The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of virtual reality to the conventional analogic training environment and show the complementarity of conventional techniques and virtual reality in the learning of dental students. All 88 first-year dental students at a dental school in France in early 2019 were randomly assigned to one of two groups: group 1 (n = 45) was assigned to cavity preparations on a haptic simulator (Virteasy) and group 2 (n = 43) was assigned to conventional practical work on plastic analogue teeth (Kavo). Following three training sessions, the students in group 1 took a final exam on the same plastic analogue teeth exercise. The results showed improvement in the drilling skill of both groups. The simulator-trained group (group 1) had similar results to the plastic analogue-trained group (group 2) in the final test on a plastic analogue tooth. In this study, virtual reality allowed an assessment based on objective criteria and reduced the subjectivity of evaluations conducted on plastic analogue teeth. Considering the saving of supervision and teaching time as well as the material gain offered by virtual reality, the learning methods of haptic simulators are educational options that should be considered by dental educators.
Aim: To evaluate the 5-year follow up of implants placed in partially edentulous patients restored with removable partial dentures. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, survival rates and clinical outcomes of implants placed for retention of removable partial dentures in 36 partially edentulous patients were observed. Results: The survival rate of the implants after a 5-year follow up was 98%. The clinical mean scores for plaque, calculus, gingivitis and bleeding were very low at all evaluation periods. Significant differences between results at successive time periods can be observed only between the plaque index at 1 year and the plaque index at 5 years. Peri-implant probing demonstrated a deepening of pockets over time. However, the changes were not statistically significant between the two evaluation periods. During the first year of function an average attachment loss of 0.4 mm was observed. During the next 4 years the average progression of PPD was about 0.1 mm per year.Conclusion: After 5 years, implants retaining removable partial dentures showed good survival rates and clinical stability. Using implants is a good solution to improve the satisfaction of patients with removable partial dentures; nonetheless this prosthetic solution demands strict surveillance of the patient and is time consuming for the clinician.
Background. The teaching of implant surgery, as in other medical disciplines, is currently undergoing a particular evolution. Aim of the Study. To assess the usefulness of haptic device, a simulator for learning and training to accomplish basic acts in implant surgery. Materials and Methods. A total of 60 people including 40 third-year dental students without knowledge in implantology (divided into 2 groups: 20 beginners and 20 experiencing a simulator training course) and 20 experienced practitioners (experience in implantology >15 implants) participated in this study. A basic exercise drill was proposed to the three groups to assess their gestural abilities. Results. The results of the group training with the simulator tended to be significantly close to those of the experienced operators. Conclusion. Haptic simulator brings a real benefit in training for implant surgery. Long-term benefit and more complex exercises should be evaluated.
L'ostéointégration dans un os sain est un processus largement documenté et maîtrisé. De nombreuses données montrent que ce processus peut être perturbé chez des patients souffrant de maladies générales ou polymédicamentés. Le but de cet article est de fournir au praticien des recommandations cliniques quant à leur influence sur l'ostéointégration des implants.
Le stress est implique dans le developpement de certaines maladies generales et dans le developpement de syndromes buccaux, comme la gingivite ulceronecrotique. Les parodontites sont liees au developpement de germes specifiques de la plaque bacterienne. Cependant d'autres facteurs influencent leurs evolutions. Le stress va jouer un role dans l'inflammation, le processus de degradation tissulaire et de defense de l'hote. Il modifie le comportement du patient, par le bruxisme ou par sa reaction envers les soins. Le stress subi par le malade pourrait expliquer la variabilite d'evolution des parodontites et des resultats therapeutiques. Il constitue un facteur clinique qui doit etre pris en compte dans l'anamnese du patient.
