Hodge-Tate type, and show that the height extends continuously to degenerate situations.
Given a smooth complex toric variety we will compare real Lagerberg forms and currents on its tropicalization with invariant complex forms and currents on the toric variety. Our main result is a correspondence theorem which identifies the cone of invariant closed positive currents on the complex toric variety with closed positive currents on the tropicalization. In a subsequent paper, this correspondence will be used to develop a Bedford–Taylor theory of plurisubharmonic functions on the tropicalization.
We generalize the intersection theory of nef toric (Weil) b-divisors on smooth and complete toric varieties to the case of nef b-divisors on complete varieties which are toroidal with respect to a snc divisor. As a key ingredient we show the existence of a limit measure, supported on a balanced rational conical polyhedral space attached to the toroidal embedding, which arises as a limit of discrete measures defined via tropical intersection theory on the polyhedral space. We prove that the intersection theory of nef Cartier b-divisors can be extended continuously to nef toroidal Weil b-divisors and that their degree can be computed as an integral with respect to this limit measure. As an application, we show that a Hilbert–Samuel type formula holds for big and nef toroidal Weil b-divisors.
Let X be a normal projective variety over a complete discretely valued field and L a line bundle on X. We denote by X-an the analytification of X in the sense of Berkovich and equip the analytification L-an of L with a continuous metric parallel to parallel to. We study non-archimedean volumes, a tool which allows us to control the asymptotic growth of small sections of big powers of L. We prove that the non-archimedean volume is differentiable at a continuous semipositive metric and that the derivative is given by integration with respect to a Monge-Ampere measure. Such a differentiability formula had been proposed by M. Kontsevich and Y. Tschinkel. In residue characteristic zero, it implies an orthogonality property for non-archimedean plurisubharmonic functions which allows us to drop an algebraicity assumption in a theorem of S. Boucksom, C. Favre and M. Jonsson about the solution to the non-archimedean Monge-Ampere equation. The appendix by R. Lazarsfeld establishes the holomorphic Morse inequalities in arbitrary characteristic.

Let L be an ample line bundle on a smooth projective variety X over a non-archimedean field K. For a continuous metric on L, we show in the following two cases that the semipositive envelope is a continuous semipositive metric on L and that the non-archimedean Monge-Ampere equation has a solution. First, we prove it for curves using results of Thuillier. Second, we show it under the assumption that X is a surface defined geometrically over the function field of a curve over a perfect field k of positive characteristic. The second case holds in higher dimensions if we assume resolution of singularities over k. The proof follows a strategy from Boucksom, Favre and Jonsson, replacing multiplier ideals by test ideals. Finally, the appendix by Burgos and Sombra provides an example of a semipositive metric whose retraction is not semipositive. The example is based on the construction of a toric variety which has two SNC-models which induce the same skeleton but different retraction maps.
We address the distribution properties of points of small height on proper toric varieties and applications to the related Bogomolov property. We introduce the notion of monocritical toric metrized divisor and we prove that equidistribution occurs for every generic, small sequence with respect to a toric metrized divisor, for every place if and only if the divisor is monocritical. Furthermore, when this is the case, the limit measure is a translate of the natural measure on the compact torus sitting in the principal orbit of the ambient toric variety. We also study the $v$-adic modulus distribution of Galois orbits of small points. We characterize, in terms of the given toric semipositive metrized divisor, the cluster measures of $v$-adic valuations of Galois orbits of generic small sequences. The Bogomolov property now says that a subvariety of the principal orbit of a proper toric variety that has the same essential minimum than the toric variety with respect to a monocritical toric metrized divisor, must be a translate of a subtorus. We also give several examples, including a non-monocritical divisor for which the Bogomolov property does not hold.
We study the degeneration of semipositive smooth hermitian line bundles on open complex manifolds, assuming that the metric extends well away from a codimension two analytic subset of the boundary. Using terminology introduced by R. Hain, we show that under these assumptions the so-called height jump divisors are always effective. This result is of particular interest in the context of biextension line bundles on Griffiths intermediate jacobian fibrations of polarized variations of Hodge structure of weight -1, pulled back along normal function sections. In the case of the normal function on M-g associated to the Ceresa cycle, our result proves a conjecture of Hain. As an application of our result we obtain that the Moriwaki divisor on (M) over bar (g) has non-negative degree on all complete curves in (M) over bar (g) not entirely contained in the locus of irreducible singular curves.
We give a new definition of higher arithmetic Chow groups for smooth projective varieties defined over an arithmetic field, which is similar to Gillet and Soulé's definition of arithmetic Chow groups. We also give a compact description of the intersection theory of such groups. A consequence of this theory is the definition of a heigh pairing between two higher algebraic cycles of complementary dimensions, whose real regulator class is zero. This description agrees with Beilinson's height pairing for the classical arithmetic Chow groups. We also give examples of higher arithmetic intersection pairing in dimension zero.
We describe an explicit morphism of complexes that induces the cycleclass maps from (simplicially described) higher Chow groups to rational Deligne cohomology. The reciprocity laws satisfied by the currents we introduce for this purpose are shown to provide a clarifying perspective on functional equations satisfied by complex-valued di- and trilogarithms.
In this paper we study the singularities of the invariant metric of the Poincaré bundle over a family of abelian varieties and their duals over a base of arbitrary dimension. As an application of this study we prove the effectiveness of the height jump divisors for families of pointed abelian varieties. The effectiveness of the height jump divisor was conjectured by Hain in the more general case of variations of polarized Hodge structures of weight $-1$.
