We investigate spectral functionals associated with Dirac and Laplace-type differential operators on manifolds, defined via the Wodzicki residue, extending classical results for Dirac operators derived from the Levi-Civita connection to geometries with torsion. The local densities of these functionals recover fundamental geometric tensors, including the volume form, Riemannian metric, scalar curvature, Einstein tensor, and torsion tensor. Additionally, we introduce chiral spectral functionals using a grading operator, which yields novel spectral invariants. These constructions offer a richer spectral-geometric characterization of manifolds.
We examine the metric and Einstein bilinear functionals of differential forms introduced in Adv.Math.,Vol.427,(2023)1091286, for Hodge-Dirac operator $d+\delta$ on an oriented even-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We show that they reproduce these functionals for the canonical Dirac operator on a spin manifold up to a numerical factor. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the associated spectral triple is spectrally closed, which implies that it is torsion-free.
Modifications of standard general relativity that bring torsion into the game have a long-standing history. However, no convincing arguments exist for or against its presence in physically acceptable gravity models. In this Letter, we provide an argument based on spectral geometry (using methods of pseudodifferential calculus) that suggests that the torsion shall be excluded from the consideration. We demonstrate that there is no well-defined functional extending to the torsion-full case of the spectral formulation of the Einstein tensor.
We compute the nonvanishing spectral torsion functional of the internal part of the noncommutative geometry behind the Standard Model. We show that with a suitable modification of the usual differential graded calculus it matches an analogous functional constructed in terms of the connection. We study also the impact of the torsion on the other spectral fuctionals, which correspond to geometric invariants such as volume integral, metric and Einstein tensors, and scalar curvature. We discuss the impact of the SM Yukawa couplings and the Majorana mass matrix on our results.
We relate the recently defined spectral torsion with the algebraic torsion of noncommutative differential calculi on the example of the almost-commutative geometry of the product of a closed oriented Riemannian spin manifold M with the two-point space Z(2 ).
We introduce a trilinear functional of differential one-forms for a finitely summable regular spectral triple with a noncommutative residue. We demonstrate that for a canonical spectral triple over a closed spin manifold it recovers the torsion of the linear connection. We examine several spectral triples, including Hodge-de Rham, Einstein-Yang-Mills, almost-commutative two-sheeted space, conformally rescaled noncommutative tori, and quantum SU(2) group, showing that the third one has a nonvanishing torsion if nontrivially coupled.
We study the relationship between antipodes on a Hopf algebroid $\mathcal{H}$ in the sense of B\"ohm-Szlachanyi and the group of twists that lies inside the associated convolution algebra. We specialize to the case of a faithfully flat $H$-Hopf-Galois extensions $B\subseteq A$ and related Ehresmann-Schauenburg bialgebroid. In particular, we find that the twists are in one-to-one correspondence with $H$-comodule algebra automorphism of $A$. We work out in detail the $U(1)$-extension ${\mathcal O}(\mathbb{C}P^{n-1}_q)\subseteq {\mathcal O}(S^{2n-1}_q)$ on the quantum projective space and show how to get an antipode on the bialgebroid out of the $K$-theory of the base algebra ${\mathcal O}(\mathbb{C}P^{n-1}_q)$.
We define bilinear functionals of vector fields and differential forms, the densities of which yield the metric and Einstein tensors on even-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We generalise these concepts in non-commutative geometry and, in particular, we prove that for the conformally rescaled geometry of the noncommutative two-torus the Einstein functional vanishes.
Given a spectral triple on a unital $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ and an equicontinuous action of a discrete group $G$ on $A$, a spectral triple on the reduced crossed product $C^{*}$-algebra $A\rtimes_r G$ was constructed by Hawkins, Skalski, White and Zacharias in [On spectral triples on crossed products arising from equicontinuous actions, Math. Scand. 113(2) (2013) 262-291], extending the construction by Belissard, Marcolli and Reihani in [Dynamical systems on spectral metric spaces, preprint (2010), arXiv:1008.4617], by using the Kasparov product to make an ansatz for the Dirac operator. Supposing that the triple on $A$ is equivariant for an action of $G$, we show that the triple on $A\rtimes_r G$ is equivariant for the dual coaction of $G$. If moreover an equivariant real structure $J$ is given for the triple on $A$, we give constructions for two inequivalent real structures on the triple $A\rtimes_rG$. We compute the KO-dimension with respect to each real structure in terms of the KO-dimension of $J$ and show that the first and the second order conditions are preserved. Lastly, we characterise an equivariant orientation cycle on the triple on $A\rtimes_rG$ coming from an equivariant orientation cycle on the triple on $A$. We show, along the paper, that our constructions generalize the respective constructions of the equivariant spectral triple on the noncommutative $2$-torus.
We prove a number of results surrounding the Borsuk-Ulam-type conjecture of Baum, Dabrowski, and Hajac (BDH, for short), which states that given a free action of a compact group G on a compact space X, there are no G-equivariant maps X * G -> X (with * denoting the topological join). Mainly, we prove the BDH conjecture for locally trivial principal G-bundles. The proof relies on the nonexistence of G-equivariant maps G*(n+1) -> G*n, which in turn is a strengthening of an unpublished result of Bestvina and Edwards. Moreover, we show that the BDH conjecture partially settles a conjecture of Ageev which implies the weak version of the Hilbert-Smith conjecture stating that no infinite compact zero-dimensional group can act freely on a manifold so that the orbit space is finite-dimensional.
We generalize the notion of spectral triple with reality structure to spectral triples with multitwisted real structure, the class of which is closed under the tensor product composition. In particular, we introduce a multitwisted first-order condition (characterizing the Dirac operators as an analogue of first-order differential operator). This provides a unified description of the known examples, which include rescaled triples with the conformal factor from the commutant of the algebra and (on the algebraic level) triples on quantum disc and on quantum cone, that satisfy twisted first-order condition of Brzeziński et al. (2016, 2019), as well as asymmetric tori, non-scalar conformal rescaling and noncommutative circle bundles. In order to deal with them, we allow twists that do not implement automorphisms of the algebra of spectral triple.
We study solitons of general topological charge over noncommutative tori from the perspective of time-frequency analysis. These solitons are associated with vector bundles of higher rank, expressed in terms of vector-valued Gabor frames. We apply the duality theory of Gabor analysis to show that Gaussians are such solitons for any value of a topological charge. Also they solve self/anti-self duality equations resulting from an energy functional for projections over noncommutative tori, and have a reformulation in terms of Gabor frames. As a consequence, the projections generated by Gaussians minimize the energy functional. We also comment on the case of the Moyal plane and the associated continuous vector-valued Gabor frames and show that Gaussians are the only class of solitons there.
An interesting feature of the finite-dimensional real spectral triple (A,H,D,J) of the Standard Model is that it satisfies a ``second-order'' condition: conjugation by J maps the Clifford algebra Cl_D(A) into its commutant, which in fact is isomorphic to the Clifford algebra itself (H is a self-Morita equivalence Cl_D(A)-bimodule). This resembles a property of the canonical spectral triple of a closed oriented Riemannian manifold: there is a dense subspace of H which is a self-Morita equivalence Cl_D(A)-bimodule. In this paper we argue that on manifolds, in order for the self-Morita equivalence to be implemented by a reality operator J, one has to introduce a ``twist'' and weaken one of the axioms of real spectral triples. We then investigate how the above mentioned conditions behave under products of spectral triples.
Twisted real structures are well-motivated as a way to implement the conformal transformation of a Dirac operator for a real spectral triple without needing to twist the noncommutative 1-forms. We study the coupling of spectral triples with twisted real structures to gauge fields, adopting Morita equivalence via modules and bimodules as a guiding principle and paying special attention to modifications to the inner fluctuations of the Dirac operator. In particular, we analyse the twisted first-order condition as a possible alternative to abandoning the first-order condition in order to go beyond the Standard Model, and elaborate upon the special case of gauge transformations accordingly. Applying the formalism to a toy model, we argue that under certain physically-motivated assumptions the spectral triple based on the left-right symmetric algebra should reduce to that of the Standard Model of fundamental particles and interactions, as in the untwisted case.
Let $H$ be the C*-algebra of a non-trivial compact quantum group acting freely on a unital C*-algebra $A$. It was recently conjectured that there does not exist an equivariant $*$-homomorphism from $A$ (type-I case) or $H$ (type-II case) to the equivariant noncommutative join C*-algebra $A\circledast^\delta H$. When $A$ is the C*-algebra of functions on a sphere, and $H$ is the C*-algebra of functions on ${\mathbb Z}/2{\mathbb Z}$ acting antipodally on the sphere, then the conjecture of type I becomes the celebrated Borsuk-Ulam theorem. Following recent work of Passer, we prove the conjecture of type I for compact quantum groups admitting a non-trivial torsion character. Next, we prove that, if a compact quantum group admits a representation whose \mbox{$K_1$-class} is non-trivial and $A$ admits a character, then a stronger version of the type-II conjecture holds: the finitely generated projective module associated with $A\circledast^\delta H$ via this representation is not stably free. In particular, we apply this result to the $q$-deformations of compact connected semisimple Lie groups and to the reduced group C*-algebras of free groups on $n>1$ generators.
Given the algebra, Hilbert space H, grading and real structure of the finite spectral triple of the Standard Model, we classify all possible Dirac operators such that H is a self-Morita equivalence bimodule for the associated Clifford algebra.
We study the twisted reality condition of Brzeziński et al. (Math Phys Anal Geom 19(3):11, 2016), for spectral triples, in particular with respect to the product and the commutant. Motivated by this, we present the procedure, which allows one to untwist the twisted spectral triples studied in Landi and Martinetti (Lett Math Phys 106:1499–1530, 2016). We also relate this construction to conformally rescaled real twisted spectral triples and discuss the untwisting of the “minimal twist” procedure of an even spectral triple.
We investigate whether the Standard Model, within the accuracy of current experimental measurements, satisfies the regularity in the form of Hodge duality condition introduced and studied in [9]. We show that the neutrino and quark mass-mixing and the difference of fermion masses are necessary for this property. We demonstrate that the current data supports this new geometric feature of the Standard Model, Hodge duality, provided that all neutrinos are massive.
Having in mind applications to particle physics we develop the differential calculus over Jordan algebras and the theory of connections on Jordan modules. In particular we focus on differential calculus over the exceptional Jordan algebra and provide a complete characterization of the theory of connections for free Jordan modules.
We discuss the structure of topologically non-trivial almost-commutative manifold for spectral triples realized on the algebra of smooth functions on the noncommutative torus with rational parameter. This is done by showing isomorphisms with a spectral triple on the algebra of sections of certain bundle of algebras, and with a spectral triple on a certain invariant subalgebra of the product algebra. The isomorphisms intertwine also the grading and real structure. This holds for all four inequivalent spin structures, which are explicitly constructed in terms of double coverings of the noncommutative torus (with arbitrary real parameter). These results are extended also to a class of curved (non flat) spectral triples, obtained as a perturbation of the standard one by eight central elements.
