INTRODUCTION:This Experience Report explores the mobilisation of mental health professionals and students who responded to the catastrophic floods in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, in 2024. Triggered by prolonged rainfall and exacerbated by urbanisation and the influence of El Niño, this event caused unprecedented devastation, with over 615,000 individuals displaced and severe socioeconomic impacts. This paper aims to describe the experiences of mental health professionals and students involved in psychosocial care provided to victims between May and July 2024 in rescue sites and shelters at Porto Alegre. METHOD:Drawing from the collective reflections of a multidisciplinary team, this report highlights the challenges, adaptations, and lessons learned during psychosocial interventions conducted in rescue sites and shelters. The 18 participants included were psychologists, psychiatrists, nursing students, and faculty members from prominent academic institutions, providing a diverse range of perspectives. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire distributed via Google Forms, data analysis used thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) to interpret the open-ended questionnaire responses. RESULTS:The report identifies significant gaps in disaster-specific planning and training, revealing how the absence of clear protocols led to disorganisation during initial responses. Despite challenges, mental health teams adapted flexibly and demonstrated resilience, implementing interventions that addressed acute emotional symptoms, grief, and long-term psychological impacts. Vulnerable populations, including low-income and racialised groups, faced compounded risks due to systemic inequities and inadequate public policies. Mental health professionals themselves experienced substantial emotional strain, navigating their dual roles as responders and affected community members. CONCLUSION:The findings emphasised the critical need to integrate mental health into disaster planning, prioritise training in psychosocial care, and adopt community-focused approaches to enhance collective resilience. This report contributes to disaster response discussions by providing insights into the lived experiences of mental health responders. It offers recommendations to strengthen preparedness and response frameworks, ensuring equitable and sustainable recovery for affected populations.
Forensic psychology has been consolidating itself as a specialty in the legal field, including in the scope of labor law, with growing controversies about the mental illness of workers. This article is the result of a qualitative documentary research, which aimed to analyze judicial decisions related to mental disorders and their respective causal link in labor expertise in Brazil. We analyzed 59 decisions published on the website of the Regional Labor Court (TRT) of the Fourth Region between 2019 and 2020. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. A significant presence of occupational diseases and claims for moral and material damages was observed. For the establishment of the causal link/concause, identified in 59.32% of the cases, the relevance of expert evidence was verified. The participation of the psychologist in such procedures proved to be inexpressive compared to medical experts. Possibilities and limitations related to the psychologist’s professional performance in labor expertise are discussed
The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of Brazilian workers (N = 1.096) regarding the approach of working from home (WFH) during the COVID-19 pandemic. An exploratory quantitative research study was conducted in which data collection was managed through an online survey. Sociodemographic and labor aspects were investigated and the Satisfaction With Life scale, Work Satisfaction questionnaire, and World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref (WHOQOL-bref) were applied. Home office benefits identified through the survey included an increase in flexibility and availability of schedules, autonomy, and solidarity between coworkers. Harmful aspects indicated were increased work hours, interruptions, isolation, decreased feeling of belonging, and of quality of communications. Higher levels of education, fixed-term employment contracts, support for childcare and the option of working in an isolated space were linked to better averages on the evaluation scale. The results of this study support the existing literature, and the importance of promoting programs focused on employee health. Keywords: employee health, working from home, COVID-19 pandemic.
This mixed design study aimed to verify associated factors and predictors of common mental disorders (CMD) (quantitative phase), and to know the perceptions (qualitative phase) of federal bailiffs in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil regarding the work context and possible relationships with health-disease processes. In the quantitative phase, 59 bailiffs answered the following questionnaires: Sociodemographic-Labor, Work Context Assessment, Negative Acts, and Self Reporting Questionnaire. In the qualitative, 19 participants were interviewed. Bivariate statistical analyses and Poisson regression were performed, as well as thematic analysis for processing qualitative data. The prevalence of CMD was 40.7%, and it was associated with moral harassment, socio-professional relationships, working conditions and organization. Qualitative and quantitative data converged to indicate psychosocial risk factors for mental health (such as lack of recognition and weakened socio-professional relationships). The professional category has been exposed to situations that potentially generate work-related suffering/illness, and the participants' perceptions were congruent with measured variables. Keywords: occupational health, common mental disorders, working environment.
Workplace bullying (WB) is associated with Common mental disorders (CMD) in high-income countries, but there is a lack of evidence relating to this subject in low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between bullying and CMD in Brazil. A cross-sectional study with 907 judicial civil servants from Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, was carried out. WB was measured by the Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ-r) and CMD by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Logistic regression was used to analyse data and test hypotheses. The overall prevalence of CMD was 32.8%, while the overall prevalence of bullying was 18.3%. WB was strongly associated with CMD, even after controlling for confounders. After adjustment for sociodemographic, personality and occupational confounders, weekly and daily exposures to negative acts increased 4.32 (95% CI: 2.00-9.33) and 6.80 (95% CI: 3.42-13.51) times the risk of CMD, respectively. Considering the operational definition, bullied workers had a 3.45 (95% CI: 2.26-5.25) higher risk of CMD. The results are consistent with studies from high-income countries. Different ways of categorising exposure to WB and testing association with CMD are suggested. Interventions to prevent bullying, focusing on work processes and psychosocial factors at work, could reduce the risk of mental health problems.
Civil servants from the Judiciary have been exposed to management models that bring risks to their mental health.Associations between the occupational context of workers from the Federal Judiciary of Rio Grande do Sul and Common Mental Disorders (CMD) were analyzed.Participants included 2,063 workers who responded to: sociodemographic and labor questionnaire, Work Context Assessment Scale, and Self-Reporting Questionnaire. We ran bivariate analyses and multivariate Poisson Regression.General prevalence of CMD was 27.2%.There was strong, positive association between work context and CMD.Workers exposed to severe work organization (WO) and severe socioprofessional relations (SR) presented 3.95-fold higher prevalence of CMD, compared to those with satisfactory WO and SR.Regarding the independent relationship between work context dimensions and CMD, associations remained strong, with prevalence up to 2.5 times higher, suggesting that the Judiciary's work context, in critical or severe situations, can generate psychological suffering.

Burnout syndrome (BS) consists in a response to chronic labor problems that becomes from physical and mental illnesses of worker and it may result in absence from work. Health professionals would be a vulnerable category of BS due to the characteristics of care work and management models. An observational analytic cross section was conducted with 217 workers from two primary health districts of Porto Alegre/RS, Brazil, to determine the prevalence and predictors of BS. It was used: demographic and labor questionnaire, SBI (which assesses BS Profile 1 and BS Profile 2) and SRQ - 20 (which assesses common mental disorders - CMD). Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis and simple/multiple linear regression. The results indicated that 18% of professionals present BS profile 1 and 11%, profile 2. Predictors for BS profile 1 were: CMD, fatigue, length of employment, having children, only work, living in Porto Alegre and work at an ordinary primary healthcare unit. For BS profile 2 were similiar, except for the variables: city and kind of local place. The high prevalence of BS in the sample shows the need of institutions of primary healthcare to conduct prevention and promotion health projects among their own workers.
Introduction Workplace bullying has been described as an important determinant for many health outcomes, such as depression, suicidal ideation and sleeping problems. However its role as a possible determinant of musculoskeletal disorders is still on discussion. We aimed to evaluate the independent association between workplace bullying and neck/upper limb musculoskeletal pain in a sample of Brazilian civil servants. Methods Cross-sectional study with a sample of 1616 workers from the Brazilian Federal Judiciary. The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ-r) was used to measure bullying at work and an adapted version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to evaluate neck and upper limb musculoskeletal pain. Poisson and logistic regressions were used to test and estimate associations of interest, controlling for confounders. Results The overall prevalence of frequent (weekly or daily) neck and upper limb musculoskeletal pain was 49.9%. The prevalence of workplace bullying was 17.0%. In the regression analysis controlling for social, demographic and occupational confounders, workers exposed to bullying (weekly or daily negative acts) presented a 2.04-fold higher prevalence of neck and upper limb musculoskeletal pain than those who did not suffer bullying (p<0.001). Discussion Our findings suggest that workplace bullying can be an independent risk factor for musculoskeletal pain in workers. New longitudinal studies are needed in order elucidate the role of workplace bullying in determining occupational musculoskeletal disorders.
Introduction Workplace bullying has been currently described as one of the main psychosocial factors at work that reflects in workers’ health. Its determination has been increasingly discussed in literature. We aimed to evaluate the association between work organisation and bullying in a Brazilian Civil Servants sample, in order to understand this phenomenon. Methods Cross-sectional study with a sample of 2073 workers from the Brazilian Federal Judiciary. Work Context Assessment Scale (EACT) was used to evaluate dimensions of work organisation (OT), working conditions (CT) and interpersonal relationships (RSS). The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ-r) was used to measure bullying. Poisson and logistic regression models were used to test associations of interest, controlling for confounders. Results The overall prevalence of bullying (exposure to a weekly negative act) was 17.0%. In the regression analyses controlling for social, demographic and occupational confounders, all factors of the work context, when classified as severe, were strongly associated with bullying (p<0.01), increasing the prevalence of the outcome in 10.4 (OT), 3.6 (CT) and 11.0 (RS) times. After including working context as a covariate in the model, in order to verify the isolated effect of each dimension, severe OT and RS remained strongly associated with bullying (Prevalence ratio=4.8 and 6.5, respectively, p<0.01). Discussion These findings corroborate the hypothesis that work organisation is one of the main determinants of workplace bullying. Labour characteristics of this public service and the quality of instruments support an adequate temporality between exposure and outcome. Interventions to eliminate bullying and protect workers health should focus on work organisation and work processes.
Introduction Bullying has been described in literature as an important determinant for workers mental health. We aimed to evaluate the association between workplace bullying and common mental disorders in a sample of Brazilian civil servants. Methods Cross-sectional study with a sample of 1883 workers from the Brazilian Federal Judiciary. The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ-r) was used to measure bullying at work and the Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was used to evaluate Common Mental Disorders (CMD). Poisson and logistic regressions were used to test associations of interest, controlling for confounders. Results The overall prevalence of CMD was 27.1%. The prevalence of workplace bullying was 17.0%. In the regression analysis controlling for social, demographic and occupational confounders, workers exposed to occasional bullying (now and then or monthly negative acts) was associated with a 2.17-fold higher prevalence of CMD (p<0.001). Subjects exposed to bullying frequently (weekly or daily negative acts) presented a 4.78-fold higher prevalence of CMD than those who did not suffer bullying (p<0.001). Discussion Very few studies on the association between bullying and mental health in low and middle income countries are published. Our findings corroborate the results of longitudinal studies from high-income countries, where bullying appears to be an important determinant of worse mental health. Prevention actions to eliminate bullying in organisations are urgent, in order to preserve workers mental health. Civil servants are at high risk of being exposed to bullying, worsening their health condition.
