The following research study analyses the relationship between types of sexism and intergroup strategies. Specifically, we explored 1) the dimensions attributed by the male in-group to different female subtypes, as well as 2) the relationship between types of sexism and strategies of intergroup differentiation and in-group favouritism. 180 men, with a mean age of 37.67 (DT= 12.1), filled out one of the three versions (traditional woman, independent woman and sexy woman) of a questionnaire. This included measures of features and attributes to evaluate subjects' perception of the woman stimulus, and to undertake ingroup-outgroup comparisons, together with measures of sexism. Overall results show that the independent woman type is both the most favoured and the most discriminated in subjects' assignation of positive and negative features. Moreover, hostile and benevolent sexism toward the independent woman type are related, on the one hand, to a tendency to favour the in-group in the comparison and, on the other, to distancing oneself from this woman type who for subjects carrier a negative image. These results are discussed within the framework of Social Identity Theory.
The term evilness started to become popular in social psychology after the publication in 1999 of the special issue edited by Arthur G. Miller, “Perspectives on evil and violence”. It is usually used to define behaviors that are extremely and strongly harmful. However, the concept is still imprecise and needs to be empirically delineated. This article attempts to answer the following questions. What is evilness? What is the difference between aggression and evilness? We conducted several studies with three goals: to analyze how laypersons and experts define evilness, to verify whether laypeople distinguish between different intensities of evilness, and to determine the dimensions that predict aggression and evilness. The results offer preliminary answers to the three questions.
Traditionally sexism has been considered as a generic hostility towards women. However, sexism can appear together with benevolent attitudes and the acknowledgement of "positive" features of the female stereotype. The answer to this contradiction is in the nature of these features: We cannot infrahumanize women by denying them their capacity to have feelings, but it is possible to under-valuate them by assigning them "devaluated" feelings or features. Also, sexism is characterized by a lack of homogeneity in the perception of the "women" group. We can speak of specific women subtypes: Traditional (housewife), independent (professional) and sexy. In order to,analyze the differences in the attribution of features to these models of women, as well as the differences in the women's valuation, we designed a questionnaire with three versions. Participants (males and females) had to asses the corresponding type of woman on a list of 24 features associated to three dimensions: competency-sociability, feeling-emotion, natural-cultural. Results show that both the type of features assigned and the valuation of them vary as a function of the type of woman and the sex of participant.
