This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) leaves extract as a growth promoter in broilers from January to June 2013 under Dept. of Pharmacology, Bangladesh agricultural University, Mymensingh-2022, Bangladesh. Fourty number of day old broiler chicks were taken and after seven days divided into two groups A and B. The B group was supplemented with tulsi leaves extract @ 1ml/litre in drinking water. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight gain up to 5th weeks and blood test was performed at 17th and 35th days age of broiler to study hematological changes between control A and treatment B group. No significant difference in hematological changes was observed in both treatment and control group in 1st week of age but significant change in body weight gain was observed on 35th day. They are 1500 g (control) and 1650 g (treated). The cost of production and economic study was carried out and it was observed that net profit in control group was 5.33 T.K/Kg broiler and in treatment group was 13.33 T.K/Kg broiler. The objectives of this study was to determine the comparative efficacy of some indigenous plants (Bironja, Turmeric and Verenda leaves) with that of patent drug Nilzan against Nematodiasis in sheep. Out of 85 sheep of indigenous breed 75 sheep which were suspected to be suffering from nematode, aged 2- 3 years and weighing about 10-12 kg were used for this study. The sheep were divided into 15 equal groups (Group A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N and O). The collected Bironja, Turmeric and Verenda leaves were cut into small pieces and sun dried for 7 days followed by drying separately in a hot air woven at 45°C for 6 hours. Then alcoholic extracts of selected medicinal plants were prepared by mixing 100 gm of each grinded powdered sample with 250 ml of alcohol and kept in separate air tight bottle and labeled for further study. Administration of three different doses of powdered Bironja (3, 6 & 9 ml /kg body wt), Turmeric (2, 4 & 6 ml /kg body wt) and Verenda leaves (2, 4 & 6 ml /kg body wt) showed 13-40% , 11-15% and 4-7% efficacy respectively against nematodes in sheep. Administration of Nilzan (30 mg/kg body wt) orally was highly effective (73-89%) against all the species of nematodes in sheep. Among medicinal plants Bironja was found to be most effective followed by turmeric. Veranda leaves were found to be totally ineffective against nematodes in sheep. No significant change was observed following treatment with Bironja seeds, Turmeric, Verenda leaves and Nilzan on serum glucose and SGPT in sheep. Experiment was carried out at the Agronomy field of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur, during the period from December 2014 to May 2015 to investigate the response of different levels of N and methods of weeding on weed abundance and grain yield of BRRI hybrid dhan3 under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation condition. The treatments consisted of five N levels viz.,0, 60, 120,180 and 240 kg N ha-1 and four different weed control methods viz., Pre-emergence herbicide followed by 1HW, Pre-emergence followed by post emergence herbicide, Weed free by 3 hand weedings and Unweeded (control). The experiment was laid out in factorial RCB design with three replication. Pre-emergence application of prefer 18WP (Bensulfuran Methyl + Acetachlor) and post emergence herbicide Dhaman 300wp (Bispyribac sodium 18% + Bensulfuran methyl 12%) followed by one hand weeding effectively control all weeds (78-93%). In the experimental field, sedges and grass weeds were highly dominant over treatments. Based on summed dominance ratio (SDR), the most dominant weed species could be arranged in the order of Echinochloa crus-galli > Scirpus juncoides > Cynodon dactylon > Cyperus difformis > Marselia minuta > Monochoria vaginalis. Interaction of nitrogen levels and weeding methods had significant response on yield and yield components of hybrid rice. The highest (7.61 t ha-1) grain yield was obtained from the combination @ 180 kg N ha-1 with weed free treatments. Comparable higher grain yield was obtained from the combination of pre emergence herbicide of bensulfuranm methyl + acetachlor) + one hand weeding with 180 kg N ha (7.48 t ha-1) and the combination of pre + post-emergence herbicide (Bispyribac sodium 18% + Bensulfuran methyl 12%) with 180 kg N ha-1 (7.56t ha-1). The estimated optimum dose of nitrogen for Pre EH, Post EH and 3HW (weed free) were 173, 189.1 and 189.4 kg N ha-1 respectively for BRRI hybrid dhan3 under AWD irrigation system.Bangladesh Agron. A total of 20 Cobb-500 broiler chicks (day-old) were purchased from local hatchery (Nourish Poultry and Hatchery Ltd.) and after seven days of acclimatization chicks were randomly divided into two groups, A (n=10) and B (n=10). The group A was kept as a control and not treated. The group B was supplemented with papaya leaf and kalo jeera powder with feed and water. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight gain up to 5th weeks and hematological tests were performed at 35th days age of broiler to search for hematological changes between control (A) and treatment (B) groups. The initial body weight of groups A and B on 1st were 41.00±0.56 gm and 41.50±0.35 gm, respectively and after 35th day of experiment final body weight were 1470±57.35 gm and 1720±58.56 gm, respectively and economics of production were analyzed and found that net profit per broiler was Tk. 8.91 and Tk. 20.69, respectively. The treatment group B was recorded statistically significant (at 1% level) increased (17.00%) for live body weight than that of control group A. The hematological parameters total erythrocyte count (TEC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and hemoglobin (Hb) estimation value of treatment group shows significant difference, while hemoglobin estimation does not show significant difference from control group. The results suggest that better growth performance could be achieved in broilers supplemented with papaya leaf and kalo jeera seeds.

The treatment group B was recorded statistically significant (at 1% level) increased (16.97%) for live body weight than that of control group A. The hematological parameters total erythrocyte count (TEC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), packed cell volume (PCV) and hemoglobin (Hb) estimation value of treatment group shows significant difference, while hemoglobin (Hb) estimation does not show significant difference from control group. The results suggest that better growth performance could be achieved in broilers supplemented with tulsi leaf extract.
The Effect of lead acetate alone and in combination with whole milk on body weight gain and some biochemical parameters were carried out on a total of 15 (15 days old) male weaning Long- Evans strain rats. The rats were randomly divided into three equal groups, each consisting of five rats. Rats of group A were kept as control (without giving any treatment), group B received lead acetate alone @ 6mg/ml drinking water and group C received lead acetate @ 6mg/ml plus whole milk (Star ship®) 150 mg/ml drinking water. The result showed that body weight gain of control group per week per rat was found to increase but in treated group B, the body weight gain was found to decrease most significantly (P< 0.01) on day 56 while in group C, body weight was reduced significantly (P< 0.05) on day 56. The reducing body weight gain was less in group C than group B. A most significantly (P< 0.01) increased SGOT and SGPT values were observed in Group B but in group C, those count increased significantly (P< 0.05) on day 56 of experiment. From the study it was concluded that treatment with lead acetate at low doses has adverse effects on body growth and liver functions in experimental animals.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf, Nishyinda (Vitex nogundo) leaf and Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa) powdered supplementation in drinking water as a growth promoter in broiler chickens. A total of 40 day-old Cobb 40 broiler chicks were purchased from local hatchery (Nourish Poultry & Hatchery Ltd.) and after seven days of acclimatization chicks were randomly divided into two groups, A and B. The group A was kept as a control and not treated. The group B was supplemented with Neem, Nishyinda leaves and Turmeric dried powder with feed and water. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight gain up to 5th weeks and hematological tests were performed at 7th and 35th days age of broiler to search for hematological change between control (A) and treatment (B) groups. The initial body weight of groups A and B on 7th day of this experiment were 130±4.35 gm, respectively and after 35th day of experiment final body weight were 150±47.35 gm and 1600±58.56 gm, respectively; the net body weight gain were 1320±43.79 gm and 1470±54.25 gm, respectively and economics of production were analyzed and found that net profit per broiler was Tk. 17.24 and Tk. 30.00, respectively. The treatment group B was recorded statistically significant (at 1% level) increase for live body weight than that of control group A. The hematological difference, while Hb. estimation does not show significant difference from control group. The results suggest that better growth performance could be achieved in broilers supplemented with Neem, Nishyinda leaves and Turmeric rhizome extract.Res. Agric., Livest. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight gain upto 5th weeks and blood test was performed at 17th and 35th days age of broiler to observe the hematological changes between control (Group) and treatment (Group) group. The treatment group (Group A) recorded statistically non- significant for live body weight at 1st and 2nd weeks than that of control group (Group B) but found statistically significant at 3rd (p<0.01), 4th (P<0.05) and 5th (P<0.01) weeks of age and the Hematological parameters (TEC, PCV, Hb and ESR) showed statistically significant (p<0.01) difference as compared to control group.Res. The present study was conducted to estimate the garlic feed supplement on hematobiochemical parameters in lead exposed broiler chickens. 350 commercial broiler chickens were grouped into five, as T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4 consisting of 70 birds each, where T0 served as control. T1 was provided with lead acetate @ 100mg/kg body weight, T2 @ 100mg/kg lead acetate + 1% garlic supplement, T3 was fed @ 100mg/kg lead acetate + 2% garlic supplement and T4 @ 100mg/kg lead acetate + 4% garlic supplement .It was observed that Garlic supplementation in feed has got some ability to maintain normal values of erythrocytes, leukocytes, ALT, AST & Cholesterol parameters in spite of treatment with lead acetate. It was also found highly significant (P<0.001) in 2% garlic supplemented group (T3) compared to that of 1% (T2) and 4% (T4) garlic supplemented groups. The mean values of erythrocyte, Hb. and PCV significantly reduced from 2.217±0.020 to 2.062±0.047, 7.697±0.247 to 6.172±0.198 and 25.183±0.8122 to 23.532±1.001, respectively in group T1. The ameliorating effects of garlic in heavy metal lead revealed significantly (P<0.01) increased erythrocyte, hemoglobin and PCV values from 2.16±0.034 to 2.46±0.077, 8.362±0.262 to 10.44±0.26 and 23.64±0.90 to 30.68±0.75 in group T3, respectively. The mean values of ALT, AST and Cholesterol with lead Acetate @ 100mg/kg treatment were significantly (P<0.01) increased from 30.11±1.135 to 36.274±1.192, 51.162±1.422 to 103.641±2.023 and 152.34±17.47 to 364.28±12.33, respectively in T1 group on 42nd Day of treatment. The calculated significant mean values (mg/dl) of ALT, AST and Cholesterol were 24.51±0.63, 57.95±1.68 and 203.62±12.76, respectively in T3 group. The study was conducted to determine the efficacy of mixture of neem, turmeric and papaya leaf extract on growth performances of broilers. A total of 40 days-old broiler chicks, after 7 days acclimatization, were randomly divided into two equal groups. Group A (n=20) was reared as control group with normal feed and water, while group B (n=20) was supplemented with 2% neem, turmeric and papaya leaf extract @ 1 ml per liter of drinking water. No vaccination schedule was practiced and no antibiotics were added in rations. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight, weekly gain in weight, weekly feed consumption, feed efficiency and blood parameters of birds for five weeks. Body weight in the treatment group was significantly increased (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the blood parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV, ESR) between treatment and control groups. Supplementation of neem, turmeric and papaya leaf extract in the treatment group caused improvement in the feed efficiency as compared to that of control group. Treated birds had higher body weight, weekly gain in weight, feed consumption and feed efficiency. These results may be due to antimicrobial and anti-protozoal properties of neem, turmeric and papaya leaf extract which help to reduce the microbial load of birds and improved the feed consumption and feed efficiency of the birds. The study suggests that these medicinal plants may be used as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of neem leaf and ginger extracts as a growth promoter of broiler. A total of forty day-old broiler chicks were divided into four groups viz. I0, I1, I2 and I3 which were supplemented with a mixture of extracts from neem leaf and ginger @ 0 ml, 1 ml, 2 ml and 3 ml/liter of drinking water, respectively. Weekly observations were recorded for live body weight, weight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency and blood parameters of broilers for up to six weeks. The initial mean body weight of group I0, I1, I2 and I3 on first week chicks were 165 ± 5.00, 166 ± 3.00, 163 ± 3.00 and 164 ± 4.00 gm, respectively. At the end of the experiment (42 nd day) final mean body weight were 1550 ±10.00, 1720 ±10.00, 1651 ± 1.00 and 1782 ± 2.00 gm, respectively. The net body weight gains were 1385 ± 5.00, 1554 ± 7.00, 1488 ± 2.00 and 1618 ± 2.00 gm, respectively. Cost benefit analysis revealed that net profit per broiler was 24.04, 51.05, 35.12 and 56.64 taka, respectively. It is, therefore, concluded that the broiler production by using mixture of nee leaf and ginger extracts may be profitable with a safety health issue for human consumption.
Background: In modern era, treatment methods become diversified and developed day by day and organic medicine is one of the modern technology which also introduced in our poultry sector. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Thankuni (Centella asiatica) and Kalo Jeera (Nigella sativa) powdered supplementation as a growth promoter in broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 20 day-old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were randomly divided into two groups, A and B after seven days of acclimatization. The group A was kept as control and fed on only normal balanced diet. The group B was treatment group fed on normal diet with additional supplementation of Thankuni and Kalo Jeera powder in water. For observation of growth rate, live body weight was taken at first day and every seven days interval up to 5th weeks. Besides it hematological tests were performed at 35th days for searching hematological changes in both groups. Results: The initial body weight of groups A and Bon 1st day of this experiment were 43.00 ± 0.56 gm and 42.50 ± 0.35 gm, respectively and after 35th day of experiment final body weight were 1450 ± 57.35 gm and 1700 ± 58.56 gm (p<1%) respectively. The growth rate of treatment group B was 17.24% more (p<1%) than that of control birds. Although the dressing percentage of both group was equal but relative weight of heart, liver, spleen and pancreas were significantly higher (p<0.1) in treatment group indicates better flock health. Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) were 1.88 in treated birds and 2.28 in control birds was the sign of economy rate of production and were analyzed and found that net profit per broiler was Tk. 10.50 (0.12 USD) and Tk. 33.00 (0.4 USD), respectively. General blood parameters of treatment group were non-significantly higher than control group. Conclusions: The results suggest that better growth performance were achieved in broilers supplemented with Thankuni leaf and Kalo Jeera. Both of these two herbal medicines have antimicrobial, immunostimulatory, anti-stress, fungi static, insecticidal and liver tonic properties so that there were no mortality rate. Now it can be said that uses of Thankuni and Kalo Jeera has beneficiary effects in broiler production.
To investigate the effect of aqueous extract of Momordica charantia (karela) (M. charantia) fruits on blood glucose level, pancreatic weight changes and histopathology of pancreatic changes in the streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Thirty-six albino rats were used in the experiment; diabetes mellitus was induced in 30 adult albino rats, using intraperitoneal injection of 55 mg/kg STZ. Six non diabetic rats remained as control (T1). The diabetic rats were randomly assigned into five equal groups: diabetic control (T2) without any treatment, groups T3, T4, T5 and T6 were treated with aqueous extract of karela fruits daily at a doses of 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg and glibenclamide (5 mg/kg) up to 90 d, respectively. At Day 90, all rats were sacrificed, the pancreases of the rats were excised and processed. The results of this study indicate that aqueous extract of M. charantia fruits was able to reduce blood glucose level significantly compared with the diabetic control group (P<0.01). Histopathologically, STZ resulted severe necrotic changes in pancreatic islets. Tissues sections of pancreas in the treated groups showed regeneration of β cells and increased size of pancreatic islets. The present study suggests that oral feeding of M. charantia fruit juice has a significant anti-hyperglycemic effect and may have a role in the regeneration of the β cells in STZ diabetic rats.
The efficacy of tulsi (Ocimum sactum) and neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves extract as a growth promoter were studied in broiler. A total of 40 day-old broiler chicks were purchased from Kazi hatchery and after three days of acclimatization the chicks were randomly divided into four groups (n=10). No vaccination schedule was practiced and no antibiotic was added in ration of group A, B, C, and D respectively. Group A served control without any supplements while group B, C and D were supplemented with combination of tulsi and neem extract @ 1 ml, 2ml and 3 ml/liter of drinking water. Live body weight gain was recorded weekly up to 6th weeks and hematological studies were performed at 21st and 42nd day of experiments. At the end of 42nd day of experiment final body weight of group A, B, C and D were 1561± 12.10 g, 1698± 12.87 g, 1608± 12.04 g and 1763± 13.28 g, respectively. The birds of group D utilized their feed more efficiently among the treatment groups (p<0.05). The net body weight gain were, 1533± 11.98 g, 1443± 11.32 g and 1588± 12.10 g in treated groups compared to control group (1393± 11.07 g ) and total net profit per broiler was 19.08, 40.10, 20.68 and 45.07 Taka , respectively. Hematological parameterss (TEC, PCV, Hb and ESR) were not significantly changed among the treated and control group suggesting no side effects of herbal extracts in broiler. Lead has long been recognized as a poison to living organisms, with negative effects on general health, reproduction, behavior and mental growth. Drinking water, surface water, industrial waste water, agricultural soil and egg samples were collected to determine the presence of lead. Twenty samples (3-5 g) from each category were collected and detected by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (FAAS) to detect the natural deposition of lead. The analysis of variance of mean lead concentration among different samples in different locations differed significantly (P<0.01). The highest mean values of lead accumulation in drinking water, industrial waste water and agricultural soil samples, collected from Norshindi district was detected as 0.064±0.021ml/kg, 95.735±9.593ml/kg and 119.033±9.853 mg/kg respectively. The highest mean value of lead (0.622±0.096 mg/L) in surface water was significantly (P<0.01) present in Narayangonj district and significantly (P<0.01) higher than other selected areas. Analysis of variance of data on chicken eggs revealed significant (P<0.001) difference in egg albumen, egg yolk and egg shell. The highest mean values of lead were 0.066±0.003mg/kg, 0.089±0.010mg/kg and 0.251±0.032 mg/kg in egg albumen, egg yolk and egg shell in Norshindi. The natural accumulation of lead in Drinking water, egg albumen and egg yolk was found at tolerance level but the cumulative accumulation may bring the serious public health hazards.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v12i1.20468 Bangl. Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis bacterium and an acute infectious febrile septicemic disease of all warm-blooded animals including human. It is a disease of major economic importance in ruminant specially in goat characterized principally by a rapid fatal course followed by sudden death. The present investigation was under taken to determine the biochemical characterization of anthrax spore vaccine bacteria and to determine the immunological response in goat after anthrax vaccination. Anthrax vaccine was collected from local government veterinary hospital, Mymensingh which was prepared by LRI. The goats were selected from different regions of Bangladesh. The used methods were culture of vaccine bacterial sediment in different media, staining of bacteria with Gram’s stain, and sugar fermentation tests for biochemical characterization of anthrax vaccine bacteria. Slide agglutination test and indirect ELISA tests were performed for immunological response after vaccination. Morphologically anthrax vaccine bacteria was gram positive rod shaped or short chain in anthrax vaccine sediment, culture in nutrient agar and nutrient broth. The anthrax vaccine bacteria fermented three sugars (dextrose, maltose and sucrose) and produced only acid but did not ferment two sugars (lactose and mannitol). Immunuglobulin of collected serum (Day0, Day30 and Day90) also agglutinated anthrax antigen on Day 30 and Day 90 of post immunization and onwards. Indirect ELISA provided evidence that immunization of captive and free range goat generated level of anti anthrax 1gG antibody response at Day 0 (OD Value 0.5474±0.0466) of immunization and reached its peak at Day 30 (OD Value 0.9604±0.0936) and maintained that level up to the end of the study (Day 90, OD Value 1.217±0.1129). After vaccination, immunological response was found in goat. However whether this immune response can protect natural anthrax infection need to be evaluated through challenge dose of fields isolates of Bacillus anthracis in future. The study was conducted to assess the therapeutic competence of garlic (Allium sativum) in lead (Pb) exposed chickens. The experimental birds (n=350) were grouped into T0 (as control), T1, T2, T3 and T4. The birds of group T1 was provided with lead acetate at 100 mg/kg body weight. Group T2 had lead acetate at 100 mg/kg b.wt. + 1% garlic supplement, whereas group T3 was fed with lead acetate at 100 mg/kg b.wt. + 2% garlic supplement, and group T4 had lead acetate at 100 mg/kg b.wt. + 4% garlic supplement. The mean values (mg/dL) of uric acid, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, and blood glucose in the birds of group T1 were significantly increased (p<0.01) on day 42 of post-treatment. Elevation of these parameters was suggestive for the pathological involvement of different organs like liver, kidney, muscles. Statistical analysis of variance indicated that lead acetate at 100 mg/kg b.wt. + 2% garlic supplement (T3) resulted significant (p<0.01) ameliorative effect on the biochemical parameters as compared to the group T2 and T4. In conclusion, potency of garlic in reversion of the values of the biochemical properties in Pb exposed chickens was close to the normal levels of the values.
The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infections and the gross pathological lesions produced by them were studied from February 2012 to January 2013 in the Department of Pharmacology of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. In this study, a total of 320 indigenous chickens aged ranging from 2 to 4 months were examined to identify the different types of gastrointestinal helminth infections in indigenous chickens. During routine examination, six species of helminth parasites were recorded, of which five species of nematodes such as Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum, Capillaria spp, Acuaria hamulosa and Dispharynx spiralis; and one species was cestode called Raillietina tetragona. The highest prevalence was observed for Ascaridia galli (41.56%) followed in descending order by Raillietina tetragona (19.68%), Heterakis gallinarum (15.62%), Acuaria hamulosa (8.75%), Capillaria spp. (4.68% ) and Disopharinx spiralis (1.56%). The gross pathological lesions were observed in case of Acuaria hamulosa and Heterakis gallinarum infection. In case of Acuaria hamulosa infection keratinization of gizzard mucosa and cross section of adult Acuaria hamulosa were seen along with marked infiltration of neutrophils. The results of this study suggest that both nematodes and cestodes are highly prevalent in indigenous chickens in the studied area.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v12i2.21275 Bangl. J. Vet. Med.
