Nerve Injuries and Their Repaircaps Sir Sydney Sunderland's considerable contributions to the subject of nerve fiber degeneration and regeneration. As he states in the preface, there is no need to restate much of the contents ofNerves and Nerve Injury. In this book, therefore, he provides a companion volume to the earlier editions that addresses itself to amendments and "new and relevant information on nerve injury and repair." For those persons who have found the earlier editions helpful in their thinking and practice, this volume should be purchased to give them Dr Sunderland's further views. The appearance of this book is pleasing and has clear type and good line drawings. The information is often presented in point form. When this device is used to list a series of observations, different points and views, or components of a subject, it is quite effective. For other purposes, it seems contrived. For
Three eminent investigators in peripheral nerve disease, H. H. Schaumburg, P. S. Spencer, and P. K. Thomas, have, as expected, provided a concise and readable account of peripheral nerve disease. The book “evolved from H. Schaumburg's syllabus for the undergraduate and graduate courses on peripheral nerve disease at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.” Spencer, a colleague from Einstein, and Thomas, from the Royal Free Hospital in London, have joined Schaumburg to expand this syllabus and to write “a concise, elementary monograph on peripheral neuropathy intended for individuals engaged in the practice of general medicine and neurology.” They have succeeded.

The basal content and rate of accumulation of dopamine-β-hydroxylase and acetylcholinesterase activity against a ligature have been measured in biopsy samples of sural nerve from normal human volunteers and patients with various peripheral nerve diseases. Consistent reductions in the rate of accumulation of dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity have been noted in DÉjerine-Sottas disease, peroneal muscular atrophy, and hereditary sensory neuropathy type II. Because of the relatively normal basal levels of enzyme activity in these conditions, it seems likely that the transport of proteins is impaired, over and above any changes that may have occurred in the number of surviving axons and the rate of enzyme synthesis in the cell bodies giving rise to them.
AbstractQuantitative histologic and teased‐fiber measurements were made on specimens of sural nerves of man in the first two decades of life, thus providing normal data not previously availabel. As previously reported for nerves from adults, there was a linear relationship between diameter and length of internodes: large fibers had long internodes and small fibers had short internodes. The slopes of the regression lines calculated for this relationship for each of these nerves became steeper with increasing age. In the second decade the slope became similar to that of nerves of adults.The transverse fascicular area increased particularly during the first five years of life. The number of myelinated fibers per nerve varied from approximately 4,000 to 12,300, the lowest value occurring in the nerve of the newborn. The frequency distribution of the myelinated fibers was unimodal in the newborn and was already bimodal by the seventh month. Whereas the peak of the small fiber group remained in the 2.0 to 2.9–μ size group in all nerves, the peak of the large fiber group shifted to larger size categories with increasing age, reaching adults values just after the age of five years. This correlates well with the age at which maximal conduction velocities are attained in the ulnar nerve.The diameter of the axis cylinder bore a linear relationship to the diameter of the whole myelinated fiber: small fibers had thin myelin sheaths and large fibers had thick ones. The value of the ratio of the diameters incresed progressively from small to large fibers, a result which is probably spurious. The slope of the regression lines for the relationship of diameter of axis cylinder to diameter of the whole fiber was the same for nerves of persons of different ages.
IN A perspicuous report in 1952, Andrade1described the natural history of dominantly inherited amyloidosis. The hallmarks of the condition were (1) dominant inheritance, (2) onset in the second or third decade, (3) unremitting course to death, due to cachexia and infection, an average of seven to ten years later, and (4) characteristic pattern of symptoms. Affected persons exhibited paresis, early impairment of thermal and pain sensibilities, and anhidrosis in the lower limbs. Concomitant symptoms were nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains, and sexual and sphincter disorders. A unique feature was the dissociated sensory loss. Andrade found that the various modalities of sensation were lost in the following order: temperature, pain, touch, and, finally, joint position. On postmortem examination, amyloid deposits were found in large amounts in kidneys and peripheral nerves and to a lesser extent in other organs. No adequate anatomic or physiologic explanation for the dissociated sensory loss
