Digital innovation is a complex process in which actors seek to create new value pathways by combining digital resources in a layered modular architecture. While IS scholarship has a rich tradition of research on developing and implementing digital artefacts within intra-organisational contexts, our understanding of knowledge integration across distributed innovation networks is nascent and under-theorised. This is an important area of research given the rising importance of digital innovation networks and the challenges faced in integrating specialised knowledge, especially given the greater diversity, speed, reach, and scope made possible by digital technologies. Drawing on in-depth case study findings from a health IoT project involving multiple organisations and disciplines, we explore how knowledge is integrated across boundaries during the initiation stage of a digital innovation network. Our findings point to boundaries related to the digital platform’s organising vision, resource allocation, delivery roadmap, technical architecture, and intellectual property, to name but a few challenges. We then reveal five socio-cognitive modes of knowledge integration which actors strategically enact to cross syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic boundaries: Signalling, Assembling, Contesting, Discounting, and Finalising. The choice of mode depends on the perceived knowledge status (‘what they know’) and social status (‘who they are’) of network actors, which highlight the salience of both social and cognitive dependencies for knowledge integration. We further discuss the contribution of design objects for overcoming differences and distinctions between specialist actors in a digital innovation network.
In this paper, we use metaphors to capture the experiences of a group of five PhD supervisors (who have supervised) and three PhD graduates (who have completed) a Publication-Based Thesis (P-BT) within the Information Systems (IS) discipline. Our analysis leads to the emergence of five themes referred to as ART-IQ (Ambidexterity, Responsibility, Trust, Integrity, Quality). These five themes shine a light on the PhD supervisor/candidate relationship dynamic and are also core in theorising PhD supervision (in a P-BT context) as a sustainable leadership practice. Overall, we argue that viewing PhD supervision as sustainable leadership (in a P-BT context) suggests that the IQ (Integrity, Quality) is only achievable if the ART (Ambidexterity, Responsibility, Trust) elements are present.
In response to climate change, nations have been tasked with reducing energy consumption and lessening their carbon footprint through targeted actions. While digital technologies can support this goal, our understanding of energy practices in a private household context remains nascent. This challenge is amplified by the 'invisible' nature of users' interaction with energy systems and the impact of unconscious habits. Our objective is to explore how touchpoints embedded in digital sustainability platforms shape energy-efficiency behaviours among users. Building on data from semi-structured interviews and a two-hour co-creation workshop with 25 energy experts in the ECO2 project, we first identify three user representations of relevance to such platforms: energy-unaware, living in denial, and energy-aware and active. Our findings suggest that 'static' user representations (based on user demographics and average consumption) are giving way to socio-cognitive representations that follow users' journeys in energy efficiency. We then develop a set of design principles to promote sustainable energy behaviours through digital sustainability platforms across user-owned, social/external, brand-owned, and partner-owned touchpoints. An analysis of user feedback from the ECO2 project shows support for our design principles across users' journeys. Of 62 respondents covering all three representations, 76% of them intended to "implement changes in terms of energy consumption and energy efficiency".
Digital leadership involves dealing with complex challenges and anticipating trends that arise from emerging technologies. Amid the accelerated pace of digital transformation, consequences such as technostress have become apparent to organizations and their leaders. Emotional intelligence (EI) is an essential characteristic for enabling digital leaders to hone the necessary skills to lessen employees’ technostress by developing higher levels of consciousness of emotions—both one’s own and those of others. By synthesizing research-based knowledge of EI and leadership, we contribute to a broader understanding of competency requirements for digital transformation by bringing employees and the role of digital leadership through EI into the picture. This article also presents new EI strategies for digital leaders to mitigate employee technostress in digital transformation via communication, transparency, and trust.
PurposeSocial media platforms are a pervasive technology that continues to define the modern world. While social media has brought many benefits to society in terms of connection and content sharing, numerous concerns remain for the governance of social media platforms going forward, including (but not limited to) the spread of misinformation, hate speech and online surveillance. However, the voice of citizens and other non-experts is often missing from such conversations in information systems literature, which has led to an alleged gap between research and the everyday life of citizens.Design/methodology/approachThe authors address this gap by presenting findings from 16 h of online dialog with 25 citizens on social media platform governance. The online dialog was undertaken as part of a worldwide consultation project called "We, the internet", which sought to provide citizens with a voice on a range of topics such as "Digitalization and Me," "My Data, Your Data, Our Data" and "A Strong Digital Public Sphere." Five phases of thematic analysis were undertaken by the authors to code the corpus of qualitative data.FindingsDrawing on the Theory of Communicative Action, the authors discuss three dialogical processes critical to citizen discourse: lifeworld reasoning, rationalization and moral action. The findings point toward citizens' perspectives of current and future issues associated with social media platform governance, including concerns around the multiplicity of digital identities, consent for vulnerable groups and transparency in content moderation. The findings also reveal citizens' rationalization of the dilemmas faced in addressing these issues going forward, including tensions such as digital accountability vs data privacy, protection vs inclusion and algorithmic censorship vs free speech.Originality/valueBased on outcomes from this dialogical process, moral actions in the form of policy recommendations are proposed by citizens and for citizens. The authors find that tackling these dark sides of digitalization is something too important to be left to "Big Tech" and equally requires an understanding of citizens' perspectives to ensure an informed and positive imprint for change.
Control is necessary for aligning the actions of management (i.e., controllers) and subordinates (i.e., controlees) around common goals. The enactment of control often fails in practice; however, as controlee perceptions may not match those of controllers, leading to a myriad of possible outcomes. Through an interpretive case study of two inter‐organisational IT projects, we reveal how controlees' appraisals and responses to controls are context‐dependent and play out across multiple levels (e.g., personal, professional, project and organisational contexts). We build on a coping perspective of IS controls to theorise the ‘coping strategies’ that controlees pursued relevant to these contexts and the ‘coping routes’ followed when combining different consecutive coping strategies. We find the process need not end with the selection of a single strategy but can potentially continue as both the controller and controlees make ongoing readjustments. While Behavioural Control Theory traditionally assumes the presence of a single control hierarchy, interorganisational IT projects are multi‐level entities that amalgamate different structures and cultures. Our study moves beyond the existing assumptions of Behavioural Control Theory to discuss how a controller's choice of activities shapes the salience of different contexts in controlee appraisals.
Green IS platforms provide new opportunities for educating users on how they can reduce energy consumption in the household and lessen their carbon footprint through targeted actions. However, our understanding of how to design green IS platforms for the promotion of sustainable energy behaviours over time and among user groups remains nascent. This challenge is amplified by the ‘invisible’ nature of users' patterns of interaction with energy systems and the environmental impact of unconscious habits in private households. Our study presents findings from a 36-month EU project which designed an e-learning platform to help users adopt energy-efficient behaviours. Building on semi-structured interviews and a two-hour focus group with 26 subject matter experts, we identify three user representations: energy unaware, living in denial, and energy aware and active. We conclude by developing a touchpoint model to discuss the digital interventions needed to promote sustainable energy behaviours across user-owned, social/external, market-owned and company-owned touchpoints.
Current literature has increased our knowledge of particular aspects of Workforce Transformation (WT), yet we need a comprehensive picture of its characteristics within a Digital Transformation (DT) context. Therefore, the objective of this review paper is to present the defining characteristics of WT. We fulfil this objective through a systematic review of 70 empirical papers published in leading journals listed on the CABS Academic Journal Guide (between 2010 and 2022). Following an inductive open coding approach, we identified six characteristics of WT: (1) 'Actors and Digital Competency'; (2) 'Digital Culture'; (3) 'Digitally Engaged Workspace'; (4) 'Empowerment, Engagement, and Motivation'; (5) 'Improvisation and Collaborative Visioning'; and (6) 'Transformational Leadership and Governance'. Based on these characteristics, we detail a future research agenda that proposes the need to examine the relationship between WT characteristics and DT outcomes.
Patient-held Health Information Technologies (HIT) can reduce medical error by improving communication between patients and the healthcare team. Despite the proposed benefits, the roll-out of patient-held HIT solutions remains nascent, leaving considerable gaps in our understanding of the adoption challenges inherent. This paper adopts Normalisation Process Theory to study the factors which support or impede the adoption and "normalisation" of patient-held HIT, particularly across the primary-secondary care interface. The authors conducted an in-depth case study of HIT adoption across four GP practices, and the wards of a 350 bed hospital. 35 semi-structured interviews were completed. Findings point towards both user-specific and network-specific factors as significant challenges to normalisation across primary-secondary care. This includes factors related to interactional workability, skill set workability, relational integration, and contextual integration. We also discuss challenges specific to patient-held HIT adoption e.g., understanding the patient/clinician experience, supporting informal clinician networks, and spanning across IT boundaries.
Technical Debt (TD) is a widely discussed metaphor in IT practice focused on increased short-term benefit in exchange for long-term 'debt'.While it is primarily individuals or groups inside IT departments who make the decisions to take on TD, we find that the effects of TD stretch across the entire organisation.Decisions to take on TD should therefore concern a wider group.However, business leaders have traditionally lacked awareness of the effects of what they perceive to be 'technology decisions'.To facilitate TD as groupbased decision-making, we review existing literature to develop a typology of the wider impacts of TD.The goal is to help technologists, non-technologists, and academics have a broader and shared understanding of TD and to facilitate more participatory and transparent technology-related decision making.We extend the typology to include a wider 'outside in' perspective and conclude by suggesting areas for further research.
Shared understanding is essential in interorganizational projects to integrate the divergent knowledge of individual team members and support collaborative knowledge building. This can nevertheless be a challenging undertaking in interorganizational projects as team members must continuously negotiate differences in their organizational and professional backgrounds during project work. In this paper, we explore how interorganizational IT project teams deal with sources of 'fragmentation' in their understanding, explicating the theoretical and practical implications that these have for project management. Our study is needed to explore the increasingly complex and emergent nature of interorganizational project management today where neither goals nor the means of attainment are known with precision at a project's launch. We analyze interpretive case study findings from an 8-month IT project involving diverse organizations from industry, academia, and healthcare. Based on our findings, we develop a framework which highlights the relationship between three sources of fragmentation of understanding (interpersonal, technical, and contextual) across key project activities. We contribute towards project management literature by revealing how these sources of fragmentation might be overcome through framing project activities (the problem, method, and solution formulation) differently. While fragmentation may characterize any, or all, of these key activities, it is not without remedy.
The diverse backgrounds of distributed team members can pose unique challenges during decision-making processes. Notable of these is the gradual emergence of social identities, where individuals seek to form new social groupings within the temporal context of a project. However, our understanding of social identity within distributed teams remains nascent. Drawing on Social Identity Theory (SIT) and in-depth case study findings, we investigate the impact of social identity on decision-making in a distributed healthcare systems development team. Contrary to SIT, we see the dissolution of distinct social groupings and rise of individualism within the project. Based on our findings, we discover five inhibitors which can impede social identification in distributed teams: role ambiguity, absence of a collective vision, transfer of ownership, lack of shared history, and incompatible personalities. We extend SIT to include antecedents of collective identities (e.g. distinctiveness, prestige, salience of out-group), as well as inhibitors which foster individualism.
This article provides a systematic review of existing research on problematic smartphone use (PSU) to guide other researchers in search of relevant studies, and to propose areas for future research. In total, 293 studies were analyzed leading to the development of an overview model in the field of PSU, presenting findings on demographic factors, explanations for smartphone use and why this use becomes problematic, consequences of PSU, and how such use can be corrected. In addition, we considered in which contexts, with which methods, and with which theoretical lenses this stream of research has been studied to date. Smartphone use is most often explained by the smartphone design, and users' emotional health and their ability to control smartphone use. Our review suggests that people who are young, female, and highly educated are more prone to PSU. Emotional health issues are the most frequently identified consequence of PSU. Strategies for correcting PSU fall into three categories: information-enhancing, capacity-enhancing, and behavior reinforcement strategies. The studies on PSU are most often conducted using quantitative surveys with university and college participants considering their personal smartphone use. Whereas a variety of theoretical frameworks have been adopted to investigate PSU, they are often related to identifying factors explaining use and problematic use, and more seldom to analyze the findings. A future research agenda for PSU is proposed consisting of seven key research questions which can be investigated by researchers going forward.
Purpose The dropout rates of open e-learning platforms are often cited as high as 97%, with many users discontinuing their use after initial acceptance. This study aims to explore this anomaly through the lens of affordances theory, revealing design–reality gaps between users' diverse goals and the possibilities for action provided by an open IT artefact. Design/methodology/approach A six-month case study was undertaken to investigate the design implications of user-perceived affordances in an EU sustainability project which developed an open e-learning platform for citizens to improve their household energy efficiency. Thematic analysis was used to reveal the challenges of user continuance behaviour based on how an open IT artefact supports users in achieving individual goals (e.g. reducing energy consumption in the home) and collective goals (lessening the carbon footprint of society). Findings Based on the findings, the authors inductively reveal seven affordances related to open e-learning platforms: informing, assessment, synthesis, emphasis, clarity, learning pathway and goal-planning. The findings centre on users' perception of these affordances, and the extent to which the open IT artefact catered to the goals and constraints of diverse user groups. Open IT platform development is further discussed from an iterative and collaborative perspective in order to explore different possibilities for action. Originality/value The study contributes towards research on open IT artefact design by presenting key learnings on how the designers of e-learning platforms can bridge design–reality gaps through exploring affordance personalisation for diverse user groups. This can inform the design of open IT artefacts to help ensure that system features match the expectations and contextual constraints of users through clear action-oriented possibilities.
