Accessibility to gambling venues constitutes a critical dimension through which geographical research contributes to gambling studies. This investigation examined the relationship between accessibility to diverse gambling forms and residents' participation patterns, attitudes (ATGS), and problem gambling severity (PGSI) within the Olomouc Region of the Czech Republic—a European context where gambling research has received comparatively less attention than studies from China, the USA, or Australia. Employing GIS network analysis, we calculated temporal accessibility metrics for various gambling venue types, subsequently applying cluster analysis to identify four distinct municipal groupings based on these accessibility profiles. Analysis of gambling behaviour among 2,447 residents revealed variations in participation and attitudes across clusters, though these differences did not reach statistical significance. This finding suggests potential spatial saturation, wherein the high density of gambling opportunities—with lottery outlets accessible within an average of 1.7 min, betting shops within 4.5 min, gambling halls within 9 min, and casinos within 11.8 min—may have created a ceiling effect where additional venues no longer influence participation rates.
This study examines the relationship between daily encounters with gambling facilities and gambling participation in a Czech region that transformed from having one of the world's highest gambling facility densities to implementing strict regulations. Using a sample of 2,447 respondents from 277 municipalities, the research analyses how daily encounters with gambling facilities, rather than mere facility presence, influence gambling behaviour. The study incorporates individuals' accessibility based on daily encounters within their living space, moving beyond conventional metrics of availability. Results show that the extent of encounters during daily routines is a stronger predictor of gambling participation than facility presence alone, with the most pronounced effects observed in casinos and gaming halls. Municipalities with comprehensive gambling offerings showed the highest proportion of at-risk and problem gamblers. These findings emphasise the importance of considering population mobility in gambling accessibility analyses and suggest implications for local regulatory policies.
This study examines players’ adaptation mechanisms after gambling venues reduction. Current research on gambling regulation focuses primarily on availability effects, yet empirical evidence on how players adapt to venue closures remains limited. Environmental prevention strategies that systematically alter gambling conditions create natural experimental situations where players must adjust their behaviour to changed circumstances. To address this gap, we conducted an online survey among 1,503 regular gamblers in the Czech Republic. Using multinomial logistic regression, we analysed adaptation strategies across three venue types: lottery outlets, betting shops, and electronic gambling machine (EGM) venues. Our findings reveal that 41.3% of regular players experienced venue closure, with significant variations in adaptation patterns. While 68.8% of lottery players switched to other venues, only one-third of EGM players chose this option, with most transitioning to online gambling instead. Key predictors of online migration included younger age, online preference, and venue supply levels. Notably, only 5.5% of EGM players completely ceased gambling after venue closure, suggesting limited effectiveness of supply reduction for high-risk gambling forms. Gender emerged as a significant factor, with men showing 65–73% lower probability of cessation. These results indicate that venue restrictions primarily lead to activity redistribution rather than participation reduction, supporting the ‘balloon effect’ concept.
The DIANA mission represents an underwater analog space mission designed to simulate and study the impact of long-duration spaceflight and extraterrestrial habitation on crew performance, psychosocial dynamics, and technological systems. The mission utilized an underwater habitat, the Hydronaut H03 DeepLab, to mimic the isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environment of space. Over eight days, a six-member crew lived and worked in underwater (3) and water surface (3) habitats, performing scientific experiments and operational tasks. The mission schedule encompassed a variety of activities such as drone exploration, extravehicular activities (EVAs), soil sampling, and media interactions, culminating in a simulated departure from the lunar surface. Data collection methods included continuous biomedical monitoring, cognitive task assessments, and sociomapping to analyze team communication and cooperation. This paper provides an overview of the mission architecture and outcomes, offering valuable insights into the challenges of future human space exploration and informing improvements in crew selection, training, and support systems.
OBJECTIVES:This qualitative study, which provides practical insights for the field, described the transition process of psychological service providers towards online care provision. We aimed to describe the process of professionals' adaptation to new methods of distant psychological care, including its main facilitating and complicating elements. METHODS:We used a qualitative approach, specifically evaluation design, employing reflexive thematic analyses conducted by the software ATLAS.ti. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 51 professionals, and 14 focus groups with 44 experts. We worked with 95 experienced professionals specializing in clinical psychology, psychological counseling, and counseling those affected by domestic violence. All of them have had practical exposure to delivering care online. RESULTS:The results show that after first-hand involvement, most of the providers have moved from being cautious experimenters to being regular practitioners of online remote psychological care in cases where it is appropriate. Technical difficulties and negative stereotypes receded, with many respondents striving to provide online services for their clients' benefit. However, some negative aspects persist, including the lack of timely support from key institutions. CONCLUSIONS:Logistical barriers stem from poor management and insufficient political, legislative and financial support. Ethical and legal challenges require serious attention from key system players. The question of embodiment, involving new therapeutic cues and compensating for absent ones, warrants thorough follow-up research. Bias and stereotype-related barriers, often shaped by providers' attitudes, can be addressed through targeted training and shared professional experiences.

Gambling encompasses a wide variety of activities, and the structural characteristics of each form contribute to its potential risk. However, the literature does not fully agree on the risk levels of certain gambling forms. In this study, we classify less risky gambling forms (soft forms) based on public perceptions of their riskiness. We examine the link between gambling experience and problem gambling prevalence. A survey was conducted in a model region of the Czech Republic, a post-socialist country with high gambling availability, with N = 2,498 respondents. A typology of gambling forms (lotteries, betting, and casino games) was created based on perceived risk similarities. Lotteries are the most frequently played gambling form, with 86.3
Casinos are one of the traditional gambling venues across the world and are often regarded as a symbol of the gambling industry. The Czech Republic has gradually developed into one of the countries where gambling establishments are most accessible. The new Gambling Act aims to concentrate individual establishments closer to each other and thus reduce their level of accessibility. The aim of our study is, therefore, to assess the impact of the new regulatory law on the spatial representation, geographical accessibility, and changes in catchment areas of casinos at the level of municipalities in the Czech Republic (6,258 spatial units) between 2017 (reflecting the situation at the time of the law's implementation) and 2023 (six years after). The main map shows the results of the Huff model, which is used to model the catchment areas of casino municipalities and the changes in these areas and in temporal availability.
Much of the burgeoning research on adult attachment in organizational settings has utilized assessment methods developed for personal or social relationships contexts. Here, we propose and test a novel framework for assessing attachment orientations in the workplace, the Experiences in Work Relationships—Individual (EWR-I), based on a conceptualization of the regulatory functions of attachment dynamics. Using data from two samples comprising early career starters and employees in the Czech Republic ( N = 588 and N = 633) analyses confirmed the bifactorial structure of the new scale corresponding to “interpersonal hyperactivation” (involving emotional instability, negative emotionality, and lack of appreciation in work relationships) and a second factor termed “interpersonal deactivation” (involving distancing from others and relationships at work, mistrust and inhibition of positive emotionality). Evidence of convergent and discriminant validity against general relational assessments of adult attachment, and predictive and construct validity against measures of workplace personality, organizational citizenship behavior and counterproductive work behavior further documented the nature and utility of the new scale. We argue that interpersonal hyperactivation and deactivation represent two distinct and measurable key components of attachment behavior dynamics at work.
Cílem našeho výzkumu bylo zjistit, zda existují statisticky významné rozdíly v kognitivním výkonu v extrémním, izolovaném a uzavřeném prostředí (ICE - Isolated, Confined, and Extreme Environment) u účastníků experimentu.
Objectives. The aim of this study was to create a Czech translation of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), to assess its psychometric properties on a representative sample of the Czech general adult population, and to compare the original 14-item version (PSS-14) with the shortened 10-item (PSS-10) and four-item (PSS-4) versions. Sample and setting. Two pilot studies were conducted to create the final Czech translation of the scale (n = 365 and n = 420). The final version of the Czech PSS was administered to a sample of the Czech general adult population (n = 1725 of whom 981 were women, M = 44.32, SD = 12.8). The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) or the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were administered alongside the PSS to a part of the sample. A retest measurement after 14 days was conducted (n = 159). Statistical analysis. Using the confirmatory factor analysis, the one-factor, two-factor and bifactor models were compared. The internal consistency, stability in time, and convergent validity of the scale, as well as the known-group differences were assessed. The three versions of the PSS were compared. Results. The confirmatory factor analysis supported the bifactor model of the PSS-14 and PSS-10, and the two-factor model of the PSS-4. All versions of the scale showed good internal consistency and stability in time. There was a moderate to strong positive correlation between the PSS and the BDI-II and STAI. Differences based on age, sex, education level, and situational factors were found. Overall, the PSS-10 showed the best psychometric properties of all three versions of the scale. Study limitation. The sample consisted mostly of highly educated respondents.
The aim of the study was to translate the Intrapersonal Curiosity Scale (InC) into the Czech language and to verify its factor structure and psychometric properties on the sample of grammar school students in the Czech Republic. The Intrapersonal Curiosity Scale InC is a 12-item tool that measures the tendency to inquisitively explore own identity and inner experience in order to better understand own inner self. The sample consisted of 1020 participants, of which 353 (34.6%) were boys, 665 (65.2%) were girls, and two participants (0.2%) did not state their sex or age. The authors compared several considered models using CFA. The results suggest that the original theoretical model, which calculates the total InC score as the sum of three mutually correlated subscales EPI, ROP and UEM, is still uncertain in the Czech version verified on a group of adolescents. In the authors' opinion, the version with three factors with minor corrections fits to the data best of all compared models, although with a lack of evidence for the unidimensionality of the overall InC scale. In this model, verification of the weak invariance of the measurements was achieved when comparing girls and boys using MGCFA. Significant correlations of latent scores of EPI, ROP and UEM subscales with other assessed constructs were found.
