We present generalized algebraic theories corresponding to slightly modified versions of two of the type theories in our paper Type Theory with Explicit Universe Polymorphism. We first present a generalized algebraic theory for categories with families with extra structure corresponding to Martin-Lof type theory with an external tower of universes. We then present a generalized algebraic theory for level-indexed categories with families with extra structure corresponding to Martin-Lof type theory with explicit universe polymorphism: a theory with universe level judgments, internally indexed universes, and level-indexed products. In this way we get abstract characterizations of the two theories as initial models of their respective generalized algebraic theories. We thus abstract from details of the grammar and inference rules of the type theories and highlight their high-level structure. More broadly, the present work can be viewed as a case study of a uniform approach to categorical logic based on generalized algebraic theories and categories with families. We also discuss the relevance to Voevodsky's initiality conjecture project.

This paper addresses the long-standing question of the predicativity of the Mahlo universe. A solution, called the extended predicative Mahlo universe, has been proposed by Kahle and Setzer in the context of explicit mathematics. It makes use of the collection of untyped terms (denoting partial functions) which are directly available in explicit mathematics but not in Martin-Lof type theory. In this paper, we overcome the obstacle of not having direct access to untyped terms in Martin-Lof type theory by formalizing explicit mathematics with an extended predicative Mahlo universe in Martin-Lof type theory with certain indexed inductive-recursive definitions. In this way, we can relate the predicativity question to the fundamental semantics of Martin-Lof type theory in terms of computation to canonical form. As a result, we get the first extended predicative definition of a Mahlo universe in Martin-Lof type theory. To this end, we first define an external variant of Kahle and Setzer's internal extended predicative universe in explicit mathematics. This is then formalized in Martin-Lof type theory, where it becomes an internal extended predicative Mahlo universe. Although we make use of indexed inductive-recursive definitions that go beyond the type theory $\mathbf {IIRD}$ of indexed inductive-recursive definitions defined in previous work by the authors, we argue that they are constructive and predicative in Martin-Lof's sense. The model construction has been type-checked in the proof assistant Agda.
The aim of this paper is to refine and extend proposals by Sozeau and Tabareau and by Voevodsky for universe polymorphism in type theory. In those systems judgments can depend on explicit constraints between universe levels. We here present a system where we also have products indexed by universe levels and by constraints. Our theory has judgments for internal universe levels, built up from level variables by a successor operation and a binary supremum operation, and also judgments for equality of universe levels.

The aim of this paper is to refine and extend Voevodsky’s draft “A universe polymorphic type system” that outlines a type theory where judgments can depend on equalities between universe levels expressions (constraints). We first recall a version of type theory with an externally indexed sequence of universes. We then add judgments for internal universe levels, built up from level variables by a successor operation and a binary supremum operation, and also judgments for equality of universe levels. Furthermore, we extend this type theory with rules for level-indexed product types. Finally, we add constraints to the theory, so that a hypothetical judgment can depend on equalities between universe levels. We also give rules for constraint-indexed product types, and compare the resulting type theory to Voevodsky’s.

AbstractWe give a syntax independent formulation of finitely presented generalized algebraic theories as initial objects in categories of categories with families (cwfs) with extra structure. To this end, we simultaneously define the notion of a presentation Σ of a generalized algebraic theory and the associated category CwFΣ of small cwfs with a Σ-structure and cwf-morphisms that preserve Σ-structure on the nose. Our definition refers to the purely semantic notion of uniform family of contexts, types, and terms in CwFΣ. Furthermore, we show how to syntactically construct an initial cwf with a Σ-structure. This result can be viewed as a generalization of Birkhoff’s completeness theorem for equational logic. It is obtained by extending Castellan, Clairambault, and Dybjer’s construction of an initial cwf. We provide examples of generalized algebraic theories for monoids, categories, categories with families, and categories with families with extra structure for some type formers of Martin-Löf type theory. The models of these are internal monoids, internal categories, and internal categories with families (with extra structure) in a small category with families. Finally, we show how to extend our definition to some generalized algebraic theories that are not finitely presented, such as the theory of contextual cwfs.

We describe the breadth-first traversal algorithm by Martin Hofmann that uses a non-strictly positive data type and carry out a simple verification in an extensional setting. Termination is shown by implementing the algorithm in the strongly normalising extension of system F by Mendler-style recursion. We then analyze the same algorithm by alternative verifications first in an intensional setting using a non-strictly positive inductive definition (not just a non-strictly positive data type), and subsequently by two different algebraic reductions. The verification approaches are compared in terms of notions of simulation and should elucidate the somewhat mysterious algorithm and thus make a case for other uses of non-strictly positive data types. Except for the termination proof, which cannot be formalised in Coq, all proofs were formalised in Coq and some of the algorithms were implemented in Agda and Haskell. 2012 ACM Subject Classification Theory of computation → Logic and verification; Theory of computation → Type theory; Software and its engineering → Abstract data types; Software and its engineering → Recursion; Software and its engineering → Software verification; Software and its engineering → Coroutines
We show how the categorical logic of untyped, simply typed and dependently typed lambda calculus can be structured around the notion of category with family (cwf). To this end we introduce subcategories of simply typed cwfs (scwfs), where types do not depend on variables, and unityped cwfs (ucwfs), where there is only one type. We prove several equivalence and biequivalence theorems between cwf-based notions and basic notions of categorical logic, such as cartesian operads, Lawvere theories, categories with finite products and limits, cartesian closed categories, and locally cartesian closed categories. Some of these theorems depend on the restrictions of contextuality (in the sense of Cartmell) or democracy (used by Clairambault and Dybjer for their biequivalence theorems). Some theorems are equivalences between notions with strict preservation of chosen structure. Others are biequivalences between notions where properties are only preserved up to isomorphism. In addition to this we discuss various constructions of initial ucwfs, scwfs, and cwfs with extra structure.
A higher inductive type of level 1 (a 1-hit) has constructors for points and paths only, whereas a higher inductive type of level 2 (a 2-hit) has constructors for surfaces too. We restrict attention to finitary higher inductive types and present general schemata for the types of their point, path, and surface constructors. We also derive the elimination and equality rules from the types of constructors for 1-hits and 2-hits. Moreover, we construct a groupoid model for dependent type theory with 2-hits and point out that we obtain a setoid model for dependent type theory with 1-hits by truncating the groupoid model.
There has been sustained interest in functional programming languages with dependent types in recent years. The foundations of dependently typed programming can be traced back to Martin–Löf's work in the 1970s. In the past decades, this vision has given rise to the development of proof assistants and functional programming languages based on dependent types. The increased popularity of systems such as Agda, Coq, Idris, and many others, reflects the growing momentum in this research area. After sending out our first call for papers in October 2015, we are happy to accept six articles in this special issue covering a wide spectrum of topics.
