Theridiid spiders of the genus Steatoda present in Israel and Sinai have been revised. All type material previously described from the Middle East, along with species from adjacent regions have been re-examined. Comments are given on species newly placed in Steatoda and the following new synonyms are defined: Steatoda signata O.P.-Cambridge, 1876 =Steatoda erigoniformis (O.P.Cambridge, 1872); Lithyphantes ochraceus Simon, 1908, along with Teutana argentea Caporiacco, 1933 =Steatoda ephippiata (Thorell, 1875); Lithyphantes gerhardti Wiehle, 1934 =Steatoda maura (Simon, 1909). The presence of six species formerly reported from this region has been confirmed, and the occurrence of another three species previously unknown from Israel and Sinai, has been proved. All are newly described. The male of S. latifasciata and the female of S. dahli are described for the first time, and a description of S. xerophila sp. n. is given. Systematic, ecologic and available zoogeographic information on taxa treated are discussed. Key and illustrations of diagnostic characters of each species are provided.
Israeli thendiid spiders of the genera Theridion, Achaearanea and Anelosimus have been revised. A relative richness in species is presented providing thereby updated information on the little known Mediterranean spider fauna. All type and non‐type material previously described from the Middle East, deposited in several European collections has been re‐examined, along with species from adjacent regions considered pertinent to the study undertaken. Altogether 21 species are recognized. Systematic, ecologic and all available zoogeographic information on taxa treated are discussed along with recent, pertaining literature. The presence of seven species formerly reported from Israel has been confirmed and the occurrence of another four species unknown hitherto from this region, has been proved. Some of these have never been adequately described or illustrated.Ten new species are described: Theridion ochreolus, T. agaricographus, T hierwhonticus, T. jordanensis, T. negebensis, T. gekkonicus, T. dafnensis, T. vallisalinarum, T. pustiliferus and Anelosimus giladensis. The male of Theridion melanostictum is described for the first time. Keys, illustrations of diagnostic characters and records of distribution are provided for each species, all readily applicable also in adjacent countries. These may provide clues for better understanding of zoogeographic patterns of the Palearctic fauna, including those of the Old World Desert belt extending south and east of the Mediterranean region.

ABSTRACT Israeli theridiid spiders of the genus Crustulina have been revised. Four species are recognized. Crustulina conspicua (O.P.-Cambridge, 1872) is redescribed, C. sticta (O.P.Cambridge, 1861) and C. scabripes Simon, 1881 are new records for this region, and a description of a new species C. hermonensis is given. Detailed illustrations and locality records are provided for each species.
1.1. The stridulation sound of the bug Holotrichius innesi (Heter-optera: Reduviidae) was produced when adults of both sexes a well as larvae were disturbed by touching various body parts.2.2. Each pulse was produced by chitinous parts on the rostrum crest scratching over a longitudinal intercoxal pars stridens containing 112–119 teeth. Only 22·4 per cent in females and 36·2 per cent of the pars stridens area in males is used. The stridulatory apparatus of both sexes and of larvae is similar.3.3. (a) The call comprises 5–47 double pulses, the dominant wave appears in the pulse 43·2 times in males and 26·6 times in females. (b) The general pattern of the double pulse of both sexes and the pulse repetition frequency per sec (PRF) are similar, (c) The frequency range of the call is 0·25–12·5 kc/s, the most intense frequency being between 2·0 and 4·0 kc/s. (d) The call of the female has an intensity of 43·3 dB and that of the male of 38·5 dB.4.4. No sexual nor any communicative function was found in the call of Holotrichius. From an evolutionary point of view it may be a rudimentary mechanism.
ABSTRACT A redescription of the Asiatic scorpion, subspecies L. quinquestriatus (H. et E. 1829) hebraeus (Birula, 1908), is given. The morphology and geographical distribution of the subspecies of quinquestriatus are described. The differences between the two subspecies, L. q. quinquestriatus of Africa and L. q. hebraeus of Asia, are summarized. Tendencies of morphological variations with regard to distribution of L. q. hebraeus are discussed. L. q. voelschowi Pohl, 1967, was found to be a synonym of L. q. hebraeus. The description of an unusual specimen from the island of Sinafir is included.
ABSTRACT The scorpion Compsobuthus acutecarinatus E. Sin. hibernates solitarily under stones, on slopes and hilltops of the Negev, while Compsobuthus schmiedeknichti Vachon is found in aggregations of up to 23 specimens under stones near riverbeds in the Mediterranean areas of Israel. The problem of aggregation in scorpionids, a rare phenomenon, is briefly discussed.
