BACKGROUND:Nutrition literacy is a key determinant of healthy dietary behaviors; however, brief and psychometrically robust instruments for assessing nutrition literacy in Turkish populations remain limited. This study aimed to adapt the Nutrition Literacy Scale-Short Form (NL-SF12) into Turkish and to evaluate its validity and reliability across different population groups. METHODS:This methodological, cross-sectional study included three independent samples from Türkiye: health-related university students (n = 470), non-health-related university students (n = 464), and adults from the general population (n = 546), totaling 1480 participants. Nutrition literacy was assessed using the NL-SF12. Criterion-related validity was examined using the e-Healthy Diet Literacy Scale (e-HDL). Construct validity was evaluated through confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was assessed using internal consistency coefficients and test-retest correlations. RESULTS:Confirmatory factor analysis supported the original six-factor structure of the NL-SF12 across all population groups (factor loadings: 0.55-0.97), demonstrating acceptable model fit. Internal consistency was high across samples (Cronbach's α = 0.94; McDonald's ω = 0.94-0.95). Test-retest reliability indicated strong temporal stability (r = 0.82-0.92; p < 0.001). NL-SF12 scores showed moderate correlations with e-HDL scores across groups (r = 0.65; p < 0.001), supporting criterion-related validity. CONCLUSIONS:The Turkish version of the NL-SF12 is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing nutrition literacy across diverse population groups and represents a feasible tool for use in public health nutrition research and practice.

OBJECTIVES:This study aimed to develop and validate a measurement tool that provides a model-based assessment of health beliefs affecting individuals' safe pesticide use behaviors. METHODS:This study employed a methodological design. The study sample consisted of 701 agricultural workers engaged in pesticide-related work in a district in southern Türkiye. Data were collected using a sociodemographic form and the 42-item draft version of the Health Belief Model Scale for Safe Pesticide Use Behaviors (HeBSaPUB). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to determine construct validity. Cronbach's alpha internal consistency and test-retest correlation coefficients were calculated for reliability. RESULTS:The 39-item HeBSaPUB scale showed good psychometric properties in terms of reliability, content validity, and construct validity. In the EFA, a six-factor structure emerged, explaining 61.36% of the total variance in the measured variables: perceived susceptibility, perceived barriers, perceived severity, perceived benefits, cues to action, and self-efficacy. This structure was confirmed by CFA using a cross-validation approach. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.90 for the whole scale and ranged from 0.81 to 0.92 for the sub-dimensions. The test-retest reliability coefficient values of the scale were between 0.763 and 0.927. The items on the scale were not additive, and each sub-dimension was evaluated independently. An increase in the scores of perceived susceptibility, perceived benefit, perceived severity, cues to action, and self-efficacy, along with a decrease in the scores of perceived barriers, indicated positive health beliefs. CONCLUSION:The results of the study demonstrated that the HeBSaPUB scale is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring attitudes and beliefs toward safe behaviors in preventing the risk of pesticide exposure. The HeBSaPUB scale can contribute to identifying needs for health professionals.
ABSTRACTBackgroundWork environments that support patient safety initiatives are important for quality service and patient outcomes. The relationship between the leadership behaviours of nurse managers and safety culture, which has the potential to support these initiatives, constitutes one of the most important knowledge gaps.ObjectivesThe study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses' perceived leadership behaviours and hospital safety culture and the factors affecting them.DesignWe tested the theoretical model using structural equation modelling with the AMOS 21 program.MethodsThe research was conducted with 134 nurses in two public hospitals in the south of Türkiye. Data were collected between October and December 2021 using the Leadership Behaviour Questionnaire and the Patient Safety Culture Hospital Questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis used to evaluate the data of the study. Structural equation modelling analysis and confirmatory factor analysis performed to test the research hypotheses.ResultsThe study found that non‐punitive attitudes towards the mistakes had a full mediating effect on overall perception of safety interaction with employee‐oriented leadership and high‐level hospital interventions (β = −0.510, 95% CI −1.006/−0.076), and change had partly mediating effect on overall perception of safety interaction with change‐oriented leadership (β = −0.510, 95% CI −1.043/−0.053).ConclusionsIt is clear that if nurse managers are to improve the staff's patient safety culture, they should develop change‐oriented leadership skills by identifying adverse events and risks and motivating staff to learn from errors without taking punitive measures. In this context, healthcare organizations should evaluate the leadership qualities of managers. Managers at all levels can make plans to develop leadership behaviours that will play a facilitating role in improving patient safety.
Objective: This study was conducted to develop a Sexual Quality of Life Scale Specific for Patients with a Stoma. Methods: The study used a methodological design and involved 179 people with an intestinal stoma. Results: Following exploratory factor analysis, the scale found that the scale to consist of four subdimensions (worries about spouse/partner, body image distortion, sexual dysfunction, and negative emotions) and 24 items explaining these dimensions. All factors together were found to explain 84.923% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis model showed a good fit, with factor loadings ranging from 0.584 to 0.975. The subdimensions had high Cronbach's alpha values between 0.910 and 0.981, indicating high internal consistency. Conclusion: As a result of the overall psychometric evaluation of the Stoma Sexual Quality of Life Scale, it was found to be a valid and reliable tool for assessing sexual quality of life in individuals with an intestinal stoma.
Objective: While one of the groups most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is elderly individuals, those living alone are more disadvantaged. This study aimed to explore the experiences of elderly individuals living alone during the COVID-19 pandemic and to address this process and the problems they experience with all aspects of health. Methods: This study adopted a phenomenological approach and was conducted with 14 elderly people living alone. Individual in-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview form. Content analysis was used for the data analysis. Results: The main themes identified were i) the effects of pandemic restrictions, ii) the view of the elderly on pandemic rules, iii) physical, iv) mental and v) social health problems, vi) coping strategies of the elderly, vii) support received in problem-solving, viii) and solution suggestions from the elderly. Conclusion: Pandemic restrictions in elderly individuals living alone have disrupted health checks and changes in daily life. The elderly experienced physical, mental and social health problems during the pandemic and developed coping strategies to combat the process. The experiences of the elderly and their suggestions should be taken into account in being prepared for any crisis that may affect the whole society, especially the elderly living alone.
ABSTRACTAimsThe aim of this study is to explore patterns of the lived experiences of first‐generation Turkish immigrants (≥ 60 years) living and ageing in Norway regarding their experiences with healthcare services and ageing.DesignThis study used a qualitative study.MethodsThe sample consisted of 17 individuals aged 60 and above who were of Turkish origin, and immigrated to and living in Norway. All participants resided in the same city in the middle part of Norway. Individual face‐to‐face interviews were conducted between February and June 2023. The first theme was ‘Utilization of the healthcare service to their best’, with the subthemes: (a) ‘Communication through a translator: Expressing health problems’ and (b) ‘From physician to physician: Seeking a second opinion in health’. The second theme was ‘Being born in Türkiye: Aging in Norway’, with the subthemes: (a) ‘Between two worlds: Efforts to establish balance’, (b) ‘Family ties and care preferences: Understanding the care preferences’ and (c) ‘Two cultures, one life: Lifestyles’.ConclusionThis study reveals the experiences Turkish immigrants have with the healthcare service and ageing while living in Norway and balancing between two cultures. These findings offer a valuable perspective for healthcare providers and social workers and offer insight relevant to developing a cross‐cultural healthcare service programme.ImpactThis study could provide a fundamental step towards understanding older Turkish immigrants and how healthcare services fit their needs. The results revealed Turkish individuals' experiences with ageing and healthcare services, including the use of translator services and general care preferences. The development of more inclusive support programmes for ageing immigrant populations may have far‐reaching impacts on individuals' ability to live healthy and meaningful lives.
ABSTRACT e‐Pulse is an electronic personal health record system known as e‐Nabız in Turkey. This study compares the effect of European Health Literacy‐based e‐Pulse education and e‐Pulse instructional materials on the health literacy levels of adults aged 45–64 with inadequate and problematic‐limited health literacy levels. This single‐blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted from June 2023 to September 2023. It included 140 participants, assigned to either the intervention group ( n = 70) or the active control group ( n = 70). The intervention group received HLS‐EU‐based e‐Pulse education, which consisted of two 45‐min sessions over 6 weeks, along with the e‐Pulse user guide and introduction video. The active control group only received the e‐Pulse user guide and introduction video, and each participant was individually briefed on the e‐Pulse system content for 5–10 min. Results were measured using the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS‐EU‐Q47) and the eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS) at baseline and the sixth week. Both the intervention and active control groups showed an increase in health literacy and eHealth literacy scores, but the mean change was greater in the intervention group. A statistically significant difference was found in the effects of HLS‐EU‐based e‐Pulse education and e‐Pulse instructional materials on both health literacy (F (1, 137) = 25.215; p < 0.001) and eHealth literacy (F (1, 137) = 36.134; p < 0.001). HLS‐EU‐based e‐Pulse education significantly improved health literacy ( d = 0.8492; p < 0.001) and eHealth literacy ( d = 1.0175; p < 0.001) compared to e‐Pulse instructional materials. The intervention group demonstrated significantly higher rates of sufficient (32.9%) and excellent (12.9%) health literacy. Notably, a medium correlation ( r = 0.602; p < 0.001) was observed between health literacy and eHealth literacy. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT05831254) https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05831254 .
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine howthe Precede-Proceed Model-based programme "I Quit Smoking, Protecting My Future and Health" affects the smoking behaviour of nursing students. Methods: This study was designed as a single-centre quasi-experimental non-randomised trial with pretest-posttest and follow-up. The sample consisted of a total of 80 nursing students including 40 in the intervention group and 40 in the control group. The ethics committee approval, institutional permission, and the students' informed consent were obtained. Results: The interventions within the scope of the I Quit Smoking, Protecting My Future and Health programme increased the students' behaviour changes towards smoking cessation and self-efficacy, reduced their scores on the pros subscale of decision-making scale and number of cigarettes smoked, and lowered level of temptation and nicotine dependence level in the intervention group compared to the control group. 12 students from the intervention group quitted smoking. Conclusion: I Quit Smoking, Protecting My Future and Health programme had a positive effect on the smoking behaviour of nursing students.
OBJECTIVES:Workplaces are suitable areas for smoking cessation programs and incentives. This study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of interventions in the workplace for smoking cessation in working individuals. METHODS:All studies published in English between 2013 and 2022 were searched in Pub Med, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases. Meta-analysis was based on PRISMA 2020. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO. A random effects model was applied to the meta-analysis processes, and Hedges' g was used to calculate the effect size. RESULTS:Of the included studies, 11 were randomized controlled trials, and 8 were cluster randomized controlled trials. In different working sectors, various interventions such as motivational/individual interviews, group counseling, telephone coaching, web-based training, mindfulness meditation, and financial interventions were implemented. These interventions were carried out alone or in combination with one or more other interventions. The interventions generally have short-term effects, and financial incentives or supports were the factors that positively motivate the interventions. The joint effect size of attempts to quit smoking in the workplace (Hedges' g) was 1.171. Heterogeneity between studies was significant (Q = 199.762, p = 0.015, I2 = 80.477%). No publication bias was detected. CONCLUSIONS:We determined that smoking cessation interventions applied in the workplace have a large effect. We recommend that the long-term effects of increasing effectiveness of these interventions be considered and planned in line with the needs of working groups.
Purpose A healthy family is very important for community health. This study was conducted to test the validity and reliability of the short and long forms of the Family Health Scale (FHS) in Turkish culture. Design and methods This is a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of instruments using a methodological approach. A total of 783 individuals aged between 18 and 65 from Turkey. The test-retest reliability analysis of FHS was performed with 64 participants after four weeks. Results Confirmed that the long form of the FHS was four-dimensional and the short form was one-dimensional. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the long and short forms fit well with the data, and it was determined that all fit indices were within acceptable limits. The Cronbach alpha of the long form of the FHS was 0.911, the cronbach alphas of the four sub-dimensions ranged from 0.833 to 0.908, and short form was 0.872. The pearson correlation coefficient between the forms was 0.919 (p = 0.000). Conclusions The results of the study revealed that the FHS is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used specifically for Turkish society. Practice implications Nurses can use both forms of the FHS to examine family health and trends in family health in the population they serve. The FHS may be an important screening tool in health care settings and family intervention programs. Nurses can use FHS when providing health care so that children grow up in a healthy family.
The bibliometric analysis method was used to evaluate the articles both qualitatively and quantitatively and to visualize the data. "Web of Science Core Collection" database and the VOSviewer program were used to obtain and analyze the data. Distribution of studies by year, author country institution analysis, journal and author citation analysis, journal and author co-citation analysis, and keyword analysis was carried out. Two hundred authors representing 45 countries and 200 institutions contributed to a total of 285 studies on smoking cessation published in 84 journals between 2003 and 2023. While Journal of Addictions Nursing was determined as the journal in which the largest number of articles were published, Research in Nursing and Health was determined as the most cited journal. The top three countries that provide the most support for published articles are the United States, Australia, and Canada. The five most frequently used keywords in the published studies were "smoking cessation," "smoking," "pregnancy," "nurses/nursing," and "tobacco." The results of this bibliometric analysis showed that the researchers have had an increasing interest in smoking cessation in the nursing field over the past 20 years. It is recommended to focus on less-studied topics in studies to be planned on smoking in the field of nursing.

Background: Determining the smoking frequency of young people and their exposure to cigarette pack warnings is important in terms of developing new policies for smoking cessation. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the smoking frequency of nursing students, their nicotine dependence, the extent to which they were affected by textual/graphic warning labels on cigarette packs, and the factors affecting them. Methods: The research is cross-sectional type. According to the sample calculation formula in cases where the universe is known, the universe was accepted as 855, the sample was calculated with 95% confidence interval and 0.05 error, and the number of people to be sampled was found to be 195. A total of 240 people were selected for the study, considering that there may be data losses. The students to be sampled were determined by the stratified sampling method. The data were collected via the survey created by the researchers and the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Chi-squared test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The average age of the students was 20.95 ± 1.70. 22.5% of the participants smoked. 68.5% of students had a low addiction level, while 57.1% were affected by warnings on a cigarette packs. It was observed that the effect of textual warnings on the cigarette packs did not differ by gender. Graphics showing a person in intensive care and a dead person's foot in the morgue evoked higher levels of negative affect on women than on men. When the written warnings on the cigarette package and some variables are compared; It was found that there was a statistically significant difference between smoking status, presence of smokers in the family, level of smoking addiction and smoking status. No statistically significant difference was found when being affected by written warnings and gender were compared. Conclusion: In order to prevent early youth smoking initiation, preventive studies should be carried out on young people from childhood. Particularly male students should be observed more carefully. Nurses; should develop strategies that can be effective in smoking-related youth and conduct qualitative research on them.
