Food security remains as a formidable challenge to address in Southeast Asia. Despite agriculture being one of the major economic sectors of the region, undernourishment rates remain high and have continued rising in recent times. This paper presents the system design and prototype implementation of a remote monitoring system for Organic Black Soldier Flies (BSF) farming. The system is designed according to the local conditions of rural farms in Sarawak, Malaysia. Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies are employed in a star topology at the device level, funneling data to a central cloud service for data storage and visualization. The results from an experimental deployment of the system are presented.
Precision agriculture has seen growing adoption by farmers as it offers great benefits in terms of productivity, traceability and efficient operation. The areas of application include crop management, livestock management as well as other agricultural product management. This paper presents the development and implementation of compost monitoring system that is enabled by Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies. This system is designed to be deployed in an organic farm in Serian district, Sarawak, Malaysia. The design of the system setup considers the field conditions at the farm. The two-level (sensor node and gateway) approach in developing the system, combined with the use of LoRa communication and MiFi device permits users to monitor the compost parameters remotely. The experimental results are presented.
The development of the multi-agent negotiation system is receiving much attention nowadays. Although there exist works like negotiation architecture, model based negotiation, negotiation algorithms, it is still insufficient to design and develop an agent based negotiation system. Thus, this research is carried out with an intention to alleviate the gap identified by proposing an alternative approach through the use of agent negotiation patterns. Agent patterns are used to document the multi-agent system development experience and to provide a generic solution to recurring problems within a problem domain. Through that, the agent's conceptual designs are reusable to expedite development process and to provide a structured guideline to the development of the multi-agent negotiation system. Altogether, nine patterns are derived for different negotiation strategies. To evaluate and demonstrate the reusability of the agent negotiation patterns derived, two patterns are used in the practical implementation of a case study of an eCommerce system, restaurant reservation system. It showcase the feasibility of the patterns in designing and developing multi-agent negotiation system.
This paper presents the post-mortem report upon completion of the Long Lamai e-commerce development project. Some weaknesses with regards to the current software modelling approach are identified and an alternative role-based approach is proposed. We argue that the existing software modelling technique is not suitable for modelling, making it difficult to establish a good contract between stakeholders causing delays in the project delivery. The role-based approach is able to explicitly highlight the responsibilities among stakeholders, while also forming the contract agreement among them leading towards sustainable ICT4D.
Shared single display groupware that enables collaboration among people from different cultures and social practices encourages peer learning and teaching, whilst strengthening communication skills. It has been successfully evaluated in remote schools in China and India. Due to this, the question arises whether it can be deployed in rural schools or semi-urban schools in Sarawak? What are the issues and challenges? What are the impact of this technology among the students and teachers? This paper investigates the deployment of shared single display groupware in rural and semi-urban schools in Sarawak (one of the Malaysian states). We introduce a shared single display application, RimbaIlmu, in one semi-urban school and one rural school and conduct qualitative analysis from the observations among the participants. Observational data has shown that RimbaIlmu is able to stimulate collaboration between different genders; an engaging technology among students; a tool for group and individual assessment; a tool to facilitate leadership skills; fun to play with; allows ease of lab management and control; enabling novices to learn computers; promoting membership in collaboration learning and finally provide environment for task accomplishment with minimum teacher intervention.
The unprecedented growth in information technology and information explosion, with more and more data in electronic forms has put the computer into the hands of users with very little technical knowledge. The fact that the systems are not inherently immune, and that open up a number of vulnerabilities, leading to potential attacks, and the most prominent is in the form of open ports. This paper attempts to do a survey on common user computing devices including start devices to discover open ports and thereby explore vulnerabilities that can lead to potential attack targets.
Formal notations and mathematics are used in several areas to capture the requirements and express the functionalities of the software. This paper focuses on the use of formal methods to model the real world environment in a Malaysian plywood production manufacturing industry. The formal methods are used to describe abstractly the plywood production system in the aspect of its behavior but not precisely the way the system is programmed. Other informal description does the same, but with a formal description we can determine (in theory) whether or not a real system satisfies its description and functionalities. Because of this, precise analysis on the description itself can be performed and it exposes design decisions which otherwise might not be identified until the system prototype is being developed.
The paper aims at investigating on how information technology can be best applied to support small and mid-sized manufacturing enterprise development. The investigation carried out falls into three phases. First, the investigation emphasizes on the problem domain understanding, in which case, involves the modeling of the manufacturing enterprise. Second, the requirements of software systems that serve as manufacturing processes for the domain of the manufacturing enterprise are captured and represented in formal specification. Third, based on the formal specification, the development of the software systems is carried out. These phases are demonstrated with the analysis of a case study of plywood production in the KTS Timber Industries (Malaysia) Bhd. The presentation of this paper will include a demonstration of the prototype for the plywood production system. The prototype was created by the staff of the Faculty of Information Technology at University Malaysia Sarawak.
