This chapter provides an overview of chemistry of protein associations. For two proteins to associate, they must have surface areas complementary to each other. Complementarity means that the association partners share the same van der Waals' envelope over some area. This envelope is the surface tangent to the van der Waals' spheres of all atoms in the given area. Complementary surfaces need not be continuous; they readily tolerate holes. Electrostatic effects mainly contribute to the specificity of protein associations. The high degree of specificity found in protein complexes is incurred, apart from the geometric complementarity of contact surfaces, by the proper positioning of polar groups. In effect, to yield a stable association, all charged side chains at protein interfaces should form salt bridges and all hydrogen bond formers are to find their donor or acceptor counterparts. Protein–protein associations invoke the complementarity of protein interfaces, ensured by the proper fit of van der Waals' envelopes and the precise pairing of charged groups and hydrogen bond donors/acceptors, and an appropriate amount of hydrophobic forces, to attain reasonable bond strength.
A dinuclear carbyne complex containing a CoW bond has been prepared analogously to previously described dinuclear carbyne complexes. The X-ray structure determination shows that the (CO)4Co fragment has approximate C3η symmetry and one of the CoCO equatorial bonds is in an eclipsed position with one of the WCO bonds of the tetracarbnyltungsten-carbyne fragment. IR and Raman spectra of the CO region, and mass and NMR spectra of the compound are discussed.
An “acetylene alcohol”, which is stabilized by coordination to a transition metal to atom, arises on photochemical reduction of the carbyne complex (1) with acetylacetone. Crystal structure analysis shows the acetylene C atoms to be symmetrically bonded to the W atom.
The crystal and molecular structure of the complex (C5H5)2W(CO)2 has been determined by X-ray analysis R1 = 0.063). The structure contains a trihapto-cyclopentadienyl ligand, bent along its 1,3-axis by 20°. By this unusual structure, a 20-electron valence configuration of the central metal is avoided.
Abstract By anodic oxidation of naphthalene in H2CCl2/O.O2m Bu4NPF6 at -45 °C dark red-violet crystals of (C10H8)2PF6 can be obtained by electrocrystallisation. They are stable at low temperatures, however, decompose on warming. In solution and in the polycrystalline state these radical cation salts show only narrow e.p.r. signals without h.f.s. The specific conductivity of a polycrystalline pellet at room temperature was determined to be 0.12 ±0.046 Ohm-1 cm-1 . The structure determination of (C10H8)2PF6 yielded the tetragonal space group P42/n, Z = 2, a = b = 1156(2), c = 640(1) pm. Patterson synthesis and difference Fourier analyses showed the compound to have a columnar stacking of C10H8 units the long molecular axes of which are twisted alternately by 90° around a screw axis in c-direction, and the molecular planes of which are 320 pm apart. The PF6 -ions have four nearest C10H8 neighbours lying in pairs in parallel planes 63 pm above and below that plane of PF6 - perpendicular to the c-axis and containing a PF4 group. This is the first established case for a columnar structure of a pure hydrocarbon radical cation. (C10H8)2AsF6 is isomorphous.
Abstract The title compound may be prepared by irradiation of (CO)5CrFe2(CO)8PPh, which itself is accessible from Fe2(CO)9 and (CO)5CrPPhCl2. It forms a tetrahedral cluster in which a pentacarbonylchromium fragment acts as the apex of a tetrahedron the base of which ist formed by an Fe2P-triangle. X-ray analysis reveals that the chromium atom interacts strongly with all three atoms of the tetrahedral base, thus substantiating a coordination number of eight for Cr(O).
[Bis(trimethylsilyl)isodiazene](cyclopentadienyl)metal Complexes: Synthesis and Structure1) The following complexes are formed by the reaction of Cp2TiCl2 or Cp2M (M V, Cr, Mn; Cp C5H5) with Me3Si-N N-SiMe3: Cp2TiNN(SiMe3)2 (2), Cp2VNN(SiMe3)2 (1), [CpCrNN(SiMe3)2]2 (3), [CpMnNN(SiMe3)2]2 (4). While in the case of 2 (and possibly 1) the bis(trimethylsilyl)isodiazene ligand is terminally bound to the metal, according to X-ray analysis in the case of 4 (and possibly 3) NN(SiMe3)2 combines two metal atoms.
