Virtual Reality (VR) is a simulation technique that utilizes computer-generated environments, allowing for the creation of controlled, reproducible, and standardized settings. The main benefit of VR lies in its ability to produce a sense of presence, enabling users to engage in the learning process as though they were experiencing the events in real life. These benefits can be extended to specialized training such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). VR is highly effective for CPR education, offering an immersive, interactive, and multi-sensory experience that enhances realism compared to traditional methods. Although VR offers significant potential for teaching basic life support and early defibrillation (BLSD), it does have limitations: users are unable to experience the physical resistance. This randomized controlled study describes the development of the VR BLSD scenario at phase 6 of the Research and Development cycle: main field testing. This study aims to determine whether a VR-based BLSD scenario, can closely mimic the experience of a traditional BLSD training course. The trial was conducted in one nursing school in Rome (Italy), on a convenience sample of third-year nursing students. This pilot study confirmed that the VR BLSD scenario, was acceptable, and usability and level of presence experienced were good. Although satisfaction and self-confidence scores were slightly lower in the VR group, the differences were not statistically significant, indicating that VR-based training may serve as a viable complementary approach in BLSD education. Furthermore, large-scale trials should be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the VR BLSD scenario, compared to traditional BLSD scenario, and the impact on participants’ learning outcomes.
Background/Objectives: Dental anxiety represents a major challenge in paediatric dentistry and is a frequent cause of non-cooperative behaviour during dental treatment. Nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation conscious sedation is widely used to reduce anxiety in children, while audiovisual distraction is a non-pharmacological behavioural technique aimed at diverting attention from stressful stimuli. Evidence regarding the combined effect of these two approaches during dental treatment is still limited. Methods: This randomized crossover clinical trial included 25 paediatric patients aged 4-7 years with dental anxiety and previous failed attempts at conventional dental treatment. Each child underwent two dental treatment sessions under nitrous oxide/oxygen conscious sedation, one with and one without audiovisual distraction. Anxiety and behaviour were assessed using the Modified Venham Scale and the Facial Image Scale (FIS). Vital parameters were recorded before, during, and after sedation. Results: A significant reduction in heart rate over time was observed in both groups (p < 0.05). In children aged 4-5 years, the combined audiovisual distraction and conscious sedation approach was associated with significantly lower heart rate values compared to conscious sedation alone (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between the two approaches for behavioural scores assessed by the Venham and FIS scales. Conclusions: Although behavioural scores did not differ significantly, audiovisual distraction contributed to greater physiological stability, particularly in terms of heart rate control. This no-pharmacological approach may complement the pharmacological effects of nitrous oxide sedation by enhancing the overall sense of relaxation and comfort during dental care.
BACKGROUND:Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune disease that can involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). OBJECTIVES:To investigate the association between clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and TMJ inflammation, as detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children and adolescents with JIA. METHODS:Monocentric cross-sectional observational study. Consecutive JIA patients underwent clinical dental examination following the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) and performed MRI examination when the presence of signs and/or symptoms was detected. TMJ involvement was assessed using MRI parameters. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics, using parametric statistical tests for normally distributed data and non-parametric statistical tests for other variables. Associations between TMD signs/symptoms and MRI findings were investigated using appropriate statistical tests. Adjustment for multiple comparisons was performed using a false discovery rate approach. A p-value < 0.05 after correction was considered statistically significant. RESULTS:Seventy-six JIA patients were included. In unadjusted analyses, multiple associations emerged between clinical findings and MRI signs of TMJ involvement. After correction for multiple comparisons, TMJ sounds remained significantly associated with protrusion limitation, and mandibular deviation patterns were significantly associated with inflammatory MRI findings, particularly synovial thickening and bone marrow edema. Other associations did not retain statistical significance after adjustment and should be considered exploratory. CONCLUSIONS:Dental and TMD evaluations revealed correlations with MRI findings of TMJ involvement. Application of TMD screening at JIA onset might make it possible to detect TMJ-related early signs of arthritis in patients with JIA.
Cardiac arrest is a major global health problem. The early recognition of the Cardiac Arrest and initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as well as early automated external defibrillation are related to improvements in outcomes for patients with OHCA. Many new technologies for teaching CPR have become available in recent years, in particular, virtual reality (VR). Immersive technologies provide users with an engaging and enjoyable learning platform to train skills to proficiency without risking patient safety. Such technologies can be a powerful tool that increases public awareness and learning of life-saving skills, primarily due to the high level of immersivity, perceptual access to real-time scenarios, and impersonation. This study was a pilot trial to test a virtual reality BLSD scenario, incorporated with a half-body training mannequin for CPR practice in order to approximate the virtual experience to that of a traditional real BLSD course. The scenario created consists of an adult victim in cardiac arrest (unconscious, not breathing, no pulse, and required defibrillation), in an out-of-hospital context. A convenience sample of third-year nursing students and nurses (graduated less than one year) were involved. This pilot study found that the virtual reality BLSD scenario, incorporated with a life-size mannequin, was acceptable, and usability and level of presence experienced by participants were good. However, additional steps are required to complete the development of the virtual scenario.
OBJECTIVES:1) to evaluate the feasibility of a pilot trial on the effectiveness of a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) diary intervention; 2) to explore group differences in parent's and child's psychological outcomes and children's behaviors after discharge from PICU. METHODS:A non-blinded, single-centered, pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) was performed in two PICUs at a tertiary care children's hospital in Italy. Children admitted to the PICU, <18 years old, sedated and intubated for ≥ 48 h were eligible. The exclusion criteria included severe disability (Pediatric Overall Performance Category > 3), low Italian communication proficiency, and no life expectancy. The intervention was the PICU narrative diary. RESULTS:A total of 119 patients were prospectively enrolled from June 2021 to June 2024, of which 60 received a PICU diary, and 59 did not. The composite feasibility outcomes, including eligibility, recruitment, retention, attrition, and protocol adherence met 6 of the 8 criteria. At 1 and 3 months after PICU discharge Post Traumatic Stress Disease (PTSD), anxiety, depression in parents and children, and children's behaviors were measured with validated scales. At the one-month follow-up, parents in the control group had a higher PTSD (21 % vs 11 % p = 0.1) and depression (28 % vs 25 % p = 0.7) and lower anxiety (54 % vs 60 % p = 0.5) compared to the intervention group. At 3 months, lower levels were observed across all outcomes. Parent satisfaction with the intervention was high. The small sample size and lack of blinding were the main study limitations. CONCLUSIONS:The trial was feasible and acceptable. No significant differences in parents' and children' psychological outcomes were found among the study groups. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE:PICU diaries could be a valuable support tool for parents and children admitted to PICU. Further evidence through larger RCTs is needed to understand the effect of post-PICU discharge psychological outcomes on children and their parents.
IntroductionParents often take their children to the Paediatric Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) for non-urgent consultations rather than using community-based primary care services. This study describes the use of primary care services in parents taking their children to the A&E for non-urgent consultations.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2018 to June 2019, in a second-level Italian paediatric A&E of a tertiary-level children’s academic research and hub hospital. Parents of children aged between 3 months and 6 years assigned with a white code at the triage were asked to complete a paper-and-pencil 40-item questionnaire after accessing the A&E for a non-urgent consultation.ResultsThe questionnaire was completed by the parents of 237 children (males 58 %; median age = 2.3 years). Overall, 48.1 % (n = 114) of the parents reported consulting ‘often/always’ the primary care paediatrician, mainly when their child was sick and for check-ups (n = 182, 76.8 %). However, only 7.2 % (n = 17) of the parents ‘often/always’ used any other health service in the community. Most of them (n = 191, 82 %) did not even know where the community health centre was located.ConclusionParents accessing the A&E for non-urgent consultations should be better informed/educated on how to use community health services.
IntroductionThe main purpose of our study was to evaluate whether involvement in a personalized music therapy program (Euterpe method), could improve the condition of children with cerebral palsy and their parents, compared to a control group. It investigated whether it could positively affect children’s sleep quality, temperament and quality of life, quality of family life, and parental stress.MethodsA prospective single-center experimental study was conducted at “Bambino Gesù” Children’s Hospital (Rome, Italy). All subjects involved attended an intensive rehabilitation program in the Neurorehabilitation Unit. In a group of patients (n = 25), a music therapy treatment was applied to evaluate the effect before and after the intervention. This group was also compared with a control group (n = 10) undergoing a standard protocol without music therapy.ResultsIn the experimental group, the analysis shows statistically significant effects in the Disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (p = 0.050) and the Sleep wake transition disorders (p = 0.026) factors, and the total score (p = 0.031) of Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children; the Positive emotionality scale (p = 0.013) of Italian Questionnaires of Temperament (QUIT); the Emotional Functioning (p = 0.029), Social Functioning (p = 0.012), Worry (p = 0.032), Daily Activities (p = 0.032), Total Score (p = 0.039) and Parent HRQL Summary Score (p = 0.035) dimensions of Pediatric Quality of Life for family. While in the control group, only the Attention scale of QUIT (p = 0.003) reaches statistical significance.DiscussionOur study suggests that music therapy with the Euterpe Method has beneficial effects on fundamental aspects of the child’s and his parents’ lives, such as sleep, emotion control, and quality of family life.
Fixed appliance (FA) therapy predisposes patients to white spot lesions (WSLs). The F-ACP complex (amorphous calcium phosphate nanoparticles enriched with carbonate and fluorine and coated with citrate) has been effective for in vitro enamel remineralization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the F-ACP complex in remineralizing WSLs after FA therapy. One hundred and six adolescents (aged 12–20 years) were randomized into study and control groups after FA therapy. Patients in the study group were advised to use dental mousse containing F-ACP applied within Essix retainers for six months. The presence of WSLs was recorded at baseline (T0), 3 months (T1), and 6 months (T2) according to the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). Visual Plaque Index (VPI) and Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) were recorded. Among 106 study participants, 91 (52 and 39 in study and control groups, respectively) completed the study. The results showed that the ICDAS score was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the study group than in the control group between T0 and T2. The application of mousse containing the F-ACP complex inside Essix retainers for six months is effective in remineralizing white spot lesions in patients after FA therapy without side effects.
Background Engaging chronically ill pediatric patients with live music has been associated with improved physiological and psychological well-being. However, the impact of live music during hemodialysis treatments has yet to be assessed, in particular in pediatric patients. This study focuses on the effects of live music therapy during chronic hemodialysis treatment. Methods An experimental design with randomization was applied in this pilot study. A total of 16 participants with kidney failure requiring hemodialysis participated in the study. In addition to their usual care (N = 96 measurements), the patients in the experimental group listened to 30 min of live music during their hemodialysis procedure. The control group was observed for 30 min while they received their usual care (N = 96 measurements) and were exposed to a series of animated videos that were broadcast in the common room where hemodialysis treatment is performed. Data concerning heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of depression and anxiety were collected for analysis. Results Live music significantly reduced heart rate (p < 0.05), systolic pressure (p < 0.05) and diastolic pressure (p < 0.05). The findings also highlighted that, after listening to live music, there was a significant decrease in anxiety and depression (p < 0.05). Conclusions In our small study sample, live music improved some physiological and psychological indices in pediatric hemodialysis patients. Further research evaluating larger samples with longitudinal follow-up is required.
360-degree video is a type of video defined as immersive. Unlike traditional video (2D video), the use of particular viewers (Head Mounted Display - HMD), allow to experience the feeling of being immersed in the scene. Therefore, 360-degree videos can offer a higher level of presence than traditional videos. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the 360-degree video to improve Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) knowledge, satisfaction, and self-confidence in learning in nursing students compared with standard video (2D). This study was a multi-site randomized controlled trial conducted in three different nursing schools in Rome (Italy), with first-year nursing students. Organic acidurias (OAs), urea-cycle disorders (UCDs), and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) belong to the category of intoxication-type inborn errors of metabolism (IT-IEM). Liver transplantation (LTx) is increasingly utilized in IT-IEM. However, its impact has been mainly focused on clinical outcome measures and rarely on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Aim of the study was to investigate the impact of LTx on HrQoL in IT-IEMs. This single center prospective study involved 32 patients (15 OA, 11 UCD, 6 MSUD; median age at LTx 3.0 years, range 0.8-26.0). HRQoL was assessed pre/post transplantation by PedsQL-General Module 4.0 and by MetabQoL 1.0, a specifically designed tool for IT-IEM. PedsQL highlighted significant post-LTx improvements in total and physical functioning in both patients' and parents' scores. According to age at transplantation (& LE;3 vs. >3 years), younger patients showed higher post-LTx scores on Physical (p = 0.03), Social (p < 0.001), and Total (p =0.007) functioning. MetabQoL confirmed significant post-LTx changes in Total and Physical functioning in both patients and parents scores (p & LE; 0.009). Differently from PedsQL, MetabQoL Mental (patients p = 0.013, parents p = 0.03) and Social scores (patients p = 0.02, parents p = 0.012) were significantly higher post-LTx. Significant improvements (p = 0.001-0.04) were also detected both in self- and proxy-reports for almost all MetabQoL subscales. This study shows the importance of assessing the impact of transplantation on HrQoL, a meaningful outcome reflecting patients' wellbeing. LTx is associated with significant improvements of HrQol in both self- and parent-reports. The comparison between PedsQL-GM and MetabQoL highlighted that MetabQoL demonstrated higher sensitivity in the assessment of disease-specific domains than the generic PedsQL tool.
Background In 2016, we performed a one-day investigation to analyze the prevalence of pain, pain intensity, and pain therapy in the Departments of Surgery and Onco-Hematology of the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù. To improve the knowledge gap highlighted in the previous study, refresher courses and even personalized audits have been carried out during these years. The purpose of this study is to evaluate if, after 5 years, there have been improvements in the management of pain. Methods The study was conducted on 25 January 2020. Pain assessment, pain therapies, pain prevalence and intensity in the preceding 24 h and during the recovery period were recorded. Pain outcomes were compared with previous audit results. Results Out of the 63 children with at least one documented pain assessment (starting from 100 eligible), 35 (55.4%) experienced pain: 32 children (50.7%) experienced moderate /severe pain while 3 patients (4%) felt mild pain. In the preceding 24 h, 20 patients (31.7%) reported moderate/severe pain while 10 (16%) reported moderate or severe pain during the interview. The average value of the Pain Management Index (PMI) was − 1.3 ± 0.9 with a minimum of -3 and a maximum of 0. 28 patients (87%) undergoing analgesic therapy for moderate/severe pain had a PMI of less than 0 (undertreated pain), while 3 patients (13%) scored value of 0 or higher (adequate pain therapy), 4 patients (12.5%) received multimodal analgesia with opioids and 2 patients (6%) opioids alone. Time-based therapy was prescribed to 20 patients (62.5%), intermittent therapy was prescribed to 7 patients (22%) and 5 patients (15.5%) did not receive any therapy. The prevalence of pain was higher during hospitalization and 24 h before the interview, while at the time of the interview, the proportion was the same. In this audit, the daily prescription modality of the therapy had some improvements (time-based: 62.5% vs. 44%; intermittent: 22%vs 25%; no therapy: 15.5% vs. 31%). Conclusion Pain management in hospitalized children constantly requires special daily attention from health professionals aimed at mitigating the components of intractable pain and resolving those of treatable pain. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in children needs a multidisciplinary approach. Even if the first-line treatment of pediatric OSA is adenotonsillectomy, nowadays rapid palatal expansion (RPE) is considered a valid additional treatment. The aim of this study is to evaluate cephalometric changes in upper airways dimensions after rapid palatal expansion (RPE) in children suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). A total of 37 children (range age 4–10 years) with diagnosis of OSA referred to Dentistry Unit of Bambino Gesù Children’s Research Hospital IRCCS (Rome, Italy) were included in this pre-post study and underwent lateral radiographs at the start (T0) and at the end (T1) of a RPE treatment. Inclusion criteria were: diagnosis of OSA confirmed by cardiorespiratory polygraphy (AHI > 1) or pulse oximetry (McGill = >2), skeletal maxillary contraction evaluated by presence of posterior crossbite. A control group of 39 untreated patients (range age 4–11 years), in good general health, was set up. A paired T-test was used to investigate the statistical differences between T0 and T1 values in both groups. The results showed a statistically significant increase of nasopharyngeal width in the treated group after RPE treatment. Moreover, the angle that identifies mandibular divergence compared to palatal plane (PP-MP°) was significantly reduced. In the control group, no statistically significant differences were observed. The present study showed that RPE treatment determines a significant sagittal space increase in the upper airways space and a counterclockwise mandibular growth in children with OSA compared to a control group. These results suggest that a widening of the nasal cavities induced by RPE may support a return to physiological nasal breathing and promote a counterclockwise mandibular growth in children. This evidence confirms the crucial role of the orthodontist in the management of OSA in pediatric patients.
Introduction: Whereas ample information describes medication errors (MEs) in children or in mixed pediatric and adult populations discharged with acute or chronic diseases from hospital to community settings, little is known about MEs in children and adolescents with chronic diseases discharged home, a major concern. To promote home medication safety, we trained parents of children discharged with chronic diseases to record ME with a tailored cell-phone eHealth app.Methods: In a 1-year prospective study, we used the app to monitor ME in patients with chronic diseases discharged home from a tertiary hospital in Rome, Italy. Univariate and multivariate analyses detected the ME incidence rate ratio (IRR).Results: Of the 310 parents enrolled, 194 used the app. The 41 MEs involved all drug management phases. The ME IRR was 0.46 errors per child. Children <1 year had the highest ME risk (1.69 vs. 0.35, p = 0.002). Children discharged from the cardiology unit had a statistically higher ME IRR than others (3.66, 95% confidence interval: 1.01-13.23%).Conclusions: The highest ME risk at home involves children with chronic diseases <1 year old. A significant ME IRR at home concerns children with heart diseases of any age. Parents find a tailored eHealth app for monitoring and reporting ME at home easy to use. At discharge, clinical teams need to identify age-related and disease-residual risks to target additional actions for monitoring ME, thus increasing medication safety at home.
Thromboelastography (TEG) is a point-of-care test (POCT) used to analyze the hemostatic properties of whole blood. TEG® 5000and TEG® 6s (Haemonetics Corp, USA) measure the same parameters describing clot viscoelasticity using different methodologies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate agreement between TEG5000 and TEG6s measurements. We analyzed prospectively collected tests resulting from paired blood samples in cardiac surgery pediatric patients at one hour (T0) and 24 h (T1) postoperatively. Each citrated sample was utilized for TEG® 5000 and TEG ®6s. Six specific TEG parameters were analyzed and compared: R kaolin time (RK), R kaolin heparinase (RKH) time, K kaolin time (KK), K kaolin heparinase time KH (KKH), Maximum Amplitude kaolin (MAK), Maximal Amplitude Kaolin Heparinase (MAKH). We enrolled 30 patients. Median (interquartile range) patients’ age was 206 (20–597) days. All surgical patients underwent correction except 5 who were palliated. Sedation with nitrous oxide (N2O) has been widely used as a viable alternative to general anesthesia to perform dental treatments in uncooperative or anxious children. The purpose of this retrospective study is to assess if repeated sedations with N2O can improve collaboration of uncooperative children. The medical records of 650 children, aged between 3 and 14 years, who underwent at least two sedations, were consulted. Differences in the Venham score during the first sedation and subsequent sedations were collected. After removal incomplete records, 577 children's records (309 males and 268 females) were analyzed. The Venham score decreased both during each sedation and with repeated sedations (p < 0.01 for both comparisons). In particular, a significant reduction of the Venham score was observed at the first contact with the dentist, with a mean score ranging from 1.56 ± 1.46 to 1.16 ± 1.37, comparing the first and the second sedation, and from 1.65 ± 1.43 to 1.06 ± 1.30, comparing the first with the third sedation (p < 0.01). The reduction in the Venham score was recorded in both healthy and physically impaired patients, and it was significantly greater in older children than in younger children (p < 0.01). In conclusion, uncooperative children with or without physical impairments can be successfully treated with N2O sedation in order to increase their confidence in dental procedures.
Background Involvement in research activities is complex in pediatric nursing and allied health professionals (AHPs). It is important to understand which individual factors are associated with it to inform policy makers in promoting research. Methods A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to describe the level of participation in research activities over the last ten years of nurses and AHPs working in a tertiary pediatric hospital. A large sample of nurses and AHPs working in an Italian academic tertiary pediatric hospital completed an online self-report questionnaire between June and December 2018. Three multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to predict participation in research projects, speaking at conferences, and writing scientific articles. Results Overall, data from 921 health professionals were analyzed (response rate = 66%), of which about 21% ( n = 196) reported participating in a research project, while 33% ( n = 297) had attended a scientific conference as a speaker, and 11% ( n = 94) had written at least one scientific paper. Having a Master or a Regional Advanced Course, working as an AHP or a ward manager, as well as regularly reading scientific journals and participation in an internal hospital research group or attendance in a specific course about research in the hospital, significantly predicted participation in research projects, speaking at conferences and writing scientific papers. It is important to foster research interest and competencies among health professionals to improve participation in research projects, speaking at conferences, and writing scientific papers. Conclusions Overall, we found a good level of attendance at conferences as speakers (33%), a moderate level of participation in research (21%), and low levels for writing scientific papers (11%). Our study highlighted the need to support participation in research activities among nurses and AHPs. Policymakers should identify strategies to promote research among nurses and AHPs, such as protected rewarded time for research, specific education, strengthened collaboration with academics, and financial support. Moreover, hospital managers should promote the development of research culture among health professionals, to improve their research competencies and evidence-based practice.
Abstract Background Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital anomaly at birth, affecting approximately 1% of live births. In recent decades great medical and surgical advances have significantly increased life expectancy, shifting healthcare professionals' and researchers’ interests in patients' Quality of Life (QoL). The main aims of our study were to evaluate generic and condition-specific QoL in a group of Italian children and adolescents with CHD and their parents and examine the level of agreement and directional disagreement between child/adolescent and parents reports on generic and condition-specific QoL. Methods A cross-sectional study was designed with CHD children and adolescents and their parents referred to the Cardiology Department of “Bambino Gesù” Children’s Hospital. The PedsQL scale was used, including generic (PedsQL 4.0) and cardiac-specific modules (PedsQL 3.0) were administered to patients and caregivers. A Kruskal–Wallis test was used to compare generic and cardiac module scores between patients with different ages, CHD diagnoses, and between patients who underwent surgery interventions and/or are currently taking cardiac medications. Results 498 families were enrolled in this study. On average, patients reported a good level of generic and condition-specific QoL, as well as their mothers and fathers. Children aged between 5–7 years old reported lower generic and cardiac-specific total QoL levels than children aged 8–12 years and adolescents (13–18 years). With regard to the agreement, patient-parent agreement on condition-specific QoL ranged from 25 to 75% while on generic QoL, it ranged from 19 to 76%. The highest percentage of disagreement between parents and children was found in patients aged 5–7 years old, both for condition-specific and generic QoL rates. Conclusions Our study contributed to the growing body of knowledge on QoL in CHD, emphasizing the need for these families to receive support from multidisciplinary standardized care, including psychological consultations and support.
Family Centered Care (FCC) in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) included family involvement in the care process of newborns and infants. Staff perceptions of FCC may influence clinical practice and management strategies in NICUs, with an impact on quality and humanization of the care. The Family-Centred Care Questionnaire-Revised (FCCQ-R) was adapted for the NICU setting, therefore the FCCQ-R@it-NICU was developed and used for the present study in 32 Italian NICUs. We calculated internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha correlation between Current and Necessary dimensions of the scale using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Furthermore, we investigated which characteristics could influence staff perceptions of FCC in NICUs. 921 NICU professionals participated in the study. The FCCQ-R@it-NICU revealed good internal consistency (0.96) and good correlation between dimensions (p < 0.05). Statistical and significant differences in Current and Necessary dimensions were found and some demographic characteristics were found predictable on FCC practice. The FCCQ-R@it-NICU is a valid tool to investigate staff perceptions about FCC in NICU settings. Profession, education level and work experience seem to positively influence the perception of what is required for FCC practice within NICUs.
