The speed and scale of landscape transformation in New Zealand was almost immediately apparent to British geographer Kenneth Cumberland on his appointment to Canterbury University College in 1938. His efforts culminated in the nationally and internationally well-regarded book 'Soil Erosion in New Zealand: A Geographical Reconnaissance (1944a)', which paired with his significant public advocacy for reform contributed to the passage of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Act, 1941 and was followed by research into high country land management for the North Canterbury Catchment Board. Over the last half century, Cumberlanda's understanding of soil erosion and soil conservation has in various ways been a 'forgotten'. With environmental historians and others pointing to how the past can help understand current environmental hazards, the loss of Cumberland's insights is at best unfortunate. This situation also suggests that some attention ought to be paid to understanding how 'forgetting' takes place. Using Cumberland as a case in point Baez Ullberg's (2018) ideas are deployed to appreciate how modernity, and by extension neo-liberalism, encourages and requires 'forgetting'.
After briefly positioning cultural geography work on place names in New Zealand, this article examines the origins, composition and activities of the Honorary Geographic Board (1924-1946) as a place naming authority, with particular attention paid to some of the key individuals involved.
Ben Garnier was appointed to teach geography at the University of Otago in 1945. The circumstances by which Garnier accepted the appointment and his role as a teacher, researcher and officer of the New Zealand Geographical Society until his departure in 1951 are examined.
The Indian population in New Zealand numbered less than 200 out of 1.1 million in 1916. The impact of the 1918 influenza pandemic on the population was never-the-less considerable. The paper, using various sources, seeks to identify the victims and their life courses while situating them within the standard historical accounts of the pandemic in New Zealand.
Abstract Reginald Ford, steward on Scott’s Discovery expedition, settled in New Zealand in 1905 and over the next two decades gave public lectures about his Antarctic experiences. Hitherto unrelated biographical details of Ford’s early life are assembled, and something of the character of his lantern slide lectures are reconstructed from various sources. The means by which Ford established his authority as a public speaker included his actual participation in the events he lectured about, his credentialling as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and the use of his own lantern slides. The “performative triangle” established around the audience, the lantern slide images, and Ford as lecturer, is examined via contemporary newspaper accounts and Ford’s other writings.
Virtual Issue: Celebrating 75 Years of Geography Teaching and Research at the University of Otago
Professor Kenneth Cumberland's presidential address at the first New Zealand geography conference in 1955 considered the achievements, aims and objectives of the discipline, which he positioned as a chorological science. This view of geography posed difficulties for the scope of historical geography, one of Cumberland's main areas of research. He addressed this problem in a second conference presentation, which has remained unpublished. This unpublished hitherto “lost manuscript” has been located and is examined with an eye to Cumberland's role as a disciplinary gatekeeper and boundary rider of New Zealand geography in the 1950s.
Using Hodder’s notion of “biography as method,” this paper examines the geographical endeavours of James Mackintosh Bell, Director of the New Zealand Geological Survey from 1905 to 1911, in New Zealand and Canada. Canadian born, Harvard trained, Bell has a significant place in the history of geology in New Zealand and mining geology in Canada, yet much of his writing was explicitly geographical in orientation. This essay analyses this body of work and its significance and limitations in adding to and disseminating knowledge of the geography of NZ, particularly. Bell credentialed himself geographically as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). The FRGS were important builders of geographical knowledge in NZ from the 1850s up to the establishment of university geography in the 1930s when formal geographical research commenced. Geologists were a numerically significant group amongst the NZ FRGS, distinctive in that they held university qualifications, and Bell was particularly wide ranging in his geographical interests.
Andrew Clark's (1949) Invasion of New Zealand by People, Plants and Animals is an exemplar of a "diachronic" or a "vertical themes" approach to the study of geographical change. Within scholarly geographical endeavors such as teaching, research, conferencing, and networking, the significance of book reviews has received limited attention. This paper considers the initial response of reviewers to Clark's monograph and how their reactions might be evaluated.

Biodynamic agriculture as a form of alternative agriculture dates to a series of lectures delivered by philosopher Rudolf Steiner in 1924 at Schloss Koberwitz (then in Germany now Kobierzyce in Poland). In 2019 biodynamic agriculture occupies some 190,000ha in 55 countries, though nearly half remains concentrated in Germany. This paper explores the introduction of biodynamic agriculture principles and practices to New Zealand in the 1920s and 1930s.
A second phase of New Zealand engagement with the International Geographical Union spans from 1956 to 1974. The nature of this engagement which culminated in the hosting of a Regional Conference in New Zealand in 1974 is the subject of this paper.
This chapter presents some macro-level data that chart the ebb and flow of the pastoral frontier between the wars before outlining the soldier settlement scheme and the land problem facing the government from 1917 into the 1920s. It deals with an assessment of soldier settlement on the bush frontier. By 1922, a sharp decline in primary export prices meant that many soldier settlers could not pay their rents or the interest owing on other government loans. At a regional level, soldier settlement and the bush frontier can be tracked statistically by examining the numbers and acreage of Ordinary Crown Land taken up under the Discharged Soldier Settlement Act. In terms of numbers of ex-soldier farmers and the areas involved, discharged soldier settlement contributed significantly to the final phase of the expansion of the pioneer farming frontier in New Zealand during the 1920s.
Animal-free animal food products, such as lab-grown meat and synthesized milk, are on the cusp of appearing in the supermarket. With the network of techno-science startups and university laboratories with venture capital, research grants, and donations flowing into them, the transition from techno-fantasy to actually existing industry could occur in the next few years. But the emerging animal-free food industry is a site of social and economic experimentation beyond what is occurring in the laboratory. A particular ethical and moral claim is at the center of this industry-in-potential, with it offering a food future free from the environmental degradation and animal cruelty of existing animal agriculture-led food chains, and it is around this claim that experiments with the construction of value are occurring. Drawing on assemblage theory, we argue that practices associated with things like veganism and beneficent techno-scientific research emerge from existing assemblages, including agrifood production networks, and get arranged and deployed in ways that are potentially economically productive in the making of this industry. This demonstrates how ethics are not just something folded back through the production process from the consumption end but are at the heart of how value is formed within it.

As a prequel to the centenary of the International Geographical Union in 2022, this paper discusses connections between New Zealand and the International Geographical Congresses as a site of knowledge creation from the 1870s up to the mid-20th century. New Zealand featured initially as an example in the work of others at early International Geographical Union Congresses. There was fleeting New Zealand attendance before the country was represented by proxy as part of the British Empire delegation prior to the first direct university geographer attendance.
On his death in 1942, W. W. Smith was described in an obituary as "second to none in the Dominion as a field naturalist." This phrase had been used some years earlier by scientist-politician George Malcolm Thomson. Today, Smith is largely recalled for his membership of the Scenery Preservation Commission (1904-1906) and work as the domain curator in Ashburton (1894-1904) and Pukekura Park in New Plymouth (1908-1920). This paper revisits Smith's reputation as a naturalist. In so doing it considers the fields of knowledge he engaged with and identifies some of the scientific networks in which he was embedded.
The article suggests Jobberns' view of geopolitics ultimately rested on the work of British geographer Sir Halford Mackinder overlain by the writing of American political geographers. Jobberns' geopolitical thinking was, however, also strongly informed by his being a Freemason. WWII, as the overshadowing external event of Jobberns' early years at Canterbury, amplified his interest in geopolitics both as a way of understanding the world and, at a time when geography was not universally accepted as a university discipline, as a means of promoting to a wider public the utility of a geographical perspective on world affairs.
