PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to assess student web searching competency. The paper aims to determine varying levels of university student competency in web searches and to investigate and compare their competency levels of searching academic and daily‐life tasks.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted a quantitative research method of giving study participants a controllable experiment, a task‐based online test (TBOT), to evaluate web searching competency based on student searching performance. Participants included 141 undergraduate and graduate students from Wuhan University, China. Their searching competency level was assessed by testing their searching effectiveness and searching efficiency.FindingsStudent average web searching competency level was found to be comparatively low overall, within preliminary stages of development. A lot of students are unable to search the web with efficiency. Competency levels for searching academic tasks were higher than those of daily‐life tasks, especially when the degree of difficulty increased. These two levels, however, have a significant positive correlationship. In information literacy education it is therefore vital to teach students comprehensive web searching competency that includes knowledge and techniques for both academic and daily‐life search tasks.Originality/valueUsing the TBOT to assess student web searching competency is novel in the field of library and information science. By conducting this pilot experiment, librarians and teachers will be able to design and promote an improved information literacy education according to students' specific web searching competency status, instead of assumed goal levels.
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to evaluate freely available machine translation (MT) services' performance in translating metadata records.Design/methodology/approachRandomly selected metadata records were translated from English into Chinese using Google, Bing, and SYSTRAN MT systems. These translations were then evaluated using a five point scale for both fluency and adequacy. Missing count (words not translated) and incorrect count (words incorrectly translated) were also recorded.FindingsConcerning both fluency and adequacy, Google and Bing's translations of more than 70 percent of test data received scores equal to or greater than three, representative of “non‐native Chinese” and “much coverage,” respectively. SYSTRAN scored lowest in both measures. However, these differences were not statistically significant. A Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated a strong relationship (r=0.86) between fluency and adequacy. Missing count and incorrect count strongly correlated with fluency and adequacy.Originality/valueMost existing digital collections can be accessed in English alone. Few digital collections in the USA support multilingual information access (MLIA) that enables users of differing languages to search, browse, recognize and use information in the collections. Human translation is one solution, but it is neither time nor cost effective for most libraries. This study serves as a first step to understand the performance of current MT systems and to design effective and efficient MLIA services for digital collections.
Through an empirical study based on university students,this paper investigates the factors affecting web searching behavior from the perspectives of six elements,including user social organization background,user emotion,search task,information object and search tool.Logistic regression is used in this study,and its result will help us to understand the characteristics of users' web searching behavior and provide effective instructions for information literacy education and information resource management and utilization work.

The study finds that cognition, information communication, IT skill, member relationship, instructor guidance and supervision have a significant impact on collaborative e-learning. The paper constructs an assessment system of student Web information search ability by scenario-based test,including assessment measures,assessment standards and assessment tool.By employing this assessment system to test university students,it reveals the levels and related features of Chinese university students' Web information searching ability,and investigates the effects of this test.This paper points out that this assessment system is able to quantitatively measure student Web information searching ability in a better way,and plays an important role in promoting Chinese information literacy education development.
[Abstract] In this paper, performance of online translation systems including Google, Systran and Bing on translating metadata records derived from the digital libraryPortal to Texas Historyis manually evaluated using four measures: Fluency, Adequacy, Incorrect Translation, and Missing Translation. 本文首先回顾了国内外已有的信息素养评价指标体系的研究成果,从评价标准和指标构建方法入手,提出采用定性和定量相结合的方式是目前构建高校学生信息素养评价指标体系的最佳方法,并指出权重制定方式没有考虑到作为教育受众的学生自身需求是当前国内研究的主要不足之处.笔者运用层次分析法,分别从专家和学生的角度量化指标体系,通过进行对比试验来研究专家和学生、不同学生群体在指标权重上的异同点和内部规律,并为未来我国的信息素养培养目标与内容提出了一些新的思路.
