In May 2021, the liverwort and hornwort flora of Colombia and Ecuador was finally published. After being delayed twice, certainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was eagerly received and could be called an opus magnum of a long career in hepaticology. Having worked and published for over 50 years in this field, the author of this flora, S. Robbert Gradstein, is an accomplished bryologist on an international level and considered the foremost expert on Neotropical liverworts. This rather sizable book, with over 700 pages, is divided into several parts, starting with a brief introduction and a chapter on diversity and endemism. A classification precedes the taxonomic treatment, which, with about 620 pages, is the most extensive segment occupying the bulk of the book. A glossary, references, and an index to scientific names conclude the flora. The reviewer’s assessment of this book is from an Ecuadorian point of view; his knowledge of the Colombian aspects of this publication is limited. Evaluating such an extensive work like the present one is a tedious task, and hardly all observations can be referred to on a few pages; therefore, the comments are limited to some examples. In the abbreviations section, two of the twentyfour provinces of Ecuador are missing and do not appear throughout the book. In the case of Santa Elena, it might be understandable since probably neither collections nor reports of liverworts and hornworts from that province exist. For Santo Domingo de Los Tsáchilas, however, at least some liverwort species are documented; see Burghardt (2021) for a brief discussion. The classification follows Söderström et al. (2016) with minor deviations, like the distinction of Adelanthaceae and Jamesoniellaceae, the inclusion of Anastrophyllaceae in Scapaniaceae, and Southbyaceae in Arnelliaceae, among others. The taxonomic treatment comprises keys and descriptions of about 850 species, consisting of 830 liverworts and 20 hornworts, including the proposal of about a dozen new combinations, species, and subspecies. Furthermore, treatments of several genera like Acrobolbus, Lejeunea, and Lophocolea, among others, are revised. A broad morphological species concept is presented throughout the book, reflected by the proposal of about 100 new synonyms. Seventy plates illustrate almost all genera and about half of the species. Generally, the keys work well. However, the key to the Plagiochila species, including over 100 couplets, is very complex and, at times, challenging to use. Maybe this is owed to the sixty-five species involved and the extreme morphological plasticity of some common species, which key out several times. Nevertheless, it is unclear why the author did not break this key down into several shorter keys as he has done with Lejeunea, a similarly specious genus. There exists conflicting information on the status of Gongylanthus oniscoides (Spruce) Steph.
Acrobolbus mashpianus, a leafy liverwort of the family Acrobolbaceae, is described as new to science from the Chocó Biogeographical Region. It is characterized by strongly asymmetrical, deeply bilobed leaves with ciliate marginal teeth. The new species is illustrated and its relationships within the genus Acrobolbus are discussed. A key to the Ecuadorian species of Acrobolbus is provided.
While revising samples of Dialytrichia saxicola in LISU in preparation for IUCN Threatened Species of Europe assessments, (Sérgio & Porley 2019) we found a collection from Italy that matched the typical expression of this species.The population trend of this species was suspected to be increasing, favoured perhaps by eutrophication, and it was predicted that new areas of occurrence may be found (Sérgio & Porley 2019).It was therefore assessed as Least Concern, and considered native in Belgium, mainland France, Germany, Netherlands, mainland Portugal, Madeira, mainland Spain and Great Britain (Hodgetts & Lockhart 2020).Dialytrichia saxicola was first described from France as Dialytrichia mucronata (Brid.)Broth.var.fragilifolia Bizot & Cl.Roux, and subsequently raised to species rank as Dialytrichia fragilifolia (Bizot & Cl.Roux) F. Lara.It was later regarded as a variety of Dialytrichia mucronata, but taxonomic doubts remained pending further studies.More recently Barbula saxicola Lamy was shown to apply to this species and the transfer of Barbula saxicola to Dialytrichia necessitated the new combination D. saxicola (Lamy) M.J. Cano, since saxicola is the oldest available epithet

Lepicolea ochroleuca is newly recorded for Ecuador and Plagiochila cuneata is new to continental Ecuador, previously known only from the Galapagos Islands. Seventy-seven new provincial records of 62 liverwort species distributed among 15 provinces are presented. The uneven knowledge of the distribution of liverworts in Ecuador is briefly discussed and some observations on collections by non-bryologists are made.
A new species of Symphyogyna, S. caduciloba, is described, based on the combination of ascending growth form, deeply lobate thallus, variable lobe tips with a small, 1–2-celled apical tooth which is sometimes replaced by a slime papilla, and caducous thallus lobes. Relations with similar species are discussed and a key to the lobate species of Symphyogyna in Ecuador is presented.

A preliminary list of the bryophytes of the Mashpi Ecological Reserve is presented and 112 species and one variety of liverworts, 41 species of mosses and one species of hornworts are reported. Nine liverworts (Drepanolejeunea spinosa, Harpalejeunea subacuta, Neurolejeunea sastreana, Plagiochila eggersii, P. rudischusteri, Prionolejeunea magnistipula, P. trachyodes, Trichocolea filicaulis and Zoopsidella integrifolia) and one moss (Cyclodictyon subtortifolium) are newly recorded for Ecuador. Furthermore, 70 liverworts, 19 mosses and one hornwort are registered for the first time for the Province of Pichincha.
Leptoscyphus Mitten (1851: 358), a medium-sized genus of the Lophocoleaceae, is mainly distributed in tropical and temperate South America, Africa and Australasia, and is generally characterized by the brownish gametophyte colour and a laterally compressed perianth with a more or less bilabiate mouth due to the reduction of the ventral lobe (Vanderpoorten et al. 2010). 15 species are reported to occur in Ecuador (Gradstein & Benitez 2017). During revision of recent collections in the National Herbarium of Ecuador (QCNE) an undescribed species came to our attention which we here describe and illustrate.
Two liverworts (Gymnocoleopsis cylindriformis and Schiffneriolejeunea polycarpa) are reported as new to Ecuador as well as 69 new provincial records. Furthermore, corrections are presented for some previously published records.

Ecuador has a very diverse bryophyte flora with about 950 species of mosses and 700 of liverworts and hornworts. Nevertheless, the distribution of the species within the country remains incompletely explored and many species are only known from very few collections. This paper presents new additions to the liverwort and hornwort flora of Ecuador. The hornwort Notothylas vitalii and the liverworts Blepharostoma trichophyllum, Frullania setigera, Isopaches bicrenatus, Platycaulis renifolia and Symphyogyna apiculispina are new to the country, four species are new to southern Ecuador, eighteen are new to the province of Loja, ten are new to Napo, six are new to Pichincha and one species is new to the provinces of El Oro and Carchi respectively. The record of Notothylas vitalii is the first one outside Brazil and constitutes the first record of the genus Notothylas from mainland Ecuador. The rare monospecific genus Platycaulis was previously known only from the type locality in the Venezuelan Andes, and the holarctic Isotaches bicrenatus in the tropics only from two mountains in southeastern Brazil. Several new records were gathered in very humid and bryophyte-rich, wind-stricken, foggy superpáramo vegetation in the Páramo de la Virgen (Napo) at 4100-4300 m. For all species notes on their geographical distribution and habitats in Ecuador as well as their world range are provided.
The liverwort Odontoschisma engelii Gradst. & Burghardt sp. nov. (Cephaloziaceae) is described from páramo vegetation of southern Ecuador and Venezuela. The new species is a member of Odontoschisma section Denudatae R. M. Schust. and differs from all known species of the genus by the strongly elongated leaves.
