Purpose In recent years, consumers of all ages have developed an increased awareness of green consumption based on the ongoing discussions of climate change and sustainability policies. Logistics activities such as the transport, packaging and waste management of goods cause substantial environmental harm which can be influenced by the consumers. This paper aims to study the value of green logistics in consumers’ decisions, revealing the differences between the younger (17 to 30 years) and the older generation (31 to 69 years), as well as to develop recommendations for promoting green logistics activities. Design/methodology/approach We conducted three online surveys: the first with consumers of all ages (n=1,001); the second, based on the results of the first survey, with consumers of all ages (n=1,017); and the third with a specific focus on younger consumers (n=119). Survey I identified generational differences, while survey II built on these results and expanded the set of variables with communication aspects regarding green logistics. Survey III specifically focused on the younger generation's decisions and willingness to pay. Findings The findings show that both generations are generally interested in green logistics, with a higher willingness to pay for green logistics among younger consumers. In addition, the younger generation requires a higher level of information regarding green logistics behind a product. Originality This study extends our knowledge about the value of green logistics in end consumer decisions (B2C context) since previous studies focused on green logistics B2B relations. This study is one of few studies elaborating on the intergenerational differences in the value attributed to green logistics. Moreover, we provide practical and policy recommendations to support the integration of green logistics activities in consumer decisions.
Integrating green supply chain strategies and circular economy (CE) practices holds substantial potential for promoting environmental sustainability and reducing CO2 emissions. This study investigates the synergy between green supply chain practices, circular economy, and economic growth (RGDP) impacts on carbon emissions in 13 selected European Union (EU) countries, using a comprehensive panel dataset from 2000 to 2022. We employ both linear and nonlinear panel ARDL models, along with causality tests, to examine how CO2 emissions respond to changes in green supply chain management (GSCM), real GDP (RGDP), and various recycling practices, including bio-waste, municipal waste, and packaging waste. Our findings reveal that GSCM practices significantly reduce carbon emissions in the long run, while economic growth (RGDP) and municipal waste generation correlate positively with increased CO2 emissions. Interestingly, the nonlinear ARDL model highlights that only recycling packaging waste (RWP) exhibits a positive long-run effect on reducing emissions. Additionally, the method of moments quantile regression (MMQR) analysis indicates that the impact of GSCM is more pronounced at higher quantiles of CO2 emissions, whereas the effect of RGDP on emissions remains inconsistent. These results underscore the crucial need to adopt and enhance green supply chain practices within a circular economy framework to achieve substantial carbon emission reductions, holding significant implications for carbon emissions policies in the selected EU countries.
The vision of the Physical Internet (PI) involves both sharing logistics resources and information exchange within an open network. The implementation of PI is seen as a promising contribution toward sustainable logistics. This paper investigates motives for and success factors in collaborating in a PI network. We apply an interpretive case-based research approach involving four shippers and three logistics service providers (LSPs) that operate in a PI network. Motives are defined as the reasons that encourage an organization to enter the PI network. Success factors are conditions required for organizations to continue collaborating in a PI network. This is the first PI study conducted in a multi-industry context. The findings demonstrate the central and neutral orchestration of resources (i.e., physical, digital/intangible, and relational resources) as a substantial and multi-faceted issue in PI and continuous PI collaboration. A well-accepted theory (Resource-Based View) and its most recent extension (Resource Orchestration Theory-ROT) frame and guide our research. ROT informs the deployment of physical, digital/intangible, and relational resources by a neutral orchestrator in a PI network. The knowledge of motives and success factors allows the development of future user-oriented PI services that are likely to be accepted by shippers and LSPs.
Novel technologies and application scenarios for store-based retailing are available in a large variety. The retailers’ strategic focus and willingness to invest in these innovations is unclear to a certain point. This research paper aims to identify and evaluate technologies and application scenarios for brick-and-mortar retailing from Austrian retailing businesses’ perspective. Beside a literature review to get an overview of retail technologies and their fields of application, semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to ascertain the status quo and to survey the relevance of technology use in store based retailing, as well as to assess its potential in the future. Qualitative data analysis has been processed, followed by an expert workshop with interdisciplinary retail technology and retailing experts to objectively validate the primary research findings.
A case research approach is employed for investigating and comparing managerial perceptions of the three types of innovation (service, product, and process innovations) within the context of cross-functional network of a European steel manufacturing firm. The insights result in the development of a typology of innovation projects based on origin, context, scope, benefits, and degree of complexity. The findings embedded in Resource Based View and Service Dominant Logic, reveal divergent aspects of the three types of innovation such as disparate reasons for undertaking each type of innovation and distinct internal and external success factors, as well as convergent aspects of the innovation types such as similar challenges. This research explores the three types of innovation in a single firm in a single study and provides a middle ground for the two extant schools of thought (one viewing product, service, and process innovations as entirely different processes and the other viewing all three as essentially same processes).
Purpose Increasing environmental uncertainty, more demanding customers, rapid technological growth and rising capital costs have all forced firms to evolve from collaborating with buyers and suppliers to collaborating with their competitors and that is called coopetition. The purpose of this paper is to better understand the antecedents and outcomes associated with coopetition. Design/methodology/approach Building from the existing literature and three theoretical foundations, resource-based theory, resource dependence theory and game theory, the authors develop a model showing the antecedents and outcomes of coopetition and associated propositions of coopetition. Using a semi-structured interview process of 21 industry executives, the authors offer empirical support for the proposed coopetition model and propositions. Findings Firms are increasingly dependent on the knowledge and expertise in external organizations to innovate, solve problems and improve supply chain performance. This research suggests that there is a value for firms to consider coopetition as a part of their inter-firm strategies. Research limitations/implications The semi-structured interview process used in this research provided a wealth of information and executive experiences in coopetition. The interviews, however, only provide a single perspective of collaborative engagements with competitors. Multiple perspectives of each project would add value to this research. Originality/value Collaboration among buyers and suppliers have been well researched; however, there has not been as much research on coopetition. This research provides a new area for future research for academics and offers suggestions for managers to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their coopetition projects.
Manufacturer's concepts for direct supply to food retailers have already been replaced in the 1970s byestablishment of logistical supply networks and concepts. The development of IT-based enterprise resourceplanning systems and the design of efficient networks of stores consequently led to higher availability andimproved service levels for consumers. Although the management of logistics costs always remains challengingwithin existing supply processes, e-commerce adds another new challenge. Existing goods supply processes instore-based retailing will be complemented by additional goods flows from online sales, in future. Studiesincreasingly show the relevance of multi-channel retailing: consumers' loyalty rises, unless additionalinformation and distribution options in food retailing are available online. However, food retailers in Austriaonly recently start opening online distribution channels by providing deliveries of food and hygiene items in owndedicated web-shops. Reasons for that corresponding restraint are diverse: (i) very high store density, (ii) highlevel of consumer satisfaction with current store-based concepts and (iii) the not yet fully developed handling oflogistical procedures and infrastructure in food online processing (e.g. packaging, cooling, etc.). It is necessary toadapt existing supply processes in food retailing to be able to handle the „last-mile“cost- and time-efficient. Themain aspect in terms of these challenges for efficiently logistics processing in online retailing is the creation ofoptimum synergies with existing supply processes. In the underlying research, a derived holistic view of variousrequirements of distribution structures identifies corresponding potential: the role of end consumers in thenetwork is as considered as the predominant process structures and possible last-mile concepts for onlinedistribution in Austrian food retailing. A resulting two-stage potential-rating regards the consumer side as well asretailer-side aspects in order to determine the important economic dimensions and logistics capabilities ofdifferent supply concepts. Regional logistics development plans have become a key element for an effective – regional economy in Austria. Efforts to develop the region of Carinthia – which represents a substantial transport hub on the Baltic–Adriatic Axis – depend on targeted infrastructure investments combined with well-utilized and accessible modes of transport. As decisions on transport mode choice are made within companies, their involvement in planning processes is crucial. Therefore a more consistent approach to Carinthia’s logistics infrastructure developments is required. The view of regional businesses is considered a significant basis for further public and managerial decision making with regard to the importance of future logistics developments.
