We evaluated the structural and floristic characteristics of a Brazilian savanna fragment occupied by cerradão (CD) and cerrado sensu stricto (CS) in response to the influence of rainfall and long-term fire suppression. We carried out floristic, phytosociological and remote sensing studies in a cerrado fragment located in Corumbataí (SP, Brazil) after 43 years of complete fire suppression. We surveyed 43 plots of 200 m2 each (17 plots in CS and 26 plots in CD) and all individuals ≥ 0.32 cm diameter measured at 30 cm from the ground were included in the sample. We calculated phytosociological parameters for each species and classified them in three ecological groups, namely savanna, generalist and forest species. The remote sensing analysis used aerial photographs and satellite images from 1962 to 2019 (i.e. 59 years). The structural study of community revealed high predominance of forest and generalist species when compared to savanna species. Non-linear correlation between CD expansion rates and total rainfall within the study period indicated a positive influence of the rainfall (R2 = 0.42). Thus, our analysis indicated a tendency of a continuous and fast expansion of CD over areas of CS in the long-term absence of fire combined with periods of heavy rain.
We evaluated the floristic and structural composition of a tree community in an ecotone between Cerrado (cerradão) and Atlantic Forest (seasonal semideciduous forest) domains located in Porto Ferreira State Park (PFSP), southeastern Brazil. We compared the floristic relationships of this ecotone with those of previous surveys carried out on the same vegetation types and checked the species distribution among the Brazilian biomes. We sampled all living trees with PBH>10 cm in 64 10x10 m plots (0.64 ha), totaling 1,755 individuals belonging to 101 species and 37 families. The richest families were Myrtaceae (13 spp.) and Fabaceae (11 spp.), and Siparuna guianensis was the most abundant species (188 individuals). We reported two threatened species. A great number of species are widely distributed, occurring in different Brazilian biomes. Floristic similarity values were low among the selected studies, but our sampled community clustered with communities of cerradão and ecotone areas of previous surveys. Our results corroborate that ecotonal areas have great tree diversity and the predominance of widely distributed species. This fact, combined with the vegetation thickening verified through historical photographs, reinforces that the study area belongs to an under-changing ecotone.
Abstract A species previously treated in Staurogyne (S. nitida) is elevated to the category of a new genus of Acanthaceae, subfamily Nelsonioideae, based on morphological and molecular data. The sole species, Aymoreana nitida, occurs in the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, from southern Bahia to northern Espírito Santo. Aymoreana differs from other genera of Nelsonioideae by the combination of the calyx with subequal segments, the slightly zygomorphic corolla, the four didynamous stamens, and the asymmetric gynoecium. Morphological information is accompanied by a molecular phylogenetic tree, ecological data, a preliminary conservation assessment, and illustrations.
ABSTRACT Vascular epiphytes are responsible for a considerable portion of tropical biodiversity; however, the variation of epiphytes-phorophytes relationships in different vegetation types are still poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to assess the presence, abundance, vertical distribution, and life cycle (holoepiphyte and hemiepiphyte) of vascular epiphytes in two vegetation types [Seasonal Semideciduous Forest (- SSF), and Swamp Forest (- SF)] in order to determine any correlation with phorophyte size (diameter and height) and the specificity of phorophyte species to the epiphytic colonization. There was a higher number of phorophytes in SF; however, epiphytes density did not differ between the vegetation types. The recorded vertical distribution also showed different patterns: in the SSF, most epiphytes were found in the canopy, while in the SF they occurred mainly on the trunks of the trees. The abundance of epiphytes was positively correlated with the phorophyte size in the two vegetation types. In the SSF, colonization of phorophytes by epiphytes appeared to be less species-specific than in the SF, where trees density is likely to be a more significant factor to epiphytic colonization. The results showed the importance of the forest heterogeneity in the conservation and maintenance of vascular epiphytes assemblage, demonstrated by differences in the abundance and distribution of the epiphytes, even in contiguous forests.
We conducted a taxonomic study of the fern genera Lomaria, Lomariocycas, and Parablechnum (Blechnaceae, Polypodiopsida) in southern and southeastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul). We recognized six species (one of Lomaria, one of Lomariocycas, and four of Parablechnum), three of which have a broad neotropical distribution and three that are endemic to Brazil. Four new records are reported for four species in different regions or states from Brazil, and a new record for Guyana. Taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, lectotypifications, a neotypification (Parablechnum usterianum), geographical distributions, and comments are given for all species occurring in the study region, as well as a key for the identification of the Brazilian species of Parablechnum.
A taxonomic study of the fern genera Austroblechnum, Cranfillia, Neoblechnum, Lomaridium, and Telmatoblechnum, formerly Blechnum s. l. (Blechnaceae, Polypodiopsida), was conducted in southern and southeastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul) and 11 species were recognized (six of Austroblechnum, two of Cranfillia, one of Neoblechnum, one of Lomaridium, and one of Telmatoblechnum). One species has a circum-Antarctic distribution (plus Mexico), three species have a broadly Neotropical distribution, six species are restricted or almost restricted to South America and one is endemic to Brazil. New records are presented for six species in states from southeastern Brazil, in other regions of the country, as well as in other countries. Taxonomic descriptions, synonymies, lectotypifications, geographical distributions, and comments are presented for all genera and species occurring in the study area. We also give keys for the identification of Brazilian genera of Blechnaceae and for species of the genera treated here.
Twenty-eight species of Staurogyne are recognized from the Neotropics, where the genus is distributed from Mexico to southern Brazil. The study of herbarium specimens, especially from Brazil and other South American countries, including historical collections from many European herbaria, resulted in the recognition of numerous new geographical records. Morphological characters of diagnostic importance are discussed for the genus and species, for which aspects of the inflorescence, corolla, gynoecium and indument are important for identification. In Neotropical Staurogyne, the corolla may have two basic forms: 1) short, infundibular, and white (often with markings on the limb and throat), and 2) long, tubular, and yellow or red. Species with the latter form of the corolla are restricted to southeastern Brazil. Eight synonymizations and one lectotyfication are proposed, while a key to species, descriptions, illustrations and comments on taxonomy, phenology and geographical distribution are provided.
In Porto Ferreira State Park – PEPF some floristic studies were carried out, although none of them aimed exclusively to the vascular epiphytes. In this study, we carried out the floristic survey of vascular epiphytes in three vegetational types of the PFSP: Seasonal Semideciduous Alluvial Forest – FESA, Seasonal Semideciduous Forest – FES and “Cerradão” – CE, during one year. We compared the floristic similarities with five others studies in São Paulo state conducted in Seasonal Semideciduous Forest, Cerradão and riparian forest. We recorded 66 species, 32 genera and eight families. FESA was the richest vegetational type (46 species), followed by the FES (44) and CER (18). Orchidaceae was the richest family in FESA and FES, in the CER it was Bromeliaceae. The most abundant ecological category in both areas was the obligate holoepiphytes. The CER of PEPF was more similar with CER of Luís Antônio area, located in the same hydrographic basin, while the west CER formed another group; and the FESA and FES of PEPF grouped with the Botucatu forests. Although, presented an expected richness for those vegetational types, this study recorded an increase of 42 species of vascular epiphytes for the PFSP.

A taxonomic study of the Blechnum occidentale species group in southern and southeastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul) was carried out and eleven taxa were accepted (nine species, two hybrids). Four taxa are widely distributed in tropical America, three are widely distributed in South America, three are exclusive to southern South America, and one is restricted to Brazil. New records are presented for several taxa in states from southeastern Brazil, in other regions of the country, as well as in other countries. Taxonomic descriptions are presented for the whole genus and for all infrageneric taxa occurring in the study area as well as synonymies, lectotypifications, a new combination (Blechnum × leopoldense), a key for the identification of infrageneric taxa, comments and geographical distribution for each taxon.
(Bromeliaceae in the APA Santuário Ecológico da Pedra Branca, Caldas, Minas Gerais). The Environmental Protection Area Ecological Sanctuary of Pedra Branca is located in the municipality of Caldas, southern Minas Gerais state. In their 119 km2, the altitude is always above 1000m, reaching 1760m in the Pedra Branca. The region of Caldas raises interest since the mid-nineteenth century, when the naturalist Anders F. Regnell conducted extensive collections of local flora, listing several species of Bromeliaceae. Of 19 species of Bromeliaceae identified, Tillandsia (9 species), Aechmea (3) and Vriesea (3) were the best represented genera, while Billbergia, Bromelia, Dyckia and Wittrockia showed only one species. It is described for the first time the occurrence of T. pohliana, T. recurvata, T. streptocarpa and T. tricholepis in the study area, despite intensive Regnell expeditions. Two species are rediscovered at the type locality and six have exclusive habitat. The greater diversity of Bromeliaceae occurs along the Serra da Pedra Branca, is due to the integrity of the flora or a combination of altitude, climate and topography that favour the emergence of a mosaic of vegetation types. Key words: Bromeliaceae, Caldas, A. F. Regnell, Serra da Pedra Branca.
