For the construction of wind towers with large hub heights up to 200m, the FOSTA research project P1392 HYTOWER [1] investigated a concept for a self‐erecting wind energy plant with steel‐steel hybrid tower. A tubular steel tower is lifted inside a lattice tower using a strand lifting system. During this process the tubular steel tower is stabilized by hydraulic cylinders. A specially developed transition piece is used to accommodate the lifting system during the lifting process and to finally connect the two tower parts. In this paper, the erection process as well as the development of the transition piece is presented.
To achieve a higher performance level and lower erection costs for wind turbines in the future, a concept for the automatic erection of a wind turbine with a hybrid tower was investigated in the FOSTA research project P1392. The tubular steel tower is lifted through the lattice tower using a strand lifting system and stabilized during this lifting process with the help of hydraulic cylinders arranged in two levels in the transition piece. This stabilization results in a transverse pressure acting on the tower shell, which does not occur in the load cases during operation, but only in the construction state. In this paper, the transverse forces (patch load) acting on the tower are investigated, whereby different system states are considered.

Within the FOSTA research project P1392 "Self-erecting onshore wind energy plants with hub heights greater than 120 m hybrid tower with lifting device for self-erection", a self-erecting wind energy plant with steel hybrid tower for low-wind sites was developed, which does not require the use of special crawler cranes. The tower of the example plant consists of an 80 m high lattice tower with a special transition piece, through which the 100 m high tubular steel tower including nacelle and rotor is lifted into its final position with the help of a strand lifting system. To stabilise the tubular steel tower during the lift, a specially developed stabilisation system is used, which takes up the tower bending moment via revolving, guided cylinders, which are arranged in two levels in the transition piece and keep the tubular tower in the vertical position. The design and dimensioning of the tubular steel tower, the lattice tower and the transition piece were carried out for the final state. For the optimisation of the lattice tower, a specially developed software was used, which designs a weight-optimised lattice tower structure on the basis of probabilistic methods. For the tubular steel tower, it was shown that the transverse loads acting from the hydraulic cylinders can be carried. On the basis of the investigated example plant, it could be shown that construction and operation of the self-erecting wind energy plant are economically possible.
